BMW has the BMW Concept X6 on show at the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show, but we all know that the concept bit in its name can be pretty muchdropped as the car is very close to production, with nearly undisguisedmules spotted on the roads just right before the motor show began.
BMW calls the Concept X6 a Sports Activity Coupe or SAC if you like. The coupe-like roofline dropped immediately right after the position of the steering wheel inside the car. The four-door coupe form is combined with thecommanding driving position of a 4X4 vehicle. All of the classic BMWdesign cues are there - double kidney grilles, double headlamps withcorona rings, Hofmeister kink.

With this Concept X6 also debuts a new technology from BMW called Dynamic Performance Control. Dynamic Performance Control works hand in hand with the xDrive four-wheel drive system to spread drive torque as required in all situations. Think of it as DSC stability control without cutting off power or braking, instead purely achieving control in understeer or oversteer conditions by varying power between the two wheels at the rear. While DSC applies power to the inner wheels when the car is oversteering, DPC achieves this by shifting more power to the outer wheels.

If you think about it, Dynamic Performance Control is most likely BMW抯 own branding slapped onto GKN Driveline抯 Vector-Drive torque-vectoring rear axle that was announced sometime towards the end of July 2007.
Watch out for another post about another special X6 concept featuring ActiveHybrid technology. See more photos of the new BMW Concept X6 after the jump. There are no interior shots though.

BMW X6 ActiveHybrid

John Lamm, Road and Track

BMW chose its home show to unveil its new X6 model, its take on the next generation of SUVs. Unlike its boxy station-wagon-like X5, the X6 is characterized as a Sports Activity Coupe, even though it has four doors.

The steeply raked rear atop the muscular body is designed to be more sporty than utilitarian. The front view sports a toothy BMW trademark split grille, while the flowing lines and sleek greenhouse are contrasted by muscular wheel arches filled with 21-in. wheels. It will be interesting to see if it can carve out a niche in the crowded SUV market梩he closest competitor to the X6 is Infiniti抯 FX35/45.

To address concerns that SUVs are fuel-wasting behemoths, BMW抯 thinly disguised concept of the X6 production vehicle was introduced as the ActiveHybrid, which incorporates a dual-mode hybrid transmission jointly developed with GM and DCX. This system uses two different electric motors, one for low speeds and the other for highway cruising. In addition to providing the correct levels of torque, depending on road conditions, engine loads and on- or off-road use, the X6 ActiveHybrid boasts a 20-percent reduction in emissions and fuel consumption when compared to a car of equal size on a conventional drivetrain.

The X6 is scheduled to be built alongside the X5 at BMW抯 U.S. assembly plant in South Carolina with an on-sale date sometime next year.

The second BMW X6 Concept shown at the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Showdemonstrates BMW抯 ActiveHybrid technology, which BMW says is superiorto conventional hybrid vehicles in terms of driving dynamics - lookingat the assortment of hybrids on the market today we can safely saythat抯 not too far from the truth. BMW rates an ActiveHybrid car ashaving 20% better consumption and emissions compared to a comparablecar with conventional drivetrain technology.
The BMW Concept X6 ActiveHybrid combines a combustion engine and twoelectric motors. Keeping to their promise of a sporty drivingexperience, BMW says despite electric motors being used BMW retains theappropriate touch-based and acoustic feedback never seen before on ahybrid vehicle.
The combustion engine and two electric motors are connected to eachother via three planetary gearsets, allowing a power split between thecombustion engine and electric motors in two ranges. At any time, thecar can be powered by either only the combustion engine or only theelectric motors. The Concept X6 ActiveHybrid also uses an ECVTelectrical continuously variable transmission and is able to adjustpower between the combustion engine and the electric motors in tworanges - one for low speeds and one for high speeds. Power to thewheels also go through a fixed ratios as BMW thinks this is veryimportant for the whole driving experience - the feeling of swappingcogs.

The electric motors can also be run in reverse to harvest wastedpower during braking. This power is used to charge a high-volt energystorage unit. BMW is already doing something like this with BrakeEnergy Regeneration, something that抯 appearing on conventionalcombustion engine BMWs in the European market.
In power split drive mode, one of the electric motors acts as agenerator, converting some of the engine抯 power into electricalcurrent to charge the battery. The power can also be channeled into thesecond electric motor. This second electric motor gets power fromeither the first electric motor or the battery and generates mechanicalpower for the output drive shaft.
The ActiveHybrid hybrid drive system is BMW抯 variant of the GlobalHybrid Cooperation hybrid system, a joint project between BMW, GeneralMotors and DaimlerChrysler to develop next generation hybrid drivesystems.
