In the second photo are men of the Sikh Regiment of the British Indian Army. All of them are sitting in the traditional cross legged prayer position. They’re probably reciting their final prayers as this picture was being taken.The vast majority of Indian soldiers captured when Singapore fell were Sikhs. In the last picture you can see beards and long hair on the soldiers. The British found it in Japanese records when they retook Singapore.

Selknam natives en route to Europe for being exhibited as animals in Human Zoos, 1899

With the permission of the Chilean government in 1889, eleven Selk’nam natives including an 8-year-old were taken to Europe to be exhibited in Human Zoos. The Patagonian Indians were a rarity. Between 1878 and 1900, three groups of natives belonging to indigenous groups of Tehuelche, Selk’nam and Kawésqar were shipped to Europe to be exposed in Human Zoos. They were photographed, measured, weighted and required to act in public, many of them never return home.

1840s-1940s: First photographs of Jerusalem
These earliest pictures of Jerusalem were taken ​​in 1844 by French photographer and draughtsman Joseph-Philibert Girault de Prangey (1804 – 1892), who was active in the Middle East.

In 1844, Jerusalem was a small town with a population of 15 thousand people on the outskirts of the Ottoman Empire.

Remarkably, his photographs were only discovered in the 1920s in a storeroom of his estate and then only became known eighty years later.

Girault de Prangey was keenly interested in the architecture of the Middle East, and he toured Italy and the countries of the eastern Mediterranean between 1841 and 1844, producing over 900 daguerreotypes of architectural views, landscapes, and portraits.
