Welcome to the Greatest Hobby in the world!

Post Last Edit by Funderland at 16-6-2012 18:36

Model Raildroading is an absorbing leisure-time activity that provides plenty of creative opportunities and interesting projects of a  technical nature.

Model railroading (or we called Model Trains in Malaysia) is the greatest hobby in the world, but you may wonder why say so. According to WGH, it is because of “choice.”

A quote from WGH:
Model railroading offers a variety of activities for all ages and interests. Are you a history buff? You’ll enjoy researching a specific time period to model your layout after. Enjoy woodworking? You can create custom benchwork and wooden structures. Perhaps you have an artistic flair, which can be used to create unique scenery, layout accessories, and backdrops. The good news is you don’t have to do all of these to be a model railroader. You can concentrate on the areas you find most interesting now, and learn other skills if and when you like.

Keira Kuhlman and her brother Quinn, 18 months, watch passing model trains pass Saturday at the ninth annual Lawrence Model Railroad Club train show

Model railroading is the hobby that can include the entire family. Married couples can participate in the hobby together. And kids of all ages have always been fascinated by model trains. What better gift can you give your children or grandchildren than your time? You’ll be creating precious memories together as you share a lifetime hobby that teaches patience and the joys of creating something with your hands.

Model Raildroading incorporates a variety of interesting activities from building, maintaining, upgrading and operating a train set. What kind of world you create, where you create it, and how much time you spend in it...is entirely over to you

You can build a loyout in the solitude of your basement, attic, shed or garage workshop...or you can sit in a sun lounger and watch trains weave around your garden... or you can join a local model-railroading club and share your ideas and experiences with others. The opportunities are endless!

Thanks Jason and Bharani from LowYat.net for visiting us about the Model Trains

Black Swan in front of the Riviera express

Post Last Edit by Funderland at 18-6-2012 11:05

The H 0-model of the 10 001 as a matching illustration in full motion.
The BR 10 001 and it’s almost indentical twin sister locomotive 10 002 were at home at the BW Bebra in Northern Hesse since the spring of 1958. From that base they were used for heavy express train traffic between Frankfurt and Hanover, the Southern part of the North-South axis, and they pulled amongst other trains also the Riviera-Express.

The Riviera Express was traditionally named for its connection between Ventimiglia and Amsterdam. It was an international express train that also passed through Gotthardo, Basel, Karlsruhe and Cologne.

The train was separated in Karlsruhe and one part of it was joined with a wing train heading for Hamburg-Altona. This wing train carried the number D 167/168 and featured besides the regular 1st and 2nd class passenger coaches also Italian passenger coaches, a dining coach, as well as luggage and couchette coaches.

In the early days of the epoch III the coaches still dated back to the time before the war, however they were quickly replaced by wagons from newly produced series as was appropriate for such a famous train.

The locomotives were delivered by Krupp in Essen in 1957 and after certification and thorough testing they were stationed from 1958 until 1962 at the BW Bebra. There after they were based at the BW Kassel because due to their heavy axel load they could only be operated on selected main lines.

It was 26.503 mm long, weighed 109 tons, it had a driving wheel diameter of 2.000 mm, the smoke box doors were cone shaped and it was only partially cladded. With an induced power of 1.839 kW it reached a top speed of 140 km/h.

Whereas the 10 001 was equipped with only a supplemental oil firing system (it was refitted later), the 10 002 was operating with main oil firing from the start.

The series 10 was never put into mass production because of general structural changes and the continuously progressing electrification of the mail lines. In January of 1967 the 10 002 suffered a break on a pushing rod and was decommissioned. It was scrapped in 1972 at the BW Offenburg.

In June of the following year the 10 001 had to quit its active service at the Deutsche Bundesbahnen (DB) as well. This locomotive however was preser-ved for the ensuing ages and can be seen until today in the Deutschen Dampfloko -motiv-Museum in Neuenmarkt-Wirsberg.
