Blackburn Rovers 0-1 Wigan Athletic

A late goal from Antolin Alcaraz earned Wigan Athletic a win that ensures they will play in the Barclays Premier League next season, but consigned Blackburn Rovers to relegation from the top flight.

Blackburn needed a victory to give themselves any hope of staying up and their best effort fell to Yakubu early in the second half but his effort was cleared off the line.

Wigan threatened with Franco di Santo having a shot saved by Paul Robinson for Wigan and Shaun Maloney heading over from close range late in the second half.
But Alcaraz headed in from a Jean Beausejour corner in the 87th minute to seal the three points for Wigan that takes them up to 15th in the table.

Santos chief Nei Pandolfo has admitted they're exploring the prospect of re-signing AC Milan star Robinho.

The Brazilian giants are actively seeking outside sponsorship to fund the sensational move.

Pandolfo told TMW: "We're interested in him. He is a great player and I would like him to return. But we have to see if there are the conditions to do it. The world is going through a difficult period from an economic point of view.

"We will see, the intention is to take him to Santos. But now all talk would be premature."

Former Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas is being linked with Kenny Dalglish's job at Liverpool.

The Daily Express says Reds owner John W Henry is weighing up the future of Dalglish after a disappointing season.

A model of a football director overseeing a young coach remains favoured by the American owners.

Villas-Boas held an interest for Liverpool before Dalglish was appointed a year ago this week and could be revisited now that he's available.

AVB's management are currently in contact with AS Roma as Luis Enrique considers his future in Italy.

West Ham sealed their place in the Championship play-off final by completing an emphatic semi-final victory over Cardiff.
The Hammers came into the second leg with a firm grip on the tie courtesy of a 2-0 win in Wales last week.
They strengthened this in the 15th minute when captain Kevin Nolan headed in from a Matt Taylor corner.
They made sure of the win when Ricardo Vaz Te fired in a superb drive with Nicky Maynard adding a late third.
Sam Allardyce's side remain on course to make amends for allowing automatic promotion to slip through their fingers. They are now just one game away from the Premier League, with either Birmingham or Blackpool representing the final hurdle at Wembley on Saturday, 19 May.

Former Chelsea ace Arjen Robben will snub a new deal at Bayern Munich after his row with Franck Ribery - which could pave the way for a second spell in the Premier League.

Manchester City, Tottenham and Liverpool have all been linked with a move for the flying Dutchman, 28, who has become one of the most feared wingers in Europe.

Any move to England looked dead in the water after it emerged that Robben was on the verge of extending his stay in Munich by signing a fresh contract until 2015.

But, according to German newspaper Bild, Robben is now unlikely to agree to the deal and will look elsewhere this summer after a run-in with Frenchman Ribery.

It was reported that the teammates came to blows at half-time of Bayern Munich's Champions League semi-final first leg victory over Real Madrid, during which the pair openly rowed over who would take a free-kick.

It has been revealed that Bayern, who have been keen to downplay the incident, arranged a lunch between the pair the day after the clash in a bid to patch things up.

But Robben is reportedly unhappy in the way that Bayern have kept quiet, instead of supporting him - and was furious when they fined Ribery just £40,000 for the offence, a fraction of his weekly wage.

So unhappy were the midfielder and his agent, who is also his father, that they have decided to snub the new contract - and could begin to look elsewhere.

Robben is out of contract in June 2013, when he could leave on a free, so Bayern may decide to cash in this summer to avoid a cut-price fee in January.

Bayern's president Uli Hoeness confirmed: "All I know is that he was just about to put pen to paper, and now that has all been postponed."

Borussia Dortmund have broken the Bundesliga record for most points in a single season after thumping Freiburg 4-0 at home on Saturday.

Dortmund have finished the campaign on 81 points, two ahead of the previous record held by Bayern Munich who recorded 78 during the 1998-99 season.

Polish duo Robert Lewandowski and Jakub Blaszczykowski both grabbed doubles in the convincing victory to round off Dortmund’s second consecutive Bundesliga title in stunning fashion.

Their tally also beats Bayern’s record from the 1971-72 campaign, who would have claimed 79 points if teams at the time received three for a win.

Dortmund will be looking to complete a domestic double when they face Jupp Heynckes’ men in the DFB Pokal final next weekend.

BUCHAREST: Diego Simeone memberi amaran kepada barisan pemain Atletico Madrid mengenai tentangan yang bakal diberikan Athletic Bilbao apabila kedua-dua kelab dari Sepanyol itu bertembung pada final di Bucharest bagi merebut kejuaraan Liga Europa, awal pagi esok.

Walaupun baru lima bulan dilantik sebagai jurulatih, Simeone berjaya membawa Atletico melangkah ke final kedua Liga Europa dalam tempoh tiga tahun selepas wakil Sepanyol itu merangkul kejuaraan Eropah hasil kemenangan 2-1 ke atas Fulham pada 2010.

Namun beliau yang mengambil tempat Gregorio Manzano yang dipecat Disember lalu, menjangkakan kredibilitinya akan diuji oleh Athletic biarpun pasukan lawan itu masih belum menikmati kejayaan besar di pentas Eropah.

“Mereka sebuah pasukan yang berkualiti, berani dan mengamalkan permainan bola sepak pantas. Pasukan seperti ini tidak gentar mempamerkan permainan tersendiri biarpun beraksi di gelanggang lawan,” kata Simeone.

“Mereka mempamerkan permainan seperti itu sepanjang musim. Saya tahu mereka akan tetap mempamerkan permainan sama tidak kira dalam aksi persahabatan atau final.” Selain membabitkan pertembungan sesama kelab Sepanyol, final itu juga bakal menyaksikan percaturan taktikal antara Simeone dengan bekas jurulatihnya, Marcelo Bielsa.

Dan ketika Simeone menyuarakan rasa kagum dengan kehebatan rakan sejawatnya dari Argentina itu, beliau percaya sumbangan mereka agak terhad dengan menyatakan: “Pemain-pemain yang akan beraksi, kami hanya berada di luar padang.” “Pada perlawanan seperti ini, siapa yang pernah merasai pengalaman sebelum ini tahu apa yang akan berlaku tapi ia tidak memberi jaminan anda akan menang,” tambahnya.

Cardiff City tukar warna jersi kepada merah

LONDON 9 Mei - Pemilik kelab bola sepak Cardiff City menimbulkan kemarahan di kalangan peminatnya apabila bercadang untuk menukar jersi kelab itu daripada warna biru kepada merah.

Harapan Cardiff - yang terkenal dengan gelaran "Bluebird" (burung layang-layang) dengan jersi biru sebagai ikon - untuk bermain di Liga Perdana Inggeris musnah selepas tewas kepada West Ham pada perlawanan separuh akhir kedua "play-off" semalam.

Pemilik kelab, Tan Sri Vincent Tan, seorang konglomerat dari Malaysia bercadang untuk menukar jersi kelab tersebut kepada warna merah kerana percaya ia membawa nasib lebih baik, lapor akhbar The Sun.

Sehubungan dengan itu, kelab itu dicadang menggantikan simbol burung layang-layang pada logo dengan naga, iaitu sama pada bendera kebangsaan Wales yang turut membawa makna berkuasa, kuat dan bernasib baik dalam budaya masyarakat Cina.

BBC memetik jurucakap kumpulan penyokong Cardiff City sebagai berkata, keputusan untuk menukar warna dan lencana sudah pun dilakukan.

Europa League trophy goes to Madrid

Atletico Madrid have regained the Europa League after thrashing another Spanish La Liga representatives Athletic Bilbao 3-0 in the finals match in Bucharest, Romania.

­Madrid needed just seven minutes to take the lead as Falcao found the top corner of Gorka Iraizoz’s goal with a stunning curveball, 1-0.

But the Spanish capital's side then gave the initiative away to their opponents and began looking for chances for counter attack.  

But Athletic had only themselves to blame for the second goal, which they conceded on the 34th minute.

The Basques carelessly gave the ball away not far from their box, allowing Arda Turan to find Falcao in front of goal. The Colombian turned around and sent the ball into the roof of the net, 2-0.

It was his twelfth goal of the competition, which saw Falcao become Europa League’s top scorer for the second year in a row. The 26-year-old got 17 goals last season as he led FC Porto to the title.

After the break, Bilbao kept dominating possession, but still couldn’t find the keys to Atletico's defense.

Madrid, on the contrary, managed to score again, with Diego settling the final score, 3-0.

Atletico have lifted their third major European trophy after their success in 1962 UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup and the UEFA Europa League win of 2010.
