Global Positioning System

"GPS" redirects here. For other similar systems, see Global Navigation Satellite System. For other uses of GPS, see GPS (disambiguation).

Artist's conception of GPS satellite in orbit

Civilian GPS receiver in a marine application.

The Global Positioning System (GPS) is currently the only fully functional Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS). More than two dozen GPS satellites are in medium Earth orbit, transmitting signals allowing GPS receivers to determine the receiver's location, speed and direction.
Since the first experimental satellite was launched in 1978, GPS has become an indispensable aid to navigation around the world, and an important tool for map-making and land surveying. GPS also provides a precise time reference used in many applications including scientific study of earthquakes, and synchronization of telecommunications networks.
Developed by the United States Department of Defense, it is officially named NAVSTAR GPS (NAVigation Satellite Timing And Ranging Global Positioning System). The satellite constellation is managed by the United States Air Force 50th Space Wing. The cost of maintaining the system is approximately US$750 million per year,[1] including the replacement of aging satellites, and research and development. Despite this fact, GPS is free for civilian use as a public good.

Simplified method of operationA GPS receiver calculates its position by measuring the distance between itself and three or more GPS satellites. Measuring the time delay between transmission and reception of each GPS radio signal gives the distance to each satellite, since the signal travels at a known speed. The signals also carry information about the satellites' location. By determining the position of, and distance to, at least three satellites, the receiver can compute its position using trilateration.[2] Receivers typically do not have perfectly accurate clocks and therefore track one or more additional satellites to correct the receiver's clock error.
Technical description

System segmentationThe current GPS consists of three major segments. These are the space segment (SS), a control segment (CS), and a user segment (US).[3]

Space segmentThe space segment (SS) is composed of the orbiting GPS satellites, or Space Vehicles (SV) in GPS parlance. The GPS design calls for 24 SVs to be distributed equally among six circular orbital planes.[4] The orbital planes are centered on the Earth, not rotating with respect to the distant stars.[5] The six planes have approximately 55

kalau sistem navigasi jalanraya, selain hardware, yg paling penting sekali availability of the most updated and detailed maps. kalau kat malaysia ni, mmg no doubt free routable maps dari malsingmaps.com yg paling updated dan detailed (secara overall). masalahnya, selain platform garmin, hanya windows mobile utk pda atau pda phone yg boleh support. mmg garmin ada juga software yg symbian based tapi hanya boleh guna kalau pakai hardware garmin. contohnya, kalau guna nokia n95+garmin gps10x, boleh guna garmin mobile xt+malsingmaps. tapi dlm kes ni, built-in gps n95 mcm dah takde fungsi.

Sebab kat atas tu dah panjang lebar tentang GPS, saya boleh berkongsi info tentang:

TIPS UTK MEMILIKI SISTEM NAVIGASI JALANRAYA DI MALAYSIA

a. Standalone GPSr yg boleh support routable map, contoh Garmin GPSMap 60CSx.

b. PDA + GPSr combo, contoh HP6915.

c. PDA biasa dengan Bluetooth (separate), pair dengan GPSr, contoh Holux GPSlim 236.

Setiap satu ada kelebihan dan kekurangan masing2. Saya memilih pilihan "c" sebab utk sesiapa yg  sudah memilik PDA, tidak perlu mengeluarkan belanja yg banyak (+-RM300) utk memiliki sistem navigasi  jalanraya.

Aku rekomen Holux GPSlim, model ni popular, pakai bateri compatible Nokia BL-5C High Capacity 850 mAh. Chipset jenis SirfStar III, performance mmg tiptop, even better drp chipset Texas Instruments dlm N95. Harga +-RM350 dari online seller (mcm kat Lowyat.net forum). Aku pun pakai yg ni jugak, mmg berbaloi beli ni, modal tak sampai RM400 (sbb dah ada PDA), dah boleh pakai in-car Navigation System mcm kat bawah ni.

Buat masa sekarang ni, kat Malaysia, aku rasa tak berbaloi beli phone yang ada built-in GPSr kalau nak guna feature GPSnya kecuali platform Windows Mobile, sbb map Malaysia yg bagus mmg yag lain takleh support selain Windows Mobile. Ataupun nak kena beli pulak external GPSr brand Garmin, baru boleh baca map ni. Contohnya, kalau dah beli N95, pastu kena beli plak Garmin GPS10x utk guna GPS map lain.

boleh pilih samada nak guna garmin que atau mapking, masing2 ada kelebihan. nak pakai dua2 pun boleh. nak pakai serentak dua2 pun boleh, kalau keupayaan processor+memory membenarkan. cuma kalau nak guna garmin que dengan lain2 brand gpsr kecuali garmin kena ada translator app mcm gps proxy (free tapi kdg2 complicated) atau gpsgate (+rm tapi simple setup+better accuracy) utk convert nmea protocol ke garmin protocol.

map utk garmin que dan mapking hanya boleh guna dgn software masing2, regardless version wm. utk version malsingmaps, biasanya kedua jenis ni di release serentak dan content asasnya sama.

mapking map, very straightforward, download and copy in pda. cuma ikut yg sebetulnya, mapking map version malsingmaps ni hanya boleh guna kalau ada same unlocked map utk region yg sama.contohnya, kalau dah beli map malaysia original dari mapking dan unlock, baru boleh pakai map malaysia mapking version malsingmaps. but this does not apply kpd mapking yang dah "dipecahkan" <- yg ni boleh fahamkan?

utk upload map garmin que ke pda, sebetulnya kena guna garmin mapsource (dlm cd dpt masa beli garmin gpsr), tapi boleh guna lain2 app utk bypass mapsource, contoh mcm patchimg. tapi jangan risau, setiap kali ada realease baru, akan ada yg siapkan map yg dah tak pyh guna mapsource atau patchimg lagi. download dan copy je ke pda. nama file map garmin que mesti "GMAPSUPP.IMG" dan disimpan dlm folder "Garmin" yg selari dgn folder "Garmin Que" di lokasi yg sama masa install dulu, samada main atau storage memory. kalau takde folder ni, kena create new folder dan namakan spt berkenaan. kalau tak ikut format ni, garmin que takkan load map tu.

garmin que blh d/load dari site garmin. mapking kena beli, kalau taknak boleh cari yg takyah beli atau pm aku. advantage mapking, ada 3d interface, sedap sikit mata memandang banding 2d mcm tengok dari atas. cuma feature lain kurang sikit. contohnya dgn garmin que, routing algorithm, routing details, routing management far better dari mapking. selain guna utk road navigation, garmin que pun ada features yg sesuai guna utk hiking, off road, dsb. bagi aku elok ada dua2, pada masa2 tertentu, salah satu lagi sesuai utk sesuatu situasi yg berlainan. ada satu lagi yg aku guna, pathaway 4, utk guna dgn personal maps.

pathaway aku guna mcm utk hiking, tracking jalan baru, dsb. pathaway ni boleh pakai map raster mcm jpg (garmin que & mapking ni pakai map vector based). so just scan atau screen grab gambar satelit dari google earth, pastu calibrate dengan point yg ada reference, dah boleh guna map tu. actually utk ppc, ada byk sofware gps mcm ni, tapi aku guna pathaway sebab guna low memory dan map dia boleh otomatik rotate mcm garmin que dll. tak byk gps map software yg raster boleh auto rotate. kalau yg takleh rotate, contoh kalau map tu ikut utara tapi kita bergerak ke selatan, position kita dah jadi mcm terbalik la.

Guna GPS utk track seseorang

Sinopsis:

Minimum requirement person yg nak kita track tu mesti ada Java+GPRS+Bluetooth phone pair dengan BT GPSr. Install free java app GPSGate Mobile, more info here (utk lain2 platform mcm Pocket PC dan Symbian pun ada).
