Wheelchair gifts for 2 to cherish

Nadzirah Zambrul Amir and Mohd Adam Irfan Zambrul Amir with their
mother Hafizah Salleh. Both children were born with brittle bone disease.

MENTAKAB: A brother and sister sit in the doorway of their dilapidated wooden house, wistfully watching the village children play.

Every now and then, the girl smiles down at her younger brother, gently stroking his hair as she listens to his excited chatter.

Four-year-old Mohd Adam Irfan Zambrul Amir is probably too young to realise he will never be able to run and play with the other children. However, Nadzirah Zambrul Amir, 11, has accepted it.

Both children were born with osteogenesis imperfecta, or brittle bone disease, a genetic disorder in which the body is unable to produce the protein collagen, an important building block of bone structure.

Their 31-year-old mother Hafizah Salleh says she has lost count of the number of times her children have broken their bones.

"I have to be very careful, even when I lift them in my arms. A simple mistake could cause a fractured limb," she said at their Kampung Mambang Berulang home last Tuesday.

Usually the condition is passed down from the parents, but there is no history of the disease in the family. Their eldest child, 14-year-old Najwa Syahirah is completely healthy and excels at sport in school. Nadzirah and Adam are the victims of a "de novo", or sporadic mutation of their genes.

Hafizah takes her children to the hospital in Temerloh twice a month for check-ups and medication. Both are scheduled for another round of surgery soon to improve their bone structures.

Hafizah says Nadzirah is doing well in school. She is in Year Five at Sekolah Kebangsaan Bandar Mentakab. A neighbour drives her to school, as her condition does not allow her to take the bus.

She used to move around in a wheelchair donated by generous New Straits Times readers seven years ago, but it is too old now.

But the NST Charity Unit has been keeping track of Nadzirah and recently gave her a new one, along with another one for Adam. The RM1,900 wheelchairs have special features for children.

"We are grateful for these gifts. My husband and I wouldn抰 have been able to buy them ourselves," says Hafizah, a housewife.

Her husband, Zambrul Amir Toshin, 34, works at an electrical appliances shop, earning RM900 a month.

"It抯 tough for our family, but we will not despair. This is a divine test."

Equal rights
Wheel Power by ANTHONY THANASAYAN

WITH our 50th National Day celebrations just around the corner, I took the opportunity recently to speak to two advocates for disability issues. I quizzed them about their Merdeka wishes, especially in relation to the disabled community.

Chong Tuck Meng, who hails from Bentong in Pahang, became permanently paralysed from his neck down after falling off his friend抯 motorcycle as they were travelling along the Karak Highway.

Now, 25 years later, Chong, 45, is a good example of someone who never says die, come what may.

Three years ago, the wheelchair-user founded the Kuala Lumpur-based NGO, Perwira K9 Malaysia, which has 300 members. Chong, who is its current adviser, says that although he is unable to hold up the national flag and fly it because of his condition, it抯 all right.

He defied the odds by swimming 13km from Satang Island to Santubong beach.

ONE-LEGGED MAN: Junaidi Pauzan (centre) being escorted by Fire and
Rescue Department personnel after completing his swim from Pulau Santang
to Santubong beach on Saturday evening

One-legged man conquers rough seas for Merdeka
By : Sulok Tawie

KUCHING: For anyone, braving the high seas and strong winds in a seven nautical mile (13km) swim from Pulau Satang to Santubong beach would be quite a feat. But for a man with only one leg, it would be an exceptional achievement.

Junaidi Pauzan, 55, who lost his leg in an accident four years ago, did just that on Saturday evening, setting perhaps a record of sorts for the disabled in Sarawak.

The government driver, exhausted after the gruelling marathon swim, looked elated.

"I had always wanted to swim from the island to Santubong. I am happy that I have done it," said Junaidi, who had tried twice before but failed.

He had been warned by the Fire and Rescue Department that the seas were unfriendly. In fact, he was even asked to try another time.

But, he refused and is glad he did.

He also rejected a suggestion that he should swim within the protection of a net, as is the practice for swimmers over long distances.

Due to his persistence , he was asked to write a letter that he and his family would not take legal action against anyone, including the government, if something were to happen to him along the way.

"I wanted to do this badly as a present to Malaysia on its 50th Merdeka anniversary and for my family and I."

After a delay of an hour due to very rough seas and strong winds, Junaidi finally jumped into the sea about 8am and arrived at Santubong beach at 4.15pm.

"It was a very tough swim, especially for a person of my age and a person with one leg," he said, stressing however that his determination to achieve his ambition compelled him not to give up.

The rough seas and being stung by jellyfish nearly made Junaidi give up after the first few nautical miles.

Santubong MP Datuk Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar praised Junaidi, calling him a role model for all Malaysians.

"He showed great determination and self-belief despite his physical disability. He has shown to us that willpower overrides limitations. Any obstacle can be overcome."

Junaidi抯 wife, Hasanah Sidi, and their five children, greeted him warmly when he arrived at Santubong beach.

Also present were several friends from the Sarawak Society of the Disabled, tourists and villagers of Kampung Santubong.

As soon as Junaidi reached dry land, he raised the Jalur Gemilang, signifying his pride in being a Malaysian

Kerajaan prihatin nasib OKU

Blind girl aims for 8As in PMR
By : Rina De Silva

Amanda Kong Hwei Zhen is inspired by the adventures of boy magician
Harry Potter and the children in the Famous Five series by Enid Blyton.

KUALA LUMPUR: The adventures of fictitious boy magician Harry Potter and the Famous Five series fired the imagination of a 13-year-old blind student.

Blind since birth, Amanda Kong Hwei Zhen has been reading J.K. Rowling抯 Harry Potter novels and Enid Blyton抯 books in Braille even before she started school.

The stories sparked her determination to succeed in life and to live life to the fullest like her heroes in the novels.

Shy by nature, Amanda insisted on going to a national school rather than to a school for the blind as she wanted to experience the same challenges as sighted students.

It wasn抰 easy as Amanda could only listen to the lessons and not see the explanations on the blackboard. She only attended Braille class for Mathematics.

But the gutsy girl refused to give up and her hard work finally paid off when she became the top blind student nationwide in the Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) examination last year.

Amanda scored 5As, making her one of the 17 top scorers among the 50 students who sat the examination at her school, Sekolah Kebangsaan Sungai Kantan, Kajang.

Yesterday, her hard work was recognised by the Society of the Blind in Malaysia (SBM), which awarded her a certificate of recognition and RM200.

Spurred by her success in the UPSR, Amanda, who is now in Form One, has set a target of 8As for her Penilaian Menengah Rendah (PMR) examination in two years

sejak baca artikel dari page 1 sampai page 13,

i'm conclude that OKU should involve together with normal national education system and also with normal student because OKU's learning skill will more increase and improved in term of input knowledge receive in normal class rather than OKU receive special programme education for disable ...

insya Allah.. OKU person will more easy to adapt in the way to road of success in future despite high challenge in the normal education system ...

sepatutnya by right tak yah la kena bayar rm24 tu ; apa pun selamat jalan dan aku harap kau punya trip berjalan lancar ;

Alhamdulillah, my trip went well. As can be expected from a Low Cost Carrier, FireFlyz has rescheduled both confirmed flights. Perhaps Ffly has to fill up the seats before it can fly to minimize cost.

Treatment:-

- Myself as OKU - not in question here as the crew were not aware nor did I feel the need to inform. Blame it on the Fokker engine noise for my not hearing. Heehee...

- My mother - I had to get a wheelchair because it hurt her left foot to walk and it was quite a distance from the departure gate to the airoplane. Airport and airline crew were very helpful, they helped my mother climb the stairs right up to her seat and the same goes when we stepped down the plane.

Of all the people I had to deal with - MAS and Firefly - I'd say only 1 of 15 of them who was annoying. This dude had his nose higher in the air than the rest. He told me that Firefly does not allow wheelchair bound persons to fly. I replied than my mother can walk up the stairs slowly, she's not an invalid. It's not like I couldn't understand the Rules & Regulations when booking the tix. Then, when my mother was seated & waiting for me to check in, he passed by and told me that to use the wheelchair, I had to pay. I held on to my patience and said simply: I have already paid. Dang loser! The rest of the crew were very nice to us. I didn't mind paying RM24 for the use of wheelchair as it was better than dragging the one at home around.

To be honest, it doesn't seem likely that low-cost carrier will be willing to install the required equipment for disabled people (wheelchair bound) since Fokker plane is tiny & cramped. It will take a lot of modification and drive up the cost to fly for not only disabled persons but normal passengers as well. If Firefly or AirAsia were to install the ramp/lift/seat for disabled passenger,  I believe the airlines will spread the extra cost over the normal overhead. Additional issues are related to higher insurance and safety during emergency landing. I doubt if the majority is willing to sacrifice for the minority - that's life.

OKU tagih janji penganjur konsert

Folks unhappy with centre for special kids

By VIVIENNE PAL

AFTER nearly 15 years of existence, the Pusat Penjagaan Kanak-kanak Cacat Taman Megah in Petaling Jaya suddenly found itself the subject of a public controversy.

The centre occupies four houses in Jalan SS24/10 and Jalan SS24/12, and accommodates some 140 physically and mentally disabled children and adults, aged from eight months old to 54 years old.

The dispute arose after residents in the area complained about noise, poor hygiene and too many inmates.

The centre has alleged that the residents wanted it to move. The Taman Megah Residents Association (Tamera), representing the residents, however, has refuted the charge, saying that they merely want the centre to overcome the noise and hygienic problems and stop further expansion.

According to centre committee member Michael Lim , the premises

Program pupuk sayang OKU

揝ukan platform terbaik membina kecergasan fizikal dan minda selain keseronokan.

揋olongan mahasiswa perlu sedar tanggungjawab sosial kepada masyarakat apatah lagi apabila bergelar guru,
