Nazmi lands three-year Beira-Mar deal

Malaysian wonderkid Nazmi Faiz has signed a three-year deal with Portuguese Liga outfit Beira-Mar, the club have announced.

By ESPNSTAR.com staff

The 17-year-old, who was previously playing with Harimau Muda in the Great Eastern-YEO's S.League, had arrived in Portugal last Tuesday for a trial.

During his stay, he took part in training with the Beira-Mar first team and was also in action in a friendly against a second division side, and was said to have made a big impression.

And according to the club's official website, he has done enough to earn a three-year contract which will run until June 2015, although he will only become a Beira-Mar player officially in August after he turns 18.

"It's hard for me to describe my feelings," Nazmi said. "To play in Europe has long been my aim.

"This [the trial with Beira-Mar] was my best chance and I'm thankful I have succeeded.

"I'm extremely happy and excited and can't wait to start on my new adventure."

The precocious playmaker also spoke highly of the experience he has already gained on his short trial period.

"I feel in love with the club since I first stepped foot here," Nazmi added.

"I was treated very well and I will always hold on to the words and teachings of coach Ulisses Morales and captain Hugo."

Morales was quick to play down expectations but admitted the player has what it takes to succeed in Portugal.

"Nazmi is a young player with a lot of abilities, but he still has a long way to go," he said.

"This is only the beginning for him."

Nazmi will become the first Malaysian to ply his trade in Portugal.

Drogba Akan Tinggalkan Chelsea

Didier Drogba

AFP

QPR captain Barton given 12-match ban by FA

The midfielder is punished for kicking Sergio Aguero before allegedly attempting to headbutt Vincent Kompany in an explosive incident during the last game of the campaign
.

QPR captain Joey Barton has been issued a 12-match ban by the Football Association after being found guilty of two counts of violent conduct during the clash against Manchester City on the final day of the Premier League season.

Barton was handed an further eight-game ban to add to the four matches the midfielder would already miss for his second red card of the season, as well as a £75,000 fine.

Confrontations with Sergio Aguero and Vincent Kompany were cited, but as they occurred after the player was sent off it was seen as a separate offence to initial incident involving Carlos Tevez, with the later infractions falling outside of the referee's jurisdiction.

Although he was not punished for the alleged headbutt on Kompany, the Independent Regulatory Commission deemed that, by kneeing Aguero, he deserved a lengthy ban.

The chairman of the Independent Regulatory Commission spoke of why they saw it acceptable to hand Barton the punishment: "There are rules of conduct that should be adhered to, and such behaviour tarnishes the image of football in this country, particularly as this match was the pinnacle of the domestic season and watched by millions around the globe."

League Cup to be named the Capital One Cup from next season

The Football League have agreed a new four-year sponsorship deal with the financial services company to rebrand England's secondary domestic cup competition
.

The League Cup is to be rebranded as the Capital One Cup from next season after the Football League agreed a four-year sponsorship deal with the financial services company.

Football League chief commercial officer Richard Heaselgrave said: "This is terrific news for clubs and a great way to conclude the season."

The competition has been sponsored by various companies over the years, including Coca-Cola, Worthington's and Carling – a brand of parent brewing company Molson Coors. The tournament has been known as the Carling Cup since 2003.

The competition is widely seen as a lesser title than the more storied FA Cup, but has been used by many Premier League clubs in recent years as a method of handing young prospects valuable first-team experience.

Heaselgrave added: “The Capital One Cup is in great shape having been re-invigorated in recent seasons by a number of memorable finals, some thrilling midweek cup football and a first glimpse of the stars of the future.”

Kenny Dalglish led his Liverpool side to the 2011-12 League Cup, overcoming Cardiff City on penalties at Wembley in February.

Redknapp Dipecat Sebagai Pengurus Tottenham

Harry Redknapp

One of Singh's tasks will be to act as a go-between for the Venky's and Steve Kean, although the manager's future remains uncertain after relegation from the Barclays Premier League.

Singh is unlikely to be short of things to say, having earned a reputation for his forthright views about the Premier League while working as a pundit for Asian TV.

Premier League Team of the Week- week 3

Robin van Persie and Santi Cazorla added their names to our Premier League Team of the Week with productive performances on Sunday. Find out who else made the cut.
By Marcus Chhan

This week we've gone with a 4-4-2 formation with Tottenham goalkeeper Brad Friedel our last line of defence.
In midfield, we have a collection of players from Arsenal, Manchester City, Norwich and Southampton.
Leading the line we have Robin van Persie and Steven Fletcher while there is also a special mention for an unsung Arsenal hero.

GK: Brad Friedel (Tottenham)

There is something so impressive about an athlete who takes up a challenge head-on rather than sulking about it to the media. That's exactly what Brad Friedel did on Saturday. A day after finding out that Tottenham had shelled out almost £12 million on a new goalkeeper in Hugo Lloris, the 41-year-old shot-stopper single-handedly preserved a point for his under-pressure manager against Norwich.
Friedel made several fantastic saves during Spurs' 1-1 draw with the Canaries but none were better than his one handed stop to deny Robert Snodgrass. He also denied Norwich's Bradley Johnson from scoring a stoppage time winner. Top quality stuff.

RB: Pablo Zabaleta (Manchester City)

Pablo Zabaleta has done really well to establish himself as Roberto Mancini's preferred right-back ahead of stiff competition from Micah Richards. The transfer deadline day arrival of Maicon has added more pressure for Zabaleta to perform and he showed no signs of cracking under the strain during Manchester City's 3-1 win over QPR on Saturday.

He was very effective for City when he made the overlapping run and was unlucky not to have scored in the match after his curling shot beat the QPR keeper but not the underside of the bar.

LB: Liam Ridgewell (West Brom)

West Brom sprang a bit of a surprise when they defeated Everton 2-0 over the weekend. The Toffees, fresh off wins against Manchester United and Aston Villa, struggled to deal with Baggies defender Liam Ridgewell on both ends of the pitch.

In defence, Ridgewell was solid. Further up the pitch in attack, he was also impressive. The key thing about this performance, though, was that he picked the times to venture forward perfectly which so many of today's full-backs fail to do.

CB: Thomas Vermaelen (Arsenal)

Not too many centre-backs can say they got the better of Luis Suarez after a game with Liverpool. The tricky Uruguayan is a nightmare to mark simply because of his ability on-the-ball. However, Arsenal's Thomas Vermaelen pretty much cancelled out the threat of Suarez during his team's 2-0 win over the Reds on Sunday.

Here's an Opta Stat to consider as well: Arsenal have kept a clean sheet in their opening three league games for the first time since 1924/25.

CB: Ciaran Clark (Aston Villa)

Aston Villa are work-in-progress team under new manager Paul Lambert and many were expecting an exciting Newcastle side with the strike pairing of Papiss Cisse and Demba Ba to get all three points against the Villains on Sunday.

Somebody forgot to tell Ciaran Clark all that. The Villa defender did a fine job of keeping Cisse and Ba fairly quiet while popping up with a goal himself to earn the 1-1 draw for the visitors.

RM: Robert Snodgrass (Norwich)

For those who may have missed Norwich's 1-1 draw with Tottenham at White Hart Lane on Saturday, let me first tell you that winger Robert Snodgrass put in one of the performances of the weekend in the Barclays Premier League.

If it wasn't for Spurs goalkeeper Brad Friedel, Norwich would have comfortably beaten the home side such was their dominance in attack led by the brilliant Snodgrass. It was fitting that when Friedel eventually was beaten in the 85th minute, Snodgrass was the man who did it - the former Leeds man smashing home the equalising goal through a crowded penalty box.

LM: Santi Cazorla (Arsenal)

New Arsenal signing Santi Cazorla was the main difference for the Gunners as they beat Liverpool 2-0 on Sunday. While Liverpool's midfield was error prone and impotent in the final third, Cazorla was making things happen for the Gunners.

The Spain international set-up Lukas Podolski for Arsenal's opener and helped himself to the second goal with a powerful low shot to seal the win. A new fan favourite has arrived at the Emirates.

CM: Yaya Toure (Manchester City)

With the number of central midfielders Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini has at his disposal you would've thought that this position must be a real problem for the defending champions. Not so. Not with Yaya Toure in the team.

The Ivorian was again indispensable for City as they eased to a 3-1 win over QPR on Saturday. It's becoming a trend these days in the Barclays Premier League that whenever things a little tight for City and they need someone to break the game open, Toure answers the call.

CM: Adam Lallana (Southampton)

In a game that featured the likes of Manchester United midfielders Shinji Kagawa and Michael Carrick, it was Southampton skipper Adam Lallana who shone the brightest in the centre of the park. The Saints eventually succumbed to a 3-2 defeat to United but while Lallana was on the pitch, the newly-promoted side were easily better than Sir Alex Ferguson's million dollar squad.

ST: Robin van Persie (Manchester United)

Robin van Persie is a relieved man this Monday. After his poor attempt at a penalty was saved with United trailing Southampton 2-1, the Alex Ferguson hairdryer must have been warming up in the dressing room.

Fortunately for Van Persie, he kept his cool and added a late brace to the earlier goal he had scored to complete his hat-trick and get United over the line 3-2 past the Saints.
His third goal was particularly good given the tense nature of the final minutes of the match as he showed excellent athleticism to nod Nani's cross into the back of the net.

According to our friends at Opta, Van Persie has scored 52 Premier League goals since January 1 2011 - only 10 fewer than Stoke City in the same period.

ST: Steven Fletcher (Sunderland)

Many pundits thought Martin O'Neill had lost his marbles after he spent £15 million on Wolves striker Steven Fletcher. The critics might have to start singing a different tune if Fletcher can keep his performances up to the level he produced on the weekend. Fletcher scored two goals in Sunderland's 2-2 draw against the in-form Swansea.

Special Mention: Abou Diaby (Arsenal)

Arsenal's Abou Diaby deserves a mention in our Team of the Week for a very effective shift against Liverpool in midfield. It wasn't spectacular but it was thoroughly professional and it allowed Arsenal's more creative players like Santi Cazorla to shine and more importantly helped the Gunners to a 2-0 win over their rival.

City, Arsenal, Real held; Malaga, Porto through

Malaga and Porto became the first teams to progress through to the last 16 of the Champions League while Manchester City slipped closer to exiting the tournament.

Both Malaga and Porto boasted 100% records from their opening three games, and although neither side were able to win tonight, respective away draws against AC Milan and Dynamo Kiev were enough to secure top-two berths for both clubs.

Group C pacesetters Malaga took the lead at the San Siro through Eliseu's 40th-minute goal but were pegged back by Alexandre Pato's 73rd-minute effort - the Brazilian's first Milan goal since last December and the first the Spanish side had conceded in the Champions League.

Also in Group C, Anderlecht moved into third place, a point behind Milan, with a 1-0 home win over Zenit St Petersburg, Dieumerci Mbokani scoring the only goal in the 17th minute.

Porto, meanwhile, moved on to 10 points in Group A following a goalless draw away to Dynamo Kiev.
The Portuguese outfit look set to be joined in the last 16 by Paris St Germain, who remained just one point behind following a Zlatan Ibrahimovic-inspired 4-0 thrashing of Dinamo Zagreb.
Ibrahimovic did not manage to get on the scoresheet but was involved in all four goals scored by Alex, Blaise Matuidi, Jeremy Menez and Guillaume Hoarau as PSG moved five points clear of third-placed Kiev with two games remaining.

Both matches in Group D - undoubtedly the toughest pool in the competition - finished in 2-2 draws, leaving big-spending Manchester City all but out of contention for a place in the knockout stages.

City were left with a mountain to climb after two Siem De Jong goals saw them trailing 2-0 at home to Ajax after just 17 minutes.
Roberto Mancini's side managed to get back on terms thanks to goals from Yaya Toure (22) and Sergio Aguero (74) but despite a late onslaught they could not snatch a winner.

City now have just two points from their four games, leaving them two points behind Ajax, five adrift of second-placed Real Madrid and six behind leaders Borussia Dortmund.

Dortmund and Madrid shared the points at the Bernabeu with the Spanish giants twice fighting back from deficits thanks to Pepe (34) and Germany international Mesut Ozil (89). Dortmund had taken the lead through goals from Marco Reus (28) and an own goal from Alvaro Arbeloa (45).

In Group B, Schalke also battled back from 2-0 down to salvage a point at home to Arsenal and remain one point clear of the Gunners at the summit.
Goals from Theo Walcott and Olivier Giroud gave Arsenal a 2-0 lead but Klaas Jan Huntelaar halved the deficit just before the break and Jefferson Farfan's 67th-minute equaliser earned Schalke the draw.

Closing the gap on the top two were Olympiacos, who moved onto six points - one behind Arsenal - after claiming a second successive victory over Montpellier.

After earning a stoppage-time win in France a fortnight ago, Olympiacos again left it late before snatching victory tonight with two goals in the last 10 minutes from Leandro Greco and Kostas Mitroglou.

Those strikes came after Younes Belhanda's second-half penalty for Montpellier had cancelled out Paulo Machado's early opener for the the Greek side.

While Malaga and Porto earned their spots in the knockout stages, tonight's defeats for Montpellier and Dinamo Zagreb mean neither of those sides can now reach the last 16.

Montpelier are five points adrift at the bottom of Group B while Zagreb have no goals and no points from four games in Group A.

Tuesday's Champions League Results
Grp A
Dynamo Kiev 0-0 Porto
PSG 4-0 Dinamo Zagreb

Grp B

Olympiacos 3-1 Montpellier

Grp C

Chelsea, Man United win; Barca stunned

Victor Moses headed a dramatic injury-time winner for Chelsea against Shakhtar Donetsk to lift the reigning champions to the top of UEFA Champions League Group E.

Roberto Di Matteo's men looked like being forced to settle for a draw but Moses' winner from a corner was enough to give them a 3-2 win and send them above their Ukrainian opponents on goal difference.
Fernando Torres had given Chelsea a dream start after just six minutes but their lead lasted just three minutes before Willian equalised. Oscar put Chelsea back on front on 40 before Willian grabbed his second early in the second half.
Moses' winner could prove vital for Chelsea after Juventus kept the destiny of the group wide open with a comfortable 4-0 win over Norwegian side Nordsjaelland in Turin.

Juve, who now sit a point behind the top two, were never troubled with Claudio Marchisio opening the scoring after six minutes and further goals added by Arturo Vidal, Sebastian Giovinco and Fabio Quagliarella.

Chelsea's Barclays Premier League rivals Manchester United staged a late comeback to beat Braga 3-1 in Portugal and guarantee progression to the knockout stages from Group H.

United looked to be heading for an embarrassing defeat after Alan slotted home a 49th-minute penalty for the hosts after Johnny Evans was ruled to have fouled Custodio.
But Robin van Persie took advantage of a goalkeeping howler to equalise with 10 minutes to go, Wayne Rooney put United in front from the penalty spot four minutes later and Javier Hernandez netted a third in injury time.

Galatasaray's 3-1 win over Cluj in Romania guaranteed United's progression as group winners. Burak Yilmaz scored a hat-trick for the visitors with Modou Sougou replying for Cluj, with the two sides now tied in second place on four points.

Neil Lennon's Celtic pulled off one of the greatest wins in their history to beat Barcelona 2-1 at Celtic Park and give themselves an excellent chance of reaching the knockout stages.

Victor Wanyama headed a 21st-minute opener for the hosts, for whom goalkeeper Fraser Forster was in excellent form, pulling off a series of superb saves to keep Celtic's lead intact.

With Barca pressing forward, 18-year-old substitute Tony Watt broke away to increase Celtic's lead in the 83rd minute before Lionel Messi grabbed a consolation for Barca in injury time.

There was even better news to come for Celtic as Benfica beat Spartak Moscow 2-0 in Portugal to leave the Scottish champions three points clear in second place.

Oscar Cardozo's second-half double was enough to provide Benfica with their first group stage win, while Spartak's slim hopes ended after having Nicolas Pareja sent off in the 76th minute.

Bayern Munich brushed aside pointless Lille 6-1 at the Allianz Arena to open up Group F, with Claudio Pizarro leading the rout with a first-half hat-trick.

Bastian Schweinsteiger had set Bayern on their way with a sixth minute opener and further goals were added by Arjen Robben and Toni Kroos, while Salomon Kalou replied for the French side.
Valencia joined Bayern on nine points with a 4-2 home win over BATE Borisov. Two goals from Sofiane Feghouli and one each for Jonas and Roberto Soldado saw off the Ukrainians, for whom Renan Bressnan and Dmitri Mozolevski got on the scoresheet.

Juve down Chelsea; Barca go through

Substitute Sebastian Giovinco sealed a 3-0 win for Juventus over Chelsea in Turin to leave the Londoners' defence of their Champions League title hanging by a thread.

Chelsea's defeat means they must beat minnows Nordsjaelland in their final group game at Stamford Bridge next month and hope already-qualified Shakhtar Donetsk see off Juventus in Ukraine.

Roberto Di Matteo's men fell behind when Andrea Pirlo's shot was deflected home by Fabio Quagliarella in the 38th minute, and Arturo Vidal side-footed home another deflected effort to make it 2-0 on the hour.

Giovinco's injury-time third added to Chelsea's woe and they now face the prospect of being the first defending champions to exit in the group stage after Shakhtar moved into the last 16 with a 5-2 win against Nordsjaelland.

The home side twice took the lead through Morten Nordstrand and Kasper Lorentzen but Shakhtar were quick to equalise and ultimately eased to victory through a Luiz Adriano hat-trick and two from Willian early in the second half.
However, Adriano's achievement was marred by the manner of his first goal.
The visitors were returning the ball to their opponents following a break for injury, but Adriano had failed to read the script and ran onto the ball with the home defence static and rounded the goalkeeper to score.

Barcelona shrugged off their shock loss to Celtic to guarantee their progress as winners of Group G with a 3-0 stroll over Spartak Moscow in Russia.
Lionel Messi set up Dani Alves for a 16th-minute opener before scoring himself, poking home a rebound after a shot by Andres Iniesta was blocked. Messi made it 3-0 before the break.

Celtic still have a good chance of joining Barcelona in the last 16 despite slipping to a 2-1 defeat to Benfica in Portugal.
Ezequiel Garay struck a 71st-minute winner for the hosts after Celtic's Giorgios Samaras had cancelled out Ola John's seventh-minute opener.

With the two sides now locked on seven points, Celtic must get a better result than their rivals in the last series of group games, with the Scots at home to already-eliminated Spartak and Benfica travelling to the Nou Camp.

Bayern Munich and Valencia played out the 1-1 draw they needed to guarantee their progress from Group F, Sofiane Feghouli's 77th-minute opener for the Spaniards cancelled out five minutes later by Thomas Muller.

The two sides had been all but certain of qualification following BATE Borisov's earlier 2-0 home defeat to Lille, who got their first points in the group through goals from Djibril Sidibe and Gianni Bruno.

Galatasaray's 1-0 win over Group H winners Manchester United leaves them neck and neck with Romanians Cluj going into next month's final round of matches after Cluj beat Sporting Braga 3-1.

Burak Yilmaz grabbed a potentially crucial 54th-minute winner for the Turks, while Rui Pedro hit a first-half hat-trick for Cluj. Alan replied for the Portuguese side, who saw their slim hopes ended with their defeat.

Tuesday's Champions League Results

Group E
Juventus 3-0 Chelsea
Nordsjaelland 2-5 Shakhtar Donetsk

Group F
Valencia 1-1 Bayern Munich

City crash out, Arsenal ease through

Sergio Aguero's late penalty was not enough to prevent Manchester City being eliminated from the Champions League after a 1-1 draw to Real Madrid.

Roberto Mancini's men needed a win to stand any chance of going into the final round of Group D fixtures with a qualifying place to play for, but fell behind to Karim Benzema's 10th-minute strike.
City rallied to equalise in the 73rd minute when Aguero slotted home from the spot after Alvaro Arbeloa's foul on the striker earned him a red card, but City could not make their numerical advantage pay and slid out of the competition.

Meanwhile Borussia Dortmund guaranteed progression as Group D winners with Robert Lewandowski scoring twice in a 4-1 thrashing of Ajax at the Amsterdam ArenA.

Marco Reus, Mario Gotze and Lewandowski put the in-form Germans out of sight by half-time, and after Lewandowski had added his second of the night, Danny Hoesen grabbed a consolation for the home side with four minutes left.
Porto and Paris St Germain will play off in Paris next month to determine the winners of Group A after both sides underlined their progression to the knockout stages with easy wins on Wednesday.

Porto remain a point clear at the top of the group after a 3-0 home win over pointless Dinamo Zagreb, Lucho Gonzalez putting them ahead in the 20th minute before second-half strikes from Joao Moutinho and Silvestre Varela.

And the French side also rubber-stamped their qualification with a 2-0 win over Dynamo Kiev in Ukraine, with Ezequiel Lavezzi opening the scoring on the stroke of half-time and adding a second soon after the break.

Christian Fuchs scored the only goal of the game in the 77th minute as Schalke 04 beat Olympiakos to ensure qualification from Group B and give them a one-point advantage over second-placed Arsenal.

The Gunners also made sure they will join Schalke in the last 16 after putting their recent unpredictable form behind them with a 2-0 win over Montpellier. Jack Wilshere and Lukas Podolski scored in the second half.

Malaga went through as Group C winners despite blowing an early 2-0 lead to draw 2-2 with Zenit St Petersburg in Russia. Diego Buonanotte and Sebastian Fernandez put the Spaniards in front with just nine minutes gone, before Danny and Viktor Fayzulin rescued a point.

Milan's 3-1 win at Anderlecht meant they will join Malaga in the knockout stages. Stephan El Shaarawy put Milan in front before Bram Nuytinck was sent off for the Belgians. Philippe Mexes added a second, Tom De Sutter reduced the deficit for the hosts but Alexandre Pato made it three in injury time.

Wednesday's Champions League Results

City crash out; BVB, PSG, Real cruise

Manchester City crashed out of the European football this season without a win to their name after a 1-0 loss to Dortmund while Real
Ezequiel Lavezzi struck a 61st minute winner as Paris St Germain edged past Porto to emerge as winners of UEFA Champions League Group A with a 2-1 victory in the French capital.

Knowing only a win would be good enough to claim top spot at the expense of their rivals, Carlo Ancelotti's men started well with Thiago Silva firing them in front just before the half-hour mark.

Jackson Martinez equalised three minutes later for the visitors but Lavezzi's effort guaranteed Paris would top the group on 15 points, with the Portuguese side joining them in the knockout stages two points behind.

In a match temporarily suspended due to snow, Dinamo Zagreb claimed their first and only point in the group when Ivan Krstanovic hit an injury time penalty to draw 1-1 at home to Dynamo Kiev, who had taken the lead through Andriy Yarmolenko.

Arsenal failed to capitalise on Schalke's surprise draw at already-eliminated Montpellier, with the Gunners' 2-1 defeat at Olympiakos forcing them to settle for the runners-up spot behind the Germans in Group B.

Thomas Rosicky promised Arsene Wenger some respite from his side's dismal domestic form when he put the Gunners in front on 38 minutes, but second half strikes from Giannis Maniatis and Kostas Mitroglou sealed the Greek side's win.
Victory for Arsenal would have seen them clinch top spot after Schalke were held in France. Benedikt Howedes put the visitors in front after 56 minutes but Emanuel Herrera equalised for Montpellier just three minutes later.

In Group C, a 35th minute goal by Danny gave Zenit St Petersburg a surprise 1-0 win over runners-up Milan in the San Siro and guaranteed the Russians the consolation prize of a Europa League berth.

Group winners Malaga eased to a 2-2 home draw with Anderlecht with two goals from Duda, with the Belgians - whose hopes of third place were extinguished by Zenit's win - twice equalising through Milan Jovanovic and Dieumerci Mbokani.

Manchester City ended a dismal campaign rock-bottom of Group D after a 1-0 defeat at Borussia Dortmund, who made sure they would go through as group winners with a 57th minute winner from Julian Schieber.

Real Madrid had to settle for second place despite a 4-1 win over Ajax. Jose Callejon scored twice and was joined on the scoresheet by Cristiano Ronaldo and Kaka, while Derk Boerrigter replied for Ajax, who head for the Europa League.

Juve, Celtic progress; Chelsea crash out

An own goal saw Juventus go through to the knockout stages of the Champions League as Group E winners as they edged out Shakhtar Donetsk 1-0 in Ukraine.

Olexander Kucher inadvertently turned Stephan Lichtsteiner's cross into his own net in the 56th minute, seeing Juve leapfrog Shakhtar at the top and rendering Chelsea's 6-1 thrashing of FC Nordsjaelland meaningless.

Both teams struck the post but Juventus could just about claim to be worthy winners as they had the better of the chances and ensured most of the game was played in Shakhtar territory.

The result meant that Chelsea became the first Champions League holders to crash out of the competition before Christmas, killing any party at Stamford Bridge, where Rafael Benitez claimed his first win in charge of Chelsea and Fernando Torres scored twice.
A bizarre first half saw both sides miss penalties before David Luiz nailed the third spot-kick - all given for handball - in the space of seven minutes to put Chelsea in front.

Torres added a second before Joshua John pulled one back, but goals from Gary Cahill, Torres again, Juan Mata and substitute Oscar saw Chelsea cruise.

Kris Commons' dramatic late penalty gave Celtic a 2-1 victory over Spartak Moscow at Parkhead and secured the Hoops a place in the last 16.

Striker Gary Hooper opened the scoring in the 21st minute when he capitalised on a mistake by Spartak defender Juan Insaurralde, but that lead was cancelled out in the 39th minute by Ari, after good work by the impressive Emmanuel Emenike.

But the Scottish champions were not to be denied and, after defender Marek Suchy conceded a penalty in the 80th minute for a clumsy barge on Georgios Samaras, up stepped Commons to slam the ball in off the bar.
Kim Kallstrom was shown a late red card for a clumsy challenge on Commons, his second bookable offence.

There was then a nervous wait at the finish as Celtic, who needed to better Benfica's result to progress from Group G, listened for news from the Portuguese side's goalless draw at Barcelona.
With no goals, the major incident at the Nou Camp was an injury to Lionel Messi, who was taken off on a cart after appearing as a second-half substitute, leaving Barca to finish with 10 men.

Bayern Munich sealed top spot in Group F as they coasted to a 4-1 victory over BATE Borisov at the Allianz Arena.

BATE never threatened a repeat of their 3-1 upset earlier in the competition as a much-changed Bayern side did more than enough to ensure they will avoid the likes of Barcelona and Manchester United in the next round.

Mario Gomez, one of seven changes, opened the scoring on 21 minutes before Thomas Muller and Xherdan Shaqiri netted shortly after half-time to ensure a nerveless second period.

Substitute David Alaba completed the rout with seven minutes remaining before Egor Filipenko grabbed a BATE consolation.
By then, both sides had been reduced to 10 men with Bayern's Jerome Boateng seeing red for a poor challenge on Artem Kontsevoy in the 51st minute and Denis Polyakov following 18 minutes later for a second bookable offence.

The win saw Bayern pip Valencia to top spot, despite the Spaniards winning 1-0 in Lille thanks to a 37th-minute penalty from Oliveira Jonas after Marko Basa had impeded him.

In Group G, CFR Cluj took a 1-0 win over Manchester United courtesy of Luis Alberto's wonder goal, but were denied second place as Galatasaray came back to beat Braga 2-1.
Marcio Mossoro's curling shot gave Braga a first-half lead, but Burak Yilmaz and namesake Aydin struck in the second half to turn it around.

Wednesday's Champions League Results

Chelsea 6-1 Nordsjaelland
Shakhtar Donetsk 0-1 Juventus
Bayern Munich 4-1 BATE Borisov
Lille 0-1 Valencia
Celtic 2-1 Spartak Moscow
Barcelona 0-0 Benfica
Braga 1-2 Galatasaray
Man United 0-1 Cluj
