'A youth growth melo (drama) of a man that lives by false name and a woman who couldn’t lie'
PLOT, SYNOPSIS - 1
A young man lost his family because of what one reporter thought was ‘the truth’ and grew up hating reporters. A woman with ‘Pinocchio Syndrome’, who would begin to hiccup if she ever tried to lie. These two people have now become trainee reporters at the social issues division of a TV station, and come to know the truth about human nature while searching for the answer to ‘What is real truth?’
A new project from the writer-director team of ‘I Hear Your Voice’! A youthful genre drama with personal growth and mystery!
PLOT, SYNOPSIS - 2
Whenever Pinocchio tells a lie, his nose will grow. Eventually he learned his lesson, refused to tell any more lies and became good. It is so that even a puppet could become a real boy and earn his happily ever after… This is the beautiful moral of ‘Pinocchio’, a child’s tale which is well known to everyone.
However, let’s branch out our thinking a little. Is there any person who could live without lying? No, even beyond that, is lying always something bad? Is the truth always righteous and beautiful? Are there not cases where people get irrevocably hurt by truths that they could have done without knowing, and end up becoming twisted by that knowledge?
The people in this story are searching for answers to these questions.
"Is there anyone who will immediately get found out when they lie? Then what if such a person became a reporter?"
Last year, in the drama ‘I Hear Your Voice’, writer Park Hye Ryun and PD Jo Soo Won brought us a moving drama about a boy who could read other people’s hearts. This time they will return with a story which focuses on a woman who has ‘Pinocchio Syndrome’ but became a reporter, and a man who became a reporter because he no longer believes in the truth.
A young man had lost his father, due to a reporter who acted on what he believed to be ‘the truth’ and displayed it to the world. Thus, he, Choi Dal-po, had to take another identity, Ki Ha-myeong, in order to hide from the publicity and the world. A girl cannot stop hiccupping whenever she tells a lie, so she decides to use it as her weapon and becomes a reporter who can only tell the truth, since ‘truth means life’ to her.
However, these two people who are the same age is actually uncle and niece. While their families know about this strange relationship, they kept it quiet because of the influence of one mysterious person. In any case, the man and the woman became intern reporters at two different broadcast stations, with completely different aspirations and values in their heart. Moreover, the two stations are actually rivals with one another, with a history of bad blood between them, especially the social issues departments…
A man who hates the ‘truth’ of reporters and a woman who sees ‘truth’ as important as her life. They inevitably butt heads with one another, but who knows if what they discover would be the truth? Or just another bunch of lies?
Writer Park Hye Ryun has a deft hand in building intricate stories and creating realistic characters; PD Jo Soo Won is known for his dedicated direction style and ability to wrangle multiple genres. The fact that the two are joining hands again is certainly good news for audiences. Airing in the second half of 2014, surely ‘Pinocchio’ will become another SBS drama that incites heated discussion.

CAST
(1) HANGANG-LINE TRAINEE
Lee Jong Suk as Choi Dal Po (Real name is Ki Ha Myeong)
Character description:
Even though he is tall and possesses handsome looks, no one realizes it since it is hidden under a head of scruffy hair and dingy clothes. Although he can’t be called a flower boy (ggeot-minam, 꽃미남), he may well called a soon-to-be handsome man (got-minam, 곧미남) — just needs to be tidied up.
He was born under the name Ki Hamyoung.
When he was 14, he nearly drowned and was saved by Inha’s grandpa, Gongpil. He was then adopted into the family and takes the name Dalpo, because Gong-pil believes that Hamyoung to be his deceased son who had drowned at sea. Through this, Dalpo’s new family now consists of — a father, Gongpil, who could pass as Dalpo’s grandfather in age; a younger brother, Dalpyung, who’s is his father’s age; and a same-age niece, Inha.
In order to pass as Dalpo (who had never been good at studies), this boy has taken to hiding his fantastic intellect. Although he can easily memorize the whole library, he intentionally gets zero in all his exams. This is how he gained the nickname of ‘All-Zero’. He further hid his good looks by wearing shabby clothes and a pair of gum boots, completing the look of a fashion terrorist.
He knows that the family is financial difficult, so Dalpo feigns disinterest in university studies and gives the opportunity to his niece Inha. He takes the job of a taxi driver. However, his intellect, amazing ability to memorize anything, plus the street smarts he gained from driving a taxi… these are all leading him to become a reporter possessing truly unique talents.
Park Shin Hye as Choi In Ha
Character description:
She suffers from Pinocchio Syndrome, where she begins hiccuping whenever she lies and can only stop when she tells the truth. Most people who have this syndrome shy from the public since they can’t lie, but Inha has rather chosen to live her life telling the truth exactly as it is.
She fights over every little thing with her same-age uncle, Dalpo. She remembers that when they first met, he was a gentle young man; but somehow he turned hostile towards her. She couldn’t help but dislike Dalpo, who always ranked bottom in school and was ostracized for it. It wasn’t until she discovered his hidden smarts and warmth that she accepted him into her family.
If you have Pinocchio Syndrome, there’s not many careers for you to choose from. Lawyers, congressmen, writers, actors… these are all jobs where lying is a basic requirement. Therefore, Inha has chosen to become a reporter! In her mind, a reporter cannot even include the slightest lie in her work, so it is the most suitable for her. Besides, being a reporter would give her a chance to find her mom who had left the family.
Nevertheless, the syndrome causes a load of troubles for Inha. She can’t toy with the guy she likes, let alone consider two guys at the same time. Work is no easier. She may not be 100% righteous but even when she tries to lie by omitting the truth, the hiccups come. All this gives Inha more motivation to search for truth than any other reporter out there.
Kim Young Kwang as Seo Bum Jo
Character description:
Born with enough money and property to last him more than a lifetime. He’s never lacked anything since childhood, so he has a bright personality. People can’t take their eyes off him, since his appearance and stature is like that of a professional model; he even has great fashion sense.
The monthly income from his assets is a dozen times the salary of an average salaryman, so he has never had to find a job or stick to a goal in life. He got a job as a fashion reporter since it seemed stylish, but it failed to hold his interest. His life was a yacht upon a windless lake — peaceful yet without happiness.
Yet, one day, his yacht began to move, because of a wind named Inha.
It began even before he had seen her face. By coincidence, Beomjo had claimed the old mobile phone number of Chaok, Inha’s mother. Since then, he’s been reading all the text messages that Inha sent to her departed mother (T/N: I’m reminded of Hyesung sending messages to her mom in IHYV). Through her words, he became interested in a person besides himself, for the first time in his life. He even longs to meet her in person, which instigates change in his life.
And thus, the wind now leads him into the vibrant life of a social issues reporter.
Lee Yoo Bi as Yoon Yoo Rae
Character description:
Used to be a sasaeng fan of an idol group. Even though her past as a sasaeng fan causes her to be looked down upon, her experience gives her a certain competitive edge as a reporter.
She is not above using a doctor’s stethoscope to eavesdrop on conversations; this determination allows her to successfully write reports on whatever topic she is assigned. Sometimes her ambition gets the better of her and she will make mistakes. She easily wavers between decisions and sympathizes with others too much. To summarize, she’s a busybody, always curious and never stops speaking.
She gets quick access to information through gossip rags and social media platforms.
(2) YGN News Station
Hwang Gyo Dong (Lee Pil Mo)
Character description:
He is known as the ‘City Cop Captain’ at YGN, meaning that he can go in and out of the police station whenever he wants. No one has ever seen him smile since he entered the company.
He’s not used to expressing his feelings to others. He speaks his mind towards his boss and is always strict to his juniors, therefore there is hardly a person who likes him in the company. However, holding tight the belief that ‘truth has the power to change the world’, he is a natural-born reporter.’
The eldest of six sons, he went to an all boy’s high school for all six years then graduated from a science and tech university. Having lived his life among men, he is severely lacking in knowledge about women and dating. Therefore, he is still ‘solo from birth’, even as he approaches the age of 40.
Jang Hyun-gyu (?)
Character description:
YGN’s ‘iljin reporter’. Famous for his impeccable strictness, everyone avoids him at all costs. Easily infuriated and moody; only backs down when the other side is even stronger than him.
Takes a dislike towards Gyodong, who he believes is too rigid. Likes to use methods to trip up people, and he is nicknamed “Jang Ddanji” (‘jang ddanji’ refers to the calf part of the leg, which wrestlers would use to trip up people in matches). However, he agrees with Gyodong on the meaning of ‘what is news’.
Lee Yongtak (?)
Character description:
The leader of YGN’s broadcast department, also an announcer.
Personality is calm and never goes into a flying rage. Always wearing an impenetrable smile on his face, but reveals his unparalleled decisive power in times of crisis. He understands that for a reporter, his words is his power. Therefore he always exercises this power with discretion.
As an announcer, his appearance is priority at all times. Always carries spray moisterizer, oil film and chapstick.
Jo Won-gu (?)
Character description:
The leader of YGN’s social issues department.
Likes sports and girl groups, his taste is on trends all the time. His belief is that although news have to be fair, it should also have impact; therefore he keeps an eye on audience ratings.
Caught between the broadcast department and City Cop Captain (who both value truth over ratings), he is worried about YGN’s future.
Im Chae Hwan (?)
Character description:
A photographer at YGN.
She is the rare female photographer, possessing an unparalleled physical and mental ability for grabbing shots, determined not to lose to any other reporters out there. Therefore, she has gained the reputation of being able to handle any situation and take responsibility for a good shot, no matter the situation.
Her cool image and hot personality has caused her male hoobaes to refer to her as ‘hyung’. She doesn’t ignore this, but treats it as a compliment. Whenever she hears the words ‘women should be…’, she gets agitated.
Byun Hee Bong as Choi Gong Pil (Choi In Ha's grandpa)
Kang Sin Il
Jin Kyung as Song Cha Ok
Shin Jung Keun as Choi Dal Pyeong (Choi In Ha's father)
Kim Kwang Kyu
Jung Il Ki as Ki Ho Sang (could be Ki Ha Myeong & Ki Jae Myeong's father(?) or uncle(?))
Yoon Gyun Sang as Ki Jae Myeong (Choi Dal Po's older brother)

Park Shin-hye confirmed to star in ‘Pinocchio’
Hallyu actress Park Shin-hye will play the heroine of SBS’ new television series “Pinocchio,” the broadcaster confirmed on Thursday.
Star label S.A.L.T. Entertainment said Park won the final confirmation from the broadcaster to play Choi In-ha, the heroine, of the romantic drama. The drama portrays the passionate pursuit of justice by young news reporters on the social affairs desk.
According to the scenario, Choi has a chronic symptom called “Pinocchio complex,” breaking into violent hiccups when she tells lies.
The star agency said the drama was intended to star Park from the beginning. The drama producer, iHQ, has been in constant call to have the actress take over the lead character in Pinocchio, the star agency added.
The Wednesday-Thursday drama will air the first episode on November, following the conclusion of the upcoming rom-com “My Lovely Girl” starring singer-actors Rain and Krystal of f(x).

News about Jongsuk is considering to star in the drama while Shinhye is already confirmed.
Lee Jong Suk and Park Shin Hye Considering New Drama “Pinocchio”
Actors Lee Jong Suk and Park Shin Hye are considering casting offers for SBS‘s upcoming Wednesday-Thursday drama titled “Pinocchio.”
Both of Lee Jong Suk’s and Park Shin Hye’s agencies, Wellmade and S.A.L.T. Entertainment, respectively, stated that their stars are reviewing the offer.
“Pinocchio” will follow the story of local TV news reporters. If Lee Jong Suk agrees, he will once again be working with scriptwriter and director pair- Park Hye Ryun and PD Jo Soo Won- who worked together on the hit drama “I Hear Your Voice” with Lee Jong Suk.
Earlier in the month, it was reported by the local media that actor Kim Woo Bin, a close friend of Lee Jong Suk, was offered a role in “Pinocchio,” with a correction later by SBS stating that Kim Woo Bin was not being courted because of his schedule.
“Pinocchio” is scheduled to begin airing in November, following the completion of both “It’s Okay, It’s Love,” as well as “My Lovely Girl.”

Actors Kim Young Kwang and Lee Yoo Bi in Talks for New Drama “Pinocchio”

On September 2, a representative of Kim Young Kwang’s agency, CHOII Entertainment, revealed to MBN Star, “’Although he received an offer for ‘Pinocchio,’ nothing is confirmed. It is still under consideration as it hasn’t been very long since tvN’s ‘Plus Nine Boys’ began.”

It has been reported that Kim Young Kwang was offered the role of a chaebol character who dreams of becoming a broadcast journalist, while Lee Yoo Bi received an offer to play the role of a former sasaeng fan-turned-journalist.

More on < Pinocchio>. Sedikit sebanyak ttg 4 main leads' character description.
Newsroom drama Pinocchio secures rookie reporter cast
We’ve finally got a lineup for upcoming SBS newsroom drama Pinocchio, and there aren’t any big surprises or shakeups. Park Shin-hye (Heirs) was first to confirm the offer, and now Lee Jong-seok (Doctor Stranger), Lee Yubi (Gu Family Book), and Kim Young-kwang (Plus Nine Boys) have officially signed on. Of course I’M terribly excited that Lee Jong-seok will be reuniting with I Hear Your Voice’s writer-director team, because I miss the warm fuzzies that that drama made me feel. Where are you, warm fuzzies of dramaland? Won’t you return to me?
The drama stars a foursome of bright-eyed, bushy-tailed rookie broadcast reporters at the city news desk, and will be a coming-of-age story about launching themselves into their first real-world social battleground in their twenties. They’ll basically spend every waking moment together because they have to work around the clock, and naturally, hijinks and romance will come to pass.
Choi In Ha:
Park Shin-hye plays the heroine who suffers from a form of Pinocchio syndrome, which makes her hiccup whenever she tells a lie. For some odd reason she chooses to be a news reporter because of this, likely because she’s idealistic enough to think she won’t ever have to lie on the job.
Choi Dal Po:
Lee Jong-seok plays a young reporter who’s been working at the news desk for a year. He’s tall and good-looking (well duh), but his shabby appearance — rundown clothes, bowl-cut hair (ack!) — hides all his good features and nobody gives him a second glance. But he’s eloquent and has an especially sharp memory, and just needs the right grooming and cultivating to put his best foot forward.
Seo Beom Jo:
Kim Young-kwang plays a chaebol heir with a sunny disposition, who’s never once had to live like a commoner while growing up. He spent a year working at a fashion magazine and quit, and tries his hand at broadcast news instead. Unlike the hero, he’ll be the kind of well-dressed, confident, handsome man to turn heads everywhere he goes.
Cha Hye Seung:
Lee Yubi plays an ex-sasaeng-fan (in her high school and college days) who turns her idol fangirl know-how into useful skills as a reporter. She’s described as timid but extremely dogged, which sounds contradictory and yet perfect to describe a rabid fan.
The cast also includes Lee Pil-mo (Emergency Couple), Byun Hee-bong (Flower Grandpa Investigation Unit), Kang Shin-il (God’s Gift–14 Days), and I Hear Your Voice’s hilarious judge Kim Kwang-kyu, and Gap-dong’s Jung In-ki who are both reuniting with the PD.
Pinocchio follows She’s So Lovable on Wednesdays and Thursdays in November. Whoo!

Staff Accounts about Jongsuk
Credit: xina5959 Weibo
The staff said that the 2 leads of Pinocchio already had a meeting a few days ago. Jongsuk was very casual, wearing just a T-shirt and jeans. Their height and jeans were very compatible. She/he said Jongsuk has always been very good at everything he did, and that Shinhye had a cheerful personality and was really friendly to the staff. The staff all “melted” after meeting these two because the atmosphere was really good.
The staff also said, during the meeting, Jongsuk and Shinhye both got really high discussing the drama, and Shinhye laughed and hit him. Very coincidentally, Jongsuk has a habit of hitting people next to him when he is excited. The two are very close, they were originally already good friends, and their personalities were really good, so they are looking forward to the two of them working together.
The staff also talked about Jongsuk’s small little actions. Previously when they were filming, time was really tight and everyone was tired. There were a few times when the staff accidentally fell asleep and delayed the progress of the shoot. When the director was really angry and was about to scold the staff, Jongsuk would say “It’s just nice that I can use this time to go to the washroom, just nice.” The director would then be unable to continue scolding, and everyone thought that Jongsuk was really smart and compassionate.
