Several decades in the future, an alien force known as the JAM invades Earth through a dimensional portal that suddenly appears over Antarctica. The United Nations establishes a defense force to oppose the threat and begins battling the alien invaders on a planet called "Fairy" on the other side of the dimensional portal. The main character, Rei Fukai, belongs to the Fairy Air Force (FAF), which is the mainstay of Earth's defense. Piloting the Super sylph "Yukikaze", an advanced armed tactical reconnaissance plane equipped with a near-sentient AI computer system, he is part of the 5th Division, Special Air Force (SAF). The SAF is responsible for all tactical and strategic reconnaissance operations of the FAF, usually appearing where battles are the fiercest under the order "to bring back intel at all cost, even if it means abandoning allies in distress" and consequently acquiring a defamatory nickname "Grim Reaper". When fear spreads of alien infiltration within the FAF, Yukikaze may be the last hope for humanity to end the war.

The primary fighter plane of the FAF and also the base design for the Super Sylph. A single-seater, it's less expensive to produce than the Super Sylph. Depending on the pilot, it can even defeat the Super Sylph in a dogfight, but it's getting less effective against the continuously improving JAM.

A high speed tactical recon plane. This plane may be a variant of the air superiority fighter FFR-31 Syphid but the design and the performance is completely different. This plane should have be classified as a different plane but negotiations about the production cost of this plane with the Earth government made the Super Sylph a FFR-31 variant.

Because of this, the development cost skyrocketed out of its projected cost. The original plan called for the production of 87 planes but it was reduced to 26 planes. However, according to sources in the FAF, the FAF thinks that only a few high speed recon planes would be necessary. The Super Sylph was produced in small numbers but it is still effective. The FAF achieved developing this fighter without the help of the Earth government.

The situation is different but during the Cold War the Russian military, after the arms reduction treaty with the U.S., named their medium bomber the Tu-22. However, they gave their tactical bomber that had a completely different design the Tu-22M to secure the number of bombers that are allowed in the inventory. Sometimes, a plane with a completely different design compared to the other could be given the same designation as the other plane. This is the case for the FFR-31 Syphid and the Super Sylph.

The FFR-31MR was originally designed to be a recon plane but after the conflict with the JAM escalated, there were proposed variants for combat use. The " A " was a long range interceptor, the "B" had upgraded avionics, and the " C " was given an improved engine.

The " A " was cancelled because of modifications that were given to the original FFR-31MR. The " B " and " C " variant's upgrades were given to the original FFR-31MR by the baseline 1-6 upgrades and the ICAP performance improvement program. However these upgraded planes aren't called the FFR-31MR/B or C.

After that, the high-speed " D " versions that improved aerodynamics and navigation systems were developed. This plane has a ramjet booster and is designed for long range strategic recon. Some FFR-31MR/Ds were developed but exact numbers are unknown. The majority of the FFR-31MRs are stationed at the FAF 5th Tactical Combat Wing 5th Special Squadron. This plane is used to gather information about the JAM on the planet Fairy but only a few are manufactured. Because of this, even the prototypes and experimental versions are converted for combat use. Except for the few stationed at the System Army Aircraft Testing Center and other experimental or special facilities, most of the FFR-31MRs are stationed at the 5th Tactical Combat Wing. Because of maintenance and reserve aircraft for storage, the number of FFR-31MRs never exceeds 15 planes in the 5th Tactical Combat Wing.
The reason why the reported losses of FFR-31MRs are low because it has advanced autopilot and return systems and the 5th Tactical Combat Wing concentrates on recon, not combat. This is the reason why the FFR-31MR is called the "Boomerang".

FFR-31MR/D Super Sylph

Original mechanical designer : Ikuto Yamashita

Model number :  FFR-31MR/D
Code name : Super Sylph

Unit type : multi-role fighter aircraft

Manufacturer : Fairy Air Force (FAF)
Operator : Strategic Air Force
Accommodation : pilot and co-pilot, in separate cockpits
Total length : 22.0 meters

Wingspan : 13.2 meters

Total height : 6.25 meters; with TARPS system "element" sensor blade activated 9.75 meters
Weight : empty weight 12, 188 kilograms; standard mission takeoff weight 25, 500 kilograms; maximum takeoff weight 37, 890 kilograms
Powerplant type : FNX-5011-D Phoenix Mk XI D turbofan x 2; optional ramjet booster, output unknown

Powerplant output : 10, 220 kilograms; afterburner 14, 480 kilograms

Speed : cruise: Mach 1.7 (altitude 16, 000 meters); maximum speed Mach 3.2 (altitude 16, 000 meters); fuselage load limit 9 G +

Maximum altitude : 24, 000 meters

Armament : 20 mm vulcan gun x 1, with 1, 550 rounds; hard point x 4

Equipment : TARPS = front side angle of skew camera, the vertical camera and the infrared ray picture camera, infrared ray line scan, the conformal phased array multiple band ESM sensor blade and the imaging radar etc.; Real time digital data link; Yukikaze AI system.

A modified version of the multirole recon plane. The FFR-31MR/D improved aerodynamics to reduce friction at high speeds and improved maneuverability. There are hardpoints for air-to-air missiles under the wing and the engine pod on the belly. It was originally developed as an unarmed recon plane but after lessons learned in the early stages of combat on planet Fairy, it was decided that this plane should have weapons for self defense. The D model has the same sensor and the datalink performance is same as the original FFR-31MR. However, looking at the pictures of the D model, it has a more compact TARPS pod's sensor blade.

Originally, the D model was designed to be a tactical recon plane like the FFR-31MR. However the ramjet booster on the D model was expected to improve speed so, most of the produced D models are high speed strategic recon planes equipped with ramjet boosters. However, there are some planes without the ramjet boosters. They were not fitted with ramjet boosters because of testing purposes and other reasons. It was suspected that the main reason why they were not fitted with boosters is because of financial restrictions.

It is well known that the FAF often changes their plans while the plane is in construction or being developed. The D model production had difficulties in funding. The reason why is that the serial number of the D model is dispersed among the ordinary FFR-31MR models. It is very difficult to determine how many D models are produced even though the serial numbers are not classified. However, most of the D models are stationed at the FAF Aeronautical Space Defence Agency Defense Reconnaissance Wing and conducts recon missions on planet Fairy and airspace under JAM control. Based on this information, only 5 to 7 D models are in service.

we heard a rumour that one D model without ramjet boosters is stationed at the Tactical Air Wing 5th Special Combat Squadron (the "Boomerang Unit") is used in combat for test purposes. After conducting some research, we learned that the serial number of this aircraft is 29-0113.

The picture below shows the Super Sylph stationed at the Tactical Air Wing 5th Special Combat Squadron. The plane is named "Yukikaze" and the pilot is Second Lieutenant Rei Fukai. We heard from a person that knows a lot about the Boomerang Unit says that "Yukikaze" is a special aircraft. Yukikaze may be the FFR-31MR/D without the ramjet boosters used for combat.
