Anwar did not get permission to enter Japan, says embassy
PETALING JAYA (Jan 21, 2014): Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim (pix) was not allowed to enter Japan as he did not apply for a special visa with the embassy.
An officer from the embassy told theSun today that previously in April 2011 and June 2012, Anwar was allowed to visit Japan but on both occasions, he was granted permission as he had applied for a visa.
"We received visa applications from Datuk Seri Anwar and we made special arrangements in accordance to our Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act so that he can enter Japan, considering various factors including diplomatic considerations.
"This time, we could not consider a special arrangement because we did not receive a prior application," said the officer.
Japan lifted the visa requirement for Malaysians visiting the country since last year.
Under Japan's Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act, the Japanese government has the right to deny entry to any person who has previously been convicted or imprisoned for one year or more for any crime in Japan or in any other country.
The officer explained that Anwar was notified by an immigration officer when he landed at Narita International Airport on Sunday morning.
"Datuk Seri Anwar did not file an appeal to get the special permission to enter Japan, and so he was asked to return to Malaysia," the officer added.
It was reported that Japanese authorities told Anwar that he had been denied entry because of his previous conviction for sodomy in 1999.
Anwar said he had flown to Japan after receiving a personal invite from the chairman of the Nippon Foundation, Tan Sri Yohei Sasakawa. He had been scheduled to present a paper on Muslim democrats.
It was also reported that prior to departing Malaysia, Anwar's office had enquired with the Japanese embassy in Kuala Lumpur and had been informed there were no issues preventing him from visiting the country.
Anwar, in a statement said he wants an explanation from Wisma Putra. On Monday, Foreign Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Anifah Aman denied any interference and said the Japanese government has the right to deny entry to anyone whom they find "undesirable."
Meanwhile DAP stalwart Lim Kit Siang in a statement said the Japanese government should apologise to Anwar and Malaysians for the "national insult" in denying entry to Anwar.
"The barring of Anwar from entering Japan is not a mere personal matter involving Anwar but a question of national honour as Anwar is the leader the Pakatan Rakyat coalition which secured the majority support of 51% of voters in the 13th General Elections on May 5 last year.
"Malaysians do not want to interfere in the internal affairs and politics of Japan and similarly the Japanese government must act correctly and not interfere in the internal politics of Malaysia," he said, adding that the excuse that Anwar was prevented from entering Japan because of his previous conviction in 1999 was ridiculous.

Pasai dia pernah jail kut?
I pun tak faham. Katanya passport baru tak perlu. Passport I lama, kena visa ke? That is not clear. Ingat hari tu nak pegi Japan dengan sedara, dia kata passport dia baru, yang ada shiny sikit tu hihihihi (tak faham). passport I tak dak tu, so kena visa ke?

Embassy spokesperson Tomoko Nagai said that any persons who have had a prior conviction in Japan or any other country and have had been jailed for a year or more would be denied entry to the country.

Ai rasa dgn pasport baru tu je tak perlu visa..pasport lama perlu...
I rasa gitu jugak. Maknanya kena tunggu passport expired, buat baru, pas tu boleh pegi Japan. Buat visa ni annoying la hehe.
