Harga minyak terkawal tunggu reaksi selepas serangan Arab Saudi
KONGSI ARTIKEL

- Reuters

Supermarkets and hypermarkets in Malaysia going through consolidation
RETAIL
Tuesday, 17 Sep 2019

PETALING JAYA: Supermarket and hypermarket operators in Malaysia are going through a consolidation stage, Retail Group Malaysia managing director Tan Hai Hsin said.

“They expanded aggressively throughout the country during the 2000s. With the current economic condition that has not improved until now, it is not a surprise for them to close under-performing stores, ” he said.

“The closure is not expected to be worsened than this year, unless a recession occurred next year, ” Tan said.

On whether Malaysian consumers are turning to mini-markets instead of seeking bargains at hyper- and supermarkets, Tan said.

Malaysian consumers are not replacing hypermarket with mini-markets like KK Mart and 99 Speedmarts.

“Based on our observation, they are shopping lesser in hypermarket and buying more often in mini-market, ” he said.

Tan said the hypermarket format with 80,000 square feet and more was introduced to Malaysians with the arrival of Carrefour in 1994.

This format became very popular among Malaysian families because it was able to offer wide variety of goods under one roof.

They enjoyed hours of shopping at leisure pace in this super-large grocery store. It was a family outing, said Tan.

“In recent years, however, we believe Malaysian families are tired of spending hours in hypermarkets for basic necessities.

“They are still visiting hypermarkets for large quantity of purchases, but they are not going as often as 10 years ago.”

For purchases in small quantities, they are shifting to supermarkets and mini-markets.

“In addition, these small-format grocery stores are now able to offer very competitive prices as compared to hypermarkets. This trend has resulted in major hypermarket operators to open new grocery stores in smaller sizes, ” said Tan.

In the September 2019 Malaysia Retail Industry Report, Tan said supermarket and hypermarket sub-sector, which reported negative growth with closures of some stores, was the worst performer for the quarter under review.

This is the sub-sector’s eighth consecutive quarter of negative growth, the report said.

Two sub-sectors - pharmacy/personal care, and speciality stores - saw the strongest growth.

The department store sub-sector contracted 0.7%. This sub-sector has been facing slow growth for more than a year, the report said.

The department store sub-sector which comes with a supermarket, saw sustainable growth.

The fashion and accessories sub-sector saw a slowdown to 0.4% compared with the first quarter.

Canteen operators left in the lurch when schools ordered closed
NATION
Thursday, 19 Sep 2019

Early dismissal: SMK Convent Light Street students with their face masks walking out from school after being allowed to go home early due to the deteriorating API in George Town.

Reports by KAREN CHAPMAN, REBECCA RAJAENDRAM, JOSEPH KAOS, EDWARD RAJENDRA, KALAIVANI MURUGASAN, SHEILA SRI PRIYA, MICHELLE TAM, ALLISON LAI

GEORGE TOWN: The sudden order for all 51 schools in Penang’s southwest district to close due to the haze left many school canteen operators in the lurch.

Canteen operator Rohani Yahaya in Balik Pulau, who operates canteens in three schools, said they had already prepared food for the students when the order came in.

“We were lucky the principal let the students buy their breakfast first before going home. If not, all the food would be wasted.

“But I have friends running other canteens who had no chance to sell their food. They ended up just giving away a lot of it, ” she said.

All schools in Penang have been ordered to close today.

Earlier, 51 schools were ordered to close at about 8am yesterday as the haze became increasingly worse. At 10am, all 111 schools on the island were told to close at noon.

In Putrajaya, Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik said all schools in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Penang will be closed for the next two days, starting today and tomorrow.

They include residential schools and the Royal Military College, with students told to return home.

“Teachers have the option to work from home if their school is closed but school heads must be informed of this.

“The school management must take into account the welfare of teachers and ensure no meetings are held during this period.

“They can still be in contact with their students through Google Classroom, ” he said yesterday.

Maszlee said the closure in the four states include kindergartens while institutes of higher learning on the other hand have the autonomy to decide whether to close.

“All announcements with regard to the closure of schools will be done every day, the latest by 6pm.

“Headmasters and principals have the power to announce the closure of their schools if they feel the condition is worsening and based on the Air Pollutant Index (API) readings.

“They must then inform the state education departments and district education offices.

“Schools in these states will not have to replace the two days because the closure is categorised as a natural disaster (cuti bencana), ” Maszlee added.

If the announcement of closure comes after lessons have been conducted, he said students can remain in school and teaching and learning will continue as per normal.

“Parents however can collect their children from school if they want to, ” he said.

Maszlee said the school administration must follow the standard operating procedure as per the Education Ministry circular dated Jan 15,2019 on the haze.

In a separate statement, the ministry also said 939 schools involving 911,874 students in Selangor will be closed for two days.

These are 52 schools in Sepang, 129 in Hulu Langat, 72 in Kuala Langat, 104 in Gombak, 139 in Petaling Perdana, 86 in Petaling Utama, 68 in Hulu Selangor, 92 in Kuala Selangor, 64 in Sabak Bernam, and 133 in Klang.

The Kuala Lumpur Education Department said all schools in Kuala Lumpur will be closed

today, affecting a total of 328,004 students.

The department said this is based on API readings in the Petaling Jaya, Batu Muda and Cheras stations, which show unhealthy and very unhealthy readings.

This involves 296 schools overall, comprising 82 schools in Sentul, 66 in Keramat and 148 in Bangsar.

I deserve more Ballon d'Or awards than Messi, says Ronaldo
FOOTBALL
Wednesday, 18 Sep 2019 2:22 PM MYT

(Reuters) - Juventus forward Cristiano Ronaldo said he deserves to end his soccer career with more Ballon d'Or awards than Barcelona counterpart Lionel Messi and hopes to establish himself as the greatest player of all time.

Ronaldo, 34, has won the renowned France Football magazine trophy for the world's best player five times - as many as Messi - but is eager for more as he moves into the twilight of his career.

"Messi's in the history of football," Ronaldo told broadcaster Piers Morgan in an interview with Britain's ITV on Tuesday. "But I think I have to have six or seven or eight to be above him," he said, referring to the Ballon d'Or awards.

"I'd love it, I think I deserve it."

The Portugal captain said he was no friend of the Argentine but credited his rival for helping push him further in his own career.

"My relationship with him is, we are not friends, but we have shared this stage for 15 years," Ronaldo said. "I know that he has pushed me to be a better player and I have pushed him to be a better player as well."

Ronaldo, who also played for Manchester United and Real Madrid, has five UEFA Champions League winners' medals and led Portugal to victory at the 2016 UEFA European Championship and 2019 UEFA Nations League tournaments.

"I don't follow the records, the records follow me. I'm addicted to the success, and I don't think it's something bad, I think it's good," Ronaldo said.

"It motivates me. If you're not motivated, it's better to stop."

Malaysian man who strangled nurse said he spent money on her but got 'nothing'
NATION
Friday, 20 Sep 2019 8:06 AM MYT

SINGAPORE (ANN): A man who strangled a 28-year-old nurse in a jealous rage and tried to have sex with her corpse told police after his arrest that he spent money on her for years but ended up with "nothing", the High Court heard on Thursday (Sept 19).

Boh Soon Ho, 51, is on trial for murdering Chinese national Zhang Huaxiang at his rented Circuit Road bedroom on March 21,2016, after she rejected his sexual advances and told him about her relationships with other men.

The Malaysian cafeteria worker considered Zhang, a former colleague, to be his girlfriend as they went shopping and had meals together, even though they had never been physically intimate.

He admitted in police statements that on the day he killed her, he became angry on hearing she was going out with another man and was still in contact with her former boyfriend in China with whom she had been physically intimate.

"I questioned myself why did I provide for her and spend money on her for the past four to five years and yet I ended up with nothing," he said in a statement recorded on April 5,2016, the day he was arrested after being brought back from Malaysia.

Boh said that as these thoughts were running in his mind, he took a blue towel hanging on the door, walked to the mirror and contemplated for a while.

"I told myself if I were to strangle Huaxiang, it would be the end of me," he said.

Boh said he then walked behind her, coiled the towel around her neck and strangled her while he looked away.

On Thursday, asked for his opinion on Boh's account to the police, Institute of Mental Health (IMH) forensic psychiatrist Stephen Phang said the accused was in a "cool, deliberate, contemplative" state of mind before he strangled the victim.

"He was considering options and exercising judgment," said Dr Phang, testifying on the second day of the trial.

Dr Phang, who interviewed Boh and others who knew him, said the accused was not suffering from any mental disorder or mental illness.

In the immediate aftermath of the killing, he was able to make plans to flee to his home town of Melaka, to phone his landlord to ascertain that he would not be coming to the flat that night, and to go out to buy a suitcase and to collect his salary.

Boh had described to the psychiatrist in graphic detail the acts he carried out on Ms Zhang after strangling her, saying he felt curious because he had never seen her body before.

"His self-confessed sexualised acts with the deceased's body are clearly indicative that he was purposeful in his pursuits for personal pleasure," Dr Phang said in his report to the court.

Boh repeatedly maintained to Dr Phang that he had acted in a moment of impulse and anger. "In layman's terms, he got angry, he lost his temper at that moment," the psychiatrist said.

Dr Phang said anger was a normal human reaction in the light of Zhang's revelations to Boh, against the backdrop of his assumption that she was his girlfriend.

Boh had also admitted lying to his landlord that he was married with two children because he was embarrassed to be single in his 40s. He was 47 at the time of the killing.

Justice Pang Khang Chau, noting that there seemed to be a consensus that Boh had been "mistaken" about the status of his relationship with Zhang, asked if this could mean he was delusional.

Dr Phang replied that there was no clinical basis for such a finding.

The trial continues.

UM tops list for producing employable grads
NATION
Friday, 20 Sep 2019

By REBECCA RAJAENDRAM

image:

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia’s top institution for producing employable graduates is Universiti Malaya (UM).

The oldest university in the country rose two bands and now features in the 141-150 position of the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) Graduate Employability Rankings 2020.

It was previously in the 161-170 band last year.

QS research director Ben Sowter said all Malaysian universities have either risen or remained in the same position as last year (see table).

“Nine Malaysian universities participated in this edition of the rankings, three more than last year, ” he said in a statement yesterday.

Just behind UM, though without moving up the rankings, is Taylor’s University, which sits in the 201-250 band.

UCSI University and Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) are in the 251-300 band with UCSI moving up from the 301-350 band last year while UTAR was previously not ranked.

There are significant disparities between QS’ overall World University Rankings and this exercise, noted Sowter.

“The rankings clearly demonstrate that there is no perfect parallel between an outstanding reputational and research university, and an outstanding nurturer of student career outcomes, ” he added.

This is seen as Taylor’s University outranks UCSI University in this exercise although, in the World University Rankings, it is below UCSI University.

Taylor’s University is in the 551-520 band while UCSI University is at 442 in the QS World University Rankings 2020.

The other Malaysian institutions in the ranking are Management and Science University, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Universiti Malaysia Pahang, Universiti Sains Malaysia and Universiti Teknologi Mara (see table).

Globally, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is No.1 and retains the dual honour of being both world No.1 in the QS World University Rankings 2020, and for employability.

Stanford University is second and University of California, Los Angeles, is third.

The QS Graduate Employability Rankings 2020 offer data regarding the relationship between university choice and career outcomes.

To explore the university-employability relationship, QS uses a unique five-metric method that captures each institution’s regard among 44,000 employers worldwide, alma mater data from 29,000 highly successful individuals, institutional industry partnerships, employer presence on campus, and location-adjusted graduate employment rate.

Sowter said there were 36 new entrants within the Top 500.

There were 758 institutions included in the final evaluation of the rankings with 682 institutions ranked.

Out of that, only 501 institutions were featured in the rankings.

Put down your phone and be here now
TECH NEWS
Monday, 23 Sep 2019

By Vicki Larson

As much as technology can connect us, it can disconnect us, from ourselves and others. — 123rf.com

A few months ago, I arrived at work and realised I left my smartphone at home. I panicked.

How would my kids get in touch with me? Did I have a dermatologist appointment that day? What if that cute guy from a dating app texted me to see if I was free that night?

I was cut off from the world. Maybe you know the feeling.

Except I wasn't. The world was right in front of me – my co-workers, my computer, my notes, my coffee mug. That was really all I needed in the moment.

When the anxiety lessened, I went about my day. Funny, but after a few hours without my phone, it felt, well, liberating.

Remember when it was like that all the time? When you told your mom you'd be home by dinnertime and you were – without her tracking you?

When you could read or eat or play with your dog or do just about anything without alerts and beeps and dings and buzzes demanding your immediate attention? When you had to entertain yourself when you were bored? When you had nothing with you that tempted you to look at it obsessively?

I do. But I, like so many others, have become somewhat of a slave to my phone. Tiffany Shlain would like to help us.

Yes, that Tiffany Shlain, the Internet pioneer who founded the Webby Awards, which has honoured the best websites since 1996, and who was dubbed by Newsweek magazine as one of the "Women Shaping the 21st Century." She's been in tech from the beginning.

And yet in her new book, 24/6: The Power Of Unplugging One Day A Week, the Mill Valley resident and award-winning filmmaker makes a case for taking a day off – a Tech Shabbat, she calls it – which she, her husband, who also works in tech, and their two daughters have done for 10 years. Every Friday night, they put their phones away for 24 hours and ... do what, exactly? Things they love.

They have friends over for dinner. They play games. They cook and bake. They read. They play music. They take walks. They laugh. They engage with each other. And they have the best sleep of the week.

At 5pm Saturdays, they plug in again. But life is different.

"Every week I get to recalibrate and remember what it's like off the screens, so the other six days I am more aware and intentional of how I use them," she writes.

"If life itself is a balancing act, this one day a week reminds me where the centre of gravity is."

It sounds nice, doesn't it?

But it's more than just recalibrating and finding gravity's centre. Our phone obsession is affecting our mental health and relationships. It's greatly reducing the eye contact we have with others, she notes.

We need to create more opportunities to bring people together, face-to-face, without screens, the author believes. — 123rf.com

"Eye contact is the first and last form of communication we have. It's fundamental. And I worry we're losing it," she writes.

"Nothing is more effective for increasing empathy than in-person, face-to-face eye contact. We look up. And open our eyes."

And we don't fully know what other negative impacts our phone obsession might be doing to us.

True, we're adults, with one foot in tech and the other in the old days; we can get by with a phone left at home for a few hours or unusable on a weekend wilderness backpacking trip.

Today's kids – Shlain's are 10 and 16 – however, are growing up entirely online. And they're suffering because of it – it's making them unhappy, it's causing more family conflict, it's impacting their ability to focus at school, it's blunting their emotional development, she says. And just when it seems like we need more empathy in the world than ever before, we are raising children to be less empathetic.

As much as technology can connect us, it can disconnect us, from ourselves and others. We're not really being present, despite all the yoga, meditating and mindfulness self-help books many of us partake in.

Shlain spent many years trying to get people to connect online. Now, she wonders how to get people offline routinely so they can live better lives.

It's going to take a mindshift.

"Let's evolve how we think, live and work. We have to start viewing rest as a strength, not a weakness, and reward people for taking care of their bodies and minds, as well as creating infrastructures that support this across socioeconomic strata," she writes.

"We need to create more opportunities to bring people together, face-to-face, without screens, and we have to offer time and space for that to happen. Because the alternative is living as though technology invented us to serve its needs rather than the other way around."

Amen.

When I got home that phoneless day, sure enough there were texts from friends and a few voicemails. I answered them all that evening. No one was angry that it took so long for me to get back to them. There wasn't one "Where r u?"

Sadly, there also wasn't a message from that cute guy from the dating app. Despite all that smartphones can do, they can't always give you what you want. – The Marin Independent Journal/ Tribune News Service

Rising demand for childcare providers due to hazy weather
NATION
Monday, 23 Sep 2019

PETALING JAYA: There is an increase in demand for childcare providers as schools remain closed due the haze, but some are also concerned with overloaded childcare centres.

Childline Foundation honorary project director Datin Wong Poai Hong says that while directives have been issued to close schools, childcare centres are left to decide on their own.

“Children up to four years old are the most vulnerable to haze exposure but childcare centres have not been told to close.

“So far, the centres have only received advice from the Welfare Department to discuss with parents on the next course of action,” she said.

Wong said some childcare centres could be overloaded if parents approached them to also care for older siblings.

“Some operators may take pity on working parents as they have no other options to send their children.

“However, this may be a problem, especially as childcare providers are not trained or equipped to look after older children.

“With older children in the centre, there is more risk of injury or abuse towards younger ones as the ratio of staff to children will be stretched,” she said.

Kiddocare disclosed that there has been a 20% to 30% increase for its on-demand babysitting services when schools were closed.

“Having on-demand babysitting service, with the flexibility to choose their own time and location, allows parents to continue with their daily routine while ensuring their kids are well taken care of,” she said.

Wong said some parents also sought their service to accompany their children to hospital.

“Some children fall ill due to the haze and parents cannot take leave, so they seek our service knowing that their children can be taken care of.”

San Antonio Express-News melaporkan, Hakim Daerah Bexar, Nelson Wolff berkata, penjara terbabit berdepan 'krisis' selepas dua banduan tersalah dibebaskan dalam tempoh 12 jam Khamis lalu.

- Agensi

Apa tindak balas Trump?

They never even saw the transcript of the call. A total Witch Hunt!
    — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) September 24, 2019

Such an important day at the United Nations, so much work and so much success, and the Democrats purposely had to ruin and demean it with more breaking news Witch Hunt garbage. So bad for our Country!
    — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) September 24, 2019

Secretary of State Pompeo recieved permission from Ukraine Government to release the transcript of the telephone call I had with their President. They dont know either what the big deal is. A total Witch Hunt Scam by the Democrats!
    — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) September 24, 2019
