Macross Launching Ceremonies

Macross 2009.2.22 Launch Event Wrap-up

by Adrian A. Lozano

The Macross SDF-1 launching ceremony based on fictional events which played out during the first and second episodes of the original Macross series took place on Sunday Febuary 22nd at the UDX Akiba Square in Akihbara Tokyo. The first episode originally aired in October of 1982 but the actual launch ceremony taking place in the animation took place in February 2009. With the phenomenal success of Big West抯 most recent Macross installment Macross Frontier a two week celebration campaign started on February 7 in the Akihabara.

Akihabara played stand-in for Ataria Island and the UDX building played the part of the SDF-1, and for sixteen days old and new Macross fans ran around to participating electronic stores, toy shops, restaurants, and maid cafes in the hunt for Macross stamps. Fans needed to collect at least three of the sixteen Macross character stamps found at locations on the stamp rally entry card. The entry card could then be taken to the Tokyo Anime Center for a chance to win either one of the Daedalus or Prometheus event entry tickets limited to 500 per event.

The launch event started at 10:00 am featuring limited event only goods and new products. Yamato Toys showed off a 1/2000 scale Do You Remember Love SDF-1. Even for a mockup it featured amazing details and it even had super tinny 1/2000 Mecha to go along with it. We also got our fist look at Bandai抯 impressive Macross Quarter DX Chougoukin. It will be some time before any of these items hit retail and online stores but next month Banpresto will have out their Ichiban KUJI Macross Frontier prize items at participating convenient stores.

At 4:00 the Prometheus talk show started and was broken into two parts. Part A was a prearranged Q&A with Shoji Kawamori, Haruhiko Mikimoto, and Kazutaka Miyatake. Part B was Macross F series and movie oriented with Shoji Kawamori, Yuuichi Nakamura (Alto), Aya Endo (Sheryl) and Megumi Nakajima (Ranka). The three voice actors did narration over mostly series footage and a brief new shot of movie footage along with a new Ranka Lee song called "Sō Da Yo". The talk show ended with everybody singing happy birthday lead by Nakajima for Kawamori, Nakamura, and Endo each having birthdays in February. Still very little information was hinted about the movie other than what was presented. Following the event Joysound did a fan karaoke concert.

The Daedalus event kicked off at 6:30 with a brief projected rundown of early Macross history prior to the animated launch ceremony. The reenacted launch had new and old animation and was synced with flashing stage lights and smoke machines when the SDF-1抯 main cannon fired and again when the space fortress launched. Michio Hazama (Captain Bruno J. Global) and Katsumi Suzuki (Hayao Kakizaki) did live voice over with the animation, and yes there were Kakizaki steak jokes. Nobutoshi Hayashi (Basara Nekki Voice Actor) sang a acoustic set for the first part of the mini concert, an emotional Megumi Nakajima closed out the event with a "My Boyfriend's a Pilot", 揝eikan Hikou

Shōji Kawamori Interview from Otona Anime Magazine Volume # 9

Title: We ask Supervising Director Kawamori! The Macross Frontier World

Interviewer - Although we covered many topics during the previous interview, I抎 like to specifically ask questions about how the world of Macross F is set up.

Kawamori - (laughs) There probably are things that I either can抰 talk about, don抰 have a definite answer, or have to keep secret.

Interviewer - Is that so? (laughs) Then I抣l probably ask questions about topics which I probably shouldn抰 ask about

Kawamori - Was that the date? (laughs) There are plans from the early stages you keep in mind whenever you抮e having story problems, although it抯 not like having a plan A, plan B, and plan C. Although these plans are present, whenever you are doing things like the continuity for a scernario you created, you don抰 always remember what has already been established. Viewers remember things because they watch the final outcomes as they are shown on TV. In my case, since I sometimes work on things which are still in progress, there are times when I think, 揌ow did that go?

Interviewer - I see. Things were happening in the background and there were suspicious things happening.

Kawamori - Since I wanted to do things like that for the later half, I did the school campus things during the first half. (laughs)

Interviewer - (laughs) Everyone was cheerful and having a good time. So what about the human aspects of the Macross world? Alto抯 family is an old family that is Japanese, isn抰 it?

Kawamori - They抮e not so much Japanese as they are people of Japan. Since Japan dissolved as a nation, I guess you could say that they are of Japanese descent.

Interviewer - In the Macross world, are the traditional arts preserved?

Kawamori - Since the first devastation of the Earth, there has been trauma concerned with that time, so there has been a movement to preserve Earth culture from the beginning year of the 21st century to the year 2009. Right after World War 2, after Europe had been severely bombed, it was rebuilt just like it originally was. It抯 like they were trying to pass on it抯 history and tradition.

Interviewer - Then it was similar to having things like living national trasures and intangible cultural assets?

Kawamori - It抯 similar to having those things, but even then it抯 not like everyone goes to see those things. When it comes to popularity, everyone is critical.

- There was still lots to talk about, but the contents were so in depth that we couldn抰 fit them into this issue. To be continued in the next issue.

Kawamori Shouji Profile: Born in 1960 in Toyama prefecture. Active as a mecha designer since his student days and was the leading person who introduced the tranformation ability of the Valkyrie. At the age of 24, he made his directorial debut with the movie 揗across Do You Remember Love?
