OKU masih dipinggir

PETALING JAYA 3 Dis.

Ahmad Shamsuri Muhammad

PETALING JAYA: He's able and willing to work. He has a degree in counselling and he is working on his Master's.

He has sent out at least 40 job applications but all have been rejected.

Ahmad Shamsuri Muhammad is blind. And the 25-year-old is but one of the thousands of disabled people struggling to find jobs.

"It's hard to find a job. Most employers feel they need to change the environment to accommodate us," he said.

Unable to find a job after he got his first degree from Universiti Malaya, he applied for and got a scholarship to do a postgraduate degree at the university.

"Fortunately, I now have a job waiting for me as a tutor once I graduate," he said.

Not many share his luck, and problems arise when they have to pay off their study loans, he added.

According to the Malaysian Confederation of the Disabled (MCD) president Mah Hassan Omar, there are almost 1.5 million disabled people in the country and "less than 0.01 per cent are able to find employment".

"Due to their inability to penetrate the public and private sectors, many have no choice but to venture out on their own," said Mah, who is also blind and owns his own law firm.

Mah hoped that events like yesterday's International Disabled Day 2007 would create more awareness in society "to help the disabled grow as citizens of this country".

MCD secretary Bathmavathi Krishnan, who has been confined to a wheelchair since an accident 32 years ago, said public amenities in general were not disabled-friendly.

"Most of the transportation amenities and some buildings do not cater to the needs of the disabled," she said.

wanna talk a bit about disabled people and how little done to help
them access facilities -- mainly in transportation -

there's an international day of disabled persons on 3rd dec --
and this day was yet another wonderful opportunity to promote
understanding and increase public awareness of disability issues as well
to promulgate the importance of integration and well-being of people
with disabilities --

..however, i must add that here in malaysia, one year after action and
inclusion for the disabled (AID) wrote a letter regarding the 2006 international
day of disabled persons, nothing of any substance has changed.....

- let's consider, for instance, the issue of disabled-friendly public transport
facilities and buildings...( we talked about this a bit in earlier post - mind ya)

accessibility to the majority of facilities, such as buildings, public transport, footpaths
and road crossings, even some of those that were recently set up, is not possible
since they have not been properly designed to make them usable by everyone...
(and canada where i resided before -- all these facilities were provided to disabled
people --  and then some -- )

- universal access to buildings is still a novelty and is by no means universally available...
even ome buildings built in the past 12 months are totally inaccessible to people in wheelchairs -!!
as we can see that RapidKL even introduced so-called disabled-accessible buses,
but these vehicles have been designed incorrectly, so that the area designed to
accommodate two persons using wheelchairs occupies almost half of the available floor space,
and there are only two seats in this half of the bus....

they should look into the built of  the buses in british columbia!! --- where the disabled with
wheelchair can access the bus easily with automatic elevator at the bus door ---
and in Penang, the situation is worse because the new RapidPenang buses are universally
inaccessible...

most pavements are still not accessible to persons using wheelchairs, the blind, and the elderly...
there are sometimes ramps of sorts, but more often than not, they are too steep or the curbs
are too high, there are obstructions on pavements, such as lamp posts, sign posts,
non-flush manholes, etc....

..although tactile markings for the blind are sometimes installed, some of these do not
follow required specifications.....

last but not least -- let's hope something can be done to help disabled people to lead
their life easier and given priority in their daily basis --  we, the normal people god willing
should lend the helping hand and make it simpler for them as we are lucky enough compare
to them in facing the real world -

Mengintegrasi golongan OKU

KEMESRAAN OKU pelbagai kaum...(Dari kiri) Taufik Ahmad (berdiri),
