To gain independence from the British and to battle the threat of pro-Chinese communists in Singapore, Lee recognized the importance and believed that a merger with Malaysia was essential for Singapore’s survival. On his 40th birthday, Lee readily agreed to Malayan Prime Minster Tunku Abdul Rahman's merger proposal and on 16 September 1963 joined the Federation of Malaya alongside North Borneo and Sarawak to form Malaysia.

The union however was short-lived. Race riots broke out in Singapore in 1964 and both Tunku Abdul Rahman and Lee were unable to see eye-to-eye in seeking answers to the conflict. Lee was for a “Malaysian Malaysia”, where the Chinese and Malays were accorded equal rights which the Malay-dominated federal government could not accept. In the end, the Tunku decided to expel Singapore from the Federation, leading to the independence of the tiny city-state on 9 August 1965.

It was a heavy blow to Lee who truly believed in a merger with Malaysia for Singapore’s survival: “(It) is a moment of anguish because all my life…I have believed in merger and the unity of these two territories.”

PS: they have different ideology & principle. I think that was ONE of the reasons. And also LKY was going too strong....ada kata he nak jadi Prime Minister malaysia...cam Bg Nuar

ko jgn tak tau...

pak nyer PM skrg org kuat komunis suatu ketika dulu...

dan dikabarkan semasa zaman komunis, lebih ramai melayu dari cina..sehingga ada parti melayu komunis...

cuma tak pernah dimention dalam buku sejarah...even gambar pak nyer PM pun takde..

kalo baca kat sumber perpustakaan luar negara, masih ada..

p/s dulu penah sapa tempek gambar paknyer PM bergambar dgn kempetai2 seazaman masa tu

Haha..kan..aku tak tgk coz aku tkdak astro..but for me kalo tgk coz i can learn something la...sekali tgk funeral raja2...skali ulamak...skali non muslim politician...

singapore kena berterima kasih kat UMNO...rasanya kemerdekaan spore antara yg paling mudah dalam dunia..susah lg hong kong nak merdeka dr brits

Menurut Dr Mahathir . Singapura dikeluarkan dari Malaysia dalam mesyuarat yang dipengerusikan oleh Almarhum Tunku tak sampai pun 15 minit..masa tu Dr Mahathir begitu excited nak tanya soalan .alih alih Tunku tamatkan mesyuarat , lepas tu Tunku ajak semua pi makan."kita makan naa" kata Tunku.
