IPOH

Ipoh is the third city of Malaysia.  It's a relatively wealthy city, which earned its fortunes on the tin trade. Ipoh has become a modern metropolis home to over half a million people. It was once a great tin mining centre but today it is the main tourist gateway in the state. It抯 not hard to find the reason why for this delightful city has a wide range of historic, cultural, and architectural attractions which are relatively concentrated and easily accessible. It has several good museums and limestone cave temples to explore and good recreational facilities
There are a number of excellent attractions you must see on the outskirts of the city, including the Chinese cave temples, Kellie's Castle and the Tambun Hot Springs.
Ipoh is a "Chinese City". A large proportion of its population is Chinese. No wonder as one of Ipoh`s famous citizen is:
Michelle Yeoh. She's the star actress of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and former Bond girl in Tommorow Never Dies.   l
Hidden Dragon.  If you're only coming through on your way to KL or Penang, the train only stops a while so you can run out and observe for about 15 seconds before you have to re-board. If you have time to stop in Ipoh, you should try to find a stall selling Ipoh Hor Fun (a noodle dish).
Ipoh 'Ngah Choy Kai' is a bean sprout and chicken dish. Tou should try this. It's recommended by Lee Chin Thang, who lives in Ipoh and knows what and where to eat. The bean sprouts in Ipoh have a distinct quality, special taste,  that is hard to find elsewhere. It is thought to be due to the water from the limestone hills.
Many can be reached by buses from Ipoh to Gopeng and some of the more famous include Perak Tong (on the road north toward Jelapang), Kek Lok Tong and Sam Poh Tong (both on the road to Gopeng and Batu Gajah). Buses leave every hour between KL and Penang to Ipoh and you can also reach it from Taiping and Kuala Kangsar at the same intervals. .
One of the most beautiful and historic buildings in the city and an outstanding example of Moorish architecture is the Ipoh Railway Station. It is one of the most photographed buildings in Malaysia and its architecture so distinguished that it is often referred to as the 揟aj Mahal

Interesting places around Ipoh

Finished visiting to Ipoh? Are you sure? If not, please take a look back on the Ipoh local attractions.

So now you've gone through Ipoh, how about places around Ipoh? Here comes another reason why you should get a rental car when visiting Ipoh. There are some interesting places located around Ipoh where it's much more convenient if you got a car for transport. Otherwise, the only way you could take is to join a local tour or take a taxi.

Pangkor Island

Are you looking for sunshine and beaches? This is the well-known island in the state of Perak. You just need to get to the Lumut Jetty with about 45 minutes drive from Ipoh, and then take the ferry to Pangkor Island.

For detailed information about visiting Pangkor Island, check out pulau-pangkor.com.

Kellie's Castle
It's a never completed castle. About 100-years-old.

Go straight along Gopeng Road heading south to Kampar (not to be mistaken as Kampar Road), you'll finally come to a traffic-light junction with the sign board showing right turn to Kellie's Castle. But, you don't follow it. Keep going straight until you see another traffic light, turn right. Go straight along the road for about ten minutes. Then you should see the great mansion on your left.

Gua Tempurung
One word, "adventurous"!

Join for the cave adventure if you are looking for excitement. The formation of stalagmites and stalactites inside the cave will amaze you. If you go for the complete cave adventure journey, you would required to climb stone steps, ladder, crossing river inside the cave, crawling on the narrow pathway in between the limestones etc.

Isn't this sounds exciting? In less than an hour driving time, heading south from Ipoh at Gopeng Road, you should reach the Gua Tempurung.

Travel and Transportation

Have you ever been lost while traveling? Have you ever been over charged by transports providers while traveling? Have you ever been wasting too much time on the road instead of enjoying your vacation? Planning before you do anything would be a good practice to avoid any lost in terms of time, money etc. Therefore you will need the travel and transportation info if you're going to Ipoh.

Getting to Ipoh
By flight
Although there is a domestic airport in Ipoh, the Sultan Azlan Shah Airport, it has been inactive for quite some times. It used to provide a domestic flight per day from KLIA (Kuala Lumpur International Airport) to Ipoh. Anyway, there is rumour about re-open of flight route between Kuala Lumpur and Ipoh by a budget airline. If so, I surely will update the information here. =)

By train
There is a daily train service from Kuala Lumpur KTM station to Ipoh railway station, which depart at 8.45pm and arrive at 1.05am. When time reach 2007 or 2008, construction of railway from Rawang to Ipoh will be completed. Thus you can take KLIA express from KLIA to KL Sentral and then switch to KTM komuter heading to Ipoh.

By bus
Last time, you can only take a bus to Ipoh from Puduraya bus station, which is located in the heart of Kuala Lumpur city. But now, there is a new bus service provided straightaway from KLIA to Ipoh by a company called YoYo. This really save you a lot of time since you escaped yourself from any traffic jam possibilities in the Kuala Lumpur city. After about 3 and a half hours drive, the bus will stop at the terminal at Jalan Bercham, Ipoh.

Click here for more information on YoYo travel bus.

If you wish to start your bus journey from Puduraya bus station, the bus fare would be RM13.40 and it will arrive at Medan Gopeng bus station after about 3 hours drive. Medan Gopeng is located at Jalan Gopeng.

By taxi
After you reach KLIA, you can take a taxi straightaway to Ipoh too. It's about 3 hours drive to reach Ipoh.

By car
Another way to have more flexible time schedule is to get a rental car, but then you should be good at reading map and look out for signboard. It shouldn't be any problem along the way from KLIA to Ipoh using the North-South Highway; the actual challenge will be getting around Ipoh later. Just to remind you that the speed limit is 90-110km/hr all along the highway.

In addition, if you get a rental car, you would be able to visit places around Ipoh city. There are some interesting places located far from Ipoh city, such as Gua Tempurung, Kellie Castle etc.

Click here for the driving guide.

Getting around Ipoh
For getting around Ipoh, I personally don't recommend the bus service. If you depend on the bus, you properly will spend hours waiting for it.

Getting on a taxi going around Ipoh is quite affordable in Ipoh. Unlike taxi in Kuala Lumpur, there are still an amount of taxi drivers in Ipoh don't use a meter for charging fees. So, you better make sure you get one that has a meter or you discuss fee with the driver before you get on.

As mentioned above, you could always have a rental car if you want to have your own travel schedule without depending on public transport services. Just make sure you got the map and knowing the location of petrol stations. You can also ask for directions with local residents by English even though the main language used is Cantonese. To drive in Malaysia, you need a driving license. An international driving license is acceptable. In addition, driving lane in Malaysia is on the left and the driver seat is on the right hand side of the vehicle.

Where is Ipoh located?

Ipoh is the state capital of Perak. It is located north to Kuala Lumpur, about 2 hours and 15 mins travel duration by car or 15 mins travel duration by airplane. The city is a much more peaceful place if compared to the busy and crowded Kuala Lumpur. Many local residents take it as the best place of living for retirement.

Oh yea, by the way, Ipoh is given the beautiful name as 揌ill City

Perak Darul Ridzuan, the Land of Grace, covers an area of 21,000 square kilometres and has a population of about two million. The state is divided into nine districts and its major towns include lpoh, Kuala Kangsar, Taiping, Teluk lntan and Lumut, Kuala Kangsar is the royal town of Perak, while lpoh is the administrative centre and state capital. For centuries, Perak was renowned for its rich tin deposits. It is believed that the state derived its name, which means silver in Malay, from the silvery tin ore.

Perak has a proud track record of making the best of every circumstances. Despite the 'tin slump in 1983, it has succeeded in restructuring its economic development, resulting in continuous industrial growth. A sound infrastructure and facilities of international standard make it an ideal environment for business enterprise.

Originally an obscure kampung with dilapidated buildings, Ipoh, the town that tin built, has become one of the largest cities in Malaysian. Poised to become a focal point of industry, business, investment, education and social activities, Ipoh reflects the overall progress and development that the state is experiencing.

ASAL NAMA KUALA KANGSAR

Kuala Kangsar  Liman Kati   Manong
Sungai Siput   Salak Baru   Sauk
Padang Rengas   Jerlun  Karai
