MALAYSIA TO HOST 2013 ASIA CUP

Malaysia is set to play host for the 2013 Asia Cup that offers a berth to the 2014 World Cup.

The decision to award the host job to Malaysia was taken at the Asian Hockey Federation Council meeting chaired by HRH Sultan Azlan Shah at Ipoh this morning.

Initially the hosting job was awarded to Singapore but it was changed at the meeting today.

We have decided to award the host job to Malaysia and I am happy to announce that it will be held in Ipoh next year, said AHF President Sultan Azlan Shah.

The dates have yet to be determind as we will also have to take into consideration the annual Azlan Shah Cup.

Malaysia last played in the World Cup in 2002 when they hosted the event. Prior to that Malaysia qualified for the 1998 Utrecht World Cup after a hiatus of 16 years with their previous appearance being in 1982 in Bombay.

Sultan Azlan was met after officiating the cerificate presentation ceremony for the Technical Officials course conducted jointly by the AHF-MHC.

At the ceremony it was also announced that the AHF-MHC Academy will now be known as the Raja Dato Seri Ashaman Academy, in honour of the second son of Sultan Azlan Shah who passed away on March 30 this year.

Sultan Azlan Shah also commented on the performance of the Malaysian team at the tournament.

I am not happy with the performance as we concede easy goals, especially in the match against New Zealand, said Sultan Azlan.

We need to work on our defence as it leaks easily. But I must say I am pleased with the performance of the young players in the team as they have put up a decent performance.

This should form the team of the future for Malaysia and we have to give them the necessary exposure.

Physical built?

Kita tidak perlu terikut-ikut cara ummah caucasian bermain...

Sebenarnya, taktikal yg tepat + speed + drbbling skill sudah cukup nak tewaskan skuad ummah caucasian ni..

Kalau Dharma Raj / Stephen Van Huizen / coach luar train, insya-Allah kita mampu..

Setakat ni, kita dok bersaing dgn tiga negara Asia.. Apa-apa pun kita harapkan yg terbaik..

Btul tak sis anya?

penting juga ada physical built up itu SB... kak anya baru tengok news tentang bebudak bola yang practise kat australia nih... to compare, mereka pentingkan pemakanan even from the young age.... to build up the physical... maksud dia bila ada body contact, susah nak jatuh...but then, the most important element is the skill of course... coaches can come up with tactical planning yang superb... but without players with skills to carry it out.... it just wont happen....

Aussie coach says Malaysia must have a transition planBy AFTAR SINGH IPOH: Malaysia need to start investing in their junior players if they want to be serious contenders in international hockey.
This is the opinion of India coach Michael Nobbs, who said that despite having good players, Malaysia were underachievers as they tend to hold on to the older players longer than necessary.
The lack of a gradual transition process is the reason for their failure to make an impact. There must be a constant infusion of young blood in a team, said the Australian. Time to celebrate: The India hockey players having a good time dancing with performers on stage during the 21st Sultan Azlan Shah Cup dinner at Lost World of Tambun, Ipoh.

The veteran players in the national team are goalkeeper Roslan Jamaluddin, defender Mohd Amin Rahim, midfielder Azlan Misron and forward Hafifihafiz Hanafi.
The 34-year-old Roslan did not play a single match in the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup while Mohd Rahim made costly blunders in defence. Hafifihafiz was easily the worst performer in the team and clearly did not justify his selection.
Malaysia have a good set of young players and they proved it by winning the Junior Asia Cup in Malacca last month, he said.
They should be given more exposure in tournaments as they are the future. Those who featured in Ipoh did well.
Nobbs said the Malaysian juniors should play in more international matches if they hope to qualify for the 2014 World Cup in Holland.
These players should be given utmost priority from now on. Playing more matches will be good preparation for the Junior World Cup in New Delhi next year, said Nobbs, who took over as India coach eight months ago.
In that period he has guided India to the London Olympics and a 3-1 win over world No. 4 Britain for third place in the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup

AHF name eight teams for Asia Cup

KUALA LUMPUR: Eight teams will square off for the right to earn a spot in the 2014 World Cup when Malaysia hosts the Asia Cup in Ipoh from Aug 24-Sept 1.
The Asian Hockey Federation (AHF) yesterday named the eight teams vying for the lone spot as the Asian continental champions.
Besides Malaysia, the other teams are 2010 Asian Games gold medallists Pakistan, South Korea, India, China, Japan, Bangladesh and Oman.
However, Malaysia, South Korea, Pakistan and India have a chance to clinch their World Cup ticket via the World League semi-finals.
Malaysia, South Korea and Pakistan are in the same group in the World League semi-finals. If all three finish in the top four of the tournament in Johor in June, then they will secure an automatic berth without having to worry about the Asia Cup.
India play in Round Two of the World League and are expected to make the cut for the semi-finals. There is a major likelihood that they will play in the semi-finals to be hosted by Holland in June.
AHF secretary general Tan Sri P. Alagendra said that the format and groupings would be decided later.
The two groups of four teams each will play in the Asia Cup and the groupings will be released after March, when all eight teams have confirmed their entries, he said after chairing the 62nd meeting of the AHF Council.

Hoki Piala Asia: Malaysia hadapi tugas berat

2 Februari 2013

Sekiranya keputusan dibuat berdasarkan ranking semasa, bermakna  Kumpulan A bakal membariskan Pakistan, Malaysia, Jepun dan Oman.

Sasar juara Piala Asia: Nur Azmi

AYUH! KITA MARA UTK CHUA BOON HUAT!
Sukhairi Thani

WE'LL DO IT FOR BOON HUAT!
Story and pictures by Allan Netto

...  WINNING the Asia Cup will be the best thing Malaysia can do for the late Chua Boon Huat, who was killed in a car accident two days ago. The Asia Cup started in 1982 and Malaysias best achievement was third in 2007 under Sarjit Singh.

National manager George Koshy said: The best thing the player can do is win the Asia Cup for Chua. After the tragic accident on Thursday morning, Paul Revington put the hard times aside and dragged his troops to training last night.

However, the loss of such a notable player was clear, as the players paid tribute to the 33 year-old striker before they began their training session last night by placing a wreath and their hockey sticks at the bench where Boon Huat used to sit.

They also observed a minutes silence. The national squad observing a minutes silence before yesterdays training. It will take some time for them to get over it, but the faster we do it the better it will be for us, said George.

We need to compose ourselves, get the players on the pitch and keep their focus on the game.

The Asia Cup from Aug 24-Sept 1 will see Malaysia in Group A with Pakistan, Japan and China, while in Group B are defending champions South Korea, India, Oman and Bangladesh. Only the champions of the Asia Cup will make the cut for the World Cup, however Malaysia can still sneak in through the back door as their fifth place finish at the recent World League Semifinals in Johor could still earn them a ticket C depending on the results of the continental championships.

They know how serious the Asia Cup is. The goal is to qualify for the World Cup. If we can work towards winning it and dedicating it to Chua, it will be something he will be proud of, added George.

Revington says squad must stick together to recover from tragedy

KUALA LUMPUR: The national hockey players and officials are still shattered and shocked over the death of Chua Boon Huat.

The 33-year-old forward, the most capped player in the national team, died in a car accident along the Damansara-Puchong Highway at 3am on Thursday.

National coach Paul Revington said that the players had a gym training in Bukit Jalil yesterday morning and they were all absolutely still in shock.

We need to go through this together, said the South African coach.

The players had a light training session at the National Hockey Stadium in Bukit Jalil after breaking fast earlier in the day.

Revington said that all the players would attend Boon Huats funeral in Malacca on Monday.

The 25 players in the training squad are preparing for the Asia Cup in Ipoh from Aug 24-Sept 1.

Eight teams will feature in the tournament. Malaysia are in Group A with Pakistan, Japan and Taiwan while defending champions South Korea, India, Bangladesh and Oman are in Group B.

Malaysia must win to seal a place in next years World Cup in The Hague, Holland.

National assistant coach S. Arul Selvaraj, who broke down at the University Hospital mortuary on Thursday, said that goalkeeper Roslan Jamaluddin was most affected by Boon Huats death.

Roslan and Boon Huat were good buddies as they played together for Malaysia in the 1998 Kuala Lumpur Commonwealth Games and won the silver medal, said Arul.

Roslan just couldnt believe that Boon Huat is dead ... he is still in a state of shock.

Arul said that he would discuss with Revington whether to call up another player.

We only have three more weeks to prepare for the Asia Cup and will start our normal training tomorrow, he said.

We may train on Sunday as the players will take a break on Monday to attend the funeral.

Barisan terkuat hoki ke Piala Asia
Oleh ZAZALI JAMIAN

Paul Revington

Jurulatih skuad kebangsaan, Paul Revington berkata, motivasi dalam kalangan  pemain kini semakin bagus terutama selepas menghadiri majlis penghormatan  terakhir mendiang kelmarin.

Penjaga gol - S. Kumar, Roslan Jamaluddin.

Jadi buat masa sekarang kita hanya mengadakan sesi latihan seperti biasa,"
katanya

ASIA CUP: Coach wants Malaysia to win and qualify for World Cup on merit

WITH an eye on next years World Cup, Malaysia, who have not featured in the big event since 2002, want to qualify for it on merit by winning the Asia Cup scheduled for Aug 24-Sept 1 in Ipoh.

However, Malaysia, who finished fifth in the World League Semi-Finals in July, may not need to win the tournament if any of the already qualified teams win their respective continental competitions.

Malaysia are drawn in Group A with Pakistan, Japan and Taiwan while former world champions India, South Korea, Bangladesh and Oman make up Group B. Only the champions qualify for the World Cup.

In his fifth assignment as national coach, South African Paul Revington hopes his team will make an impact on the Asia Cup.

The target is to win the Asia Cup and qualify for the World Cup, not wait for other continental championships to decide our fate, said Revington recently.

Under Revington, Malaysia finished a respectable fourth in the Champions Challenge I event and third in the Asian Champions Trophy, both last year.

The coach used mix-and-match squads and tested different strategies in those tournaments.

Malaysia then finished second in the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup and fifth in the World League Semi-Finals, both this year.

In the Asia Cup, Malaysia will open against Taiwan on Aug 24 before facing 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games gold medallists Pakistan the next day followed by Japan on Aug 27.

For the record, Malaysias best finish in the Asia Cup incepted in 1982 was a bronze medal in 2007 in Chennai, India. Other editions saw Malaysia finish fourth, or worse.

Pakistan and South Korea have been champions three times each while India have won the biennial event twice.

Revington has set a difficult but achievable target for his team in the Asia Cup.

Malaysias senior team have never won a gold medal at an international tournament, save for the Sea Games.

Revington has named 16 of his 18 players for the Asia Cup and they are now in Ipoh for centralised training.

Ahmad Kazamirul, Azreen Rizal, Jivan Mohan, Kairulnizam Ibrahim, Meor Azuan, Azammi Adabi, Ramadan Rosli and Norhizzat Sumantri will battle for the two vacant slots.

Revington also included four juniors Mohd Fitri Saari, Muhammad Firhan Ashaari, Mohammad Izad Hakimi Jamaluddin and Faiz Helmi Jali C for the Asia Cup.

I hope the players will bring the same drive and intensity they had during the Under-21 tournament last year, which Malaysia won, added Revington.

While South Korea and Malaysia are expected to qualify after the completion of other continental championships, the Asia Cup will be crucial for Pakistan and India, who have never missed a World Cup.

In front of their home crowd they (Malaysia Hockey Team) are formidable. They were also very keen to reverse the losing trend against us and as often happens you learn... more from losing than you do in winning"
South Africa vice-captain Rhett Halkett

"Malaysian's hockey trademark was fast and counter-attacking hockey"
South Africa Captain Austin Smith

"Malaysia? It's a speedy team!"

Malaysia have a mix of both European and Asian style of playing hockey, very strong during the early parts of the game but give away some easy goals. The speed of their forwards are a big threat to any defence"
coach of England, Bobby Crutchley

"They (Malaysian supporters) just keep supporting them (Malaysian hockey team). They really love their hockey team. They're supporting them superbly!"
FIH commentator

"Malaysian supporters are very passionate and vociferous. The hockey cowd here is different from the crowd Ive seen elsewhere in the world.
The crowd is a big boost to the Malaysians. They (Malaysian hockey fans) are also very patriotic. Any team that against Malaysia must not get distracted by what is happening in the stands.
