Infection risk posed by cats revealed                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    By Michelle Roberts                                Health editor, BBC News online

Experts say more research is needed into a disease spread by cats after figures show an estimated 350,000 people a year in the UK become infected with toxoplasmosis.
Although only a minority of people - between one and two in every 10 - has symptoms, advisers say extra measures to control the disease may be needed.
The disease is spread by direct contact with cats or eating contaminated food.
The Food Standards Agency has released an official report.
Cat owners are assured that the risks can be managed with good basic hygiene and common sense.
British Veterinary Association past president and veterinary surgeon Harvey Locke said: "The biggest threat is to pregnant women and those who are immuno-compromised, which we have known for some time. It is useful to reiterate that they should take extra care but there is no need for people to get rid of their pet cats or choose not to have cats as pets."
The report says there is a lack of data on the condition, making it difficult to estimate the real burden of the disease.
And it says the current consumer advice should be reviewed.
FSA chief scientist Andrew Wadge said: "This thorough and detailed report points out key gaps in our knowledge about this parasite and suggests areas where more research is needed which will help us in estimating how much infection is due to food and which foods might be the highest risk.
"The report also suggests we look again at our advice to vulnerable groups and ensure that it reflects current scientific knowledge."
In about 80% of cases, a person who is infected will not be aware and will have no symptoms.
Others will develop mild flu-like symptoms, but will not need treatment.
But toxoplasmosis - the disease in humans - can cause serious complications in people with weakened immune systems, such as those with HIV and cancer.
And in pregnant women it can result in the baby being born blind or with brain damage. Three babies in every 100,000 are born with the condition in the UK.
Toxoplasmosis is a notifiable disease in Scotland but is neither a notifiable nor reportable disease in the rest of the UK.
Gloves advice              The culprit parasite, Toxoplasma gondii, can get into the food chain via cats faeces causing contamination of soil, water and plants.
Humans may catch the infection from eating undercooked meat from animals harbouring toxoplasma or from contact with cat litter or contaminated soil.
Once infected, a person is immune from further infection for life.
The best way to avoid infection is to make sure you wear gloves when gardening or changing your cat's litter tray, wash fruit and vegetables before eating and cook meat thoroughly - although it is possible to still enjoy it rare, says the Food Standards Agency.
Pregnant women should also avoid contact with sheep and newborn lambs during the lambing season because there is a small risk that an infected sheep or lamb could pass the infection on at this time.

TB may be spreading from cat to cat                        Cat to cat transmission of TB among family pets in the Home Counties cannot be   ruled out, according to officials

                                                        By Alice Philipson

Family cats may be spreading tuberculosis to one another, officials have said.

An outbreak among pets in the Home Counties has seen at least nine cats become   infected with TB in a matter of weeks.

While it is thought the most likely cause of the disease is pets fighting with   infected badgers, officials have said they cannot rule out that the bacteria   has been spread from cat to cat.

Six of the infected cats were found to be living within 250 yards of one   another on an estate near Greenham Common, in Berkshire.
Professor Noel Smith, Head of the Bovine TB Genotyping Group at Animal Health   and Veterinary Laboratory Agency, said: "The most likely source of   infection is infected wildlife, but cat-to-cat transmission cannot be ruled   out."

There are also warnings that tuberculosis may have spread beyond the two   people known to have contracted the disease, according to Public Health   England.
Dr Dilys Morgan, head of gastrointestinal, emerging and zoonotic diseases   department at PHE, said other people could have been affected but said it   was a "personal choice" as to whether potential victims took up   screening.
"It may be it's spread further. We have screened all close contacts   related to this incident and we have offered screening to all close contacts   in this incident," she told BBC Radio 4's Today.

Asked about reports that some had turned it down, she said: "That's a   personal choice.
"We have assessed the contacts, we have offered them screening, we have   offered them chemoprophylaxis - so preventing the disease if they are   positive."
She said it was important to "get this into perspective" when   considering wider risks.
"These are the first documented cases anywhere in the world so what we   have done, we have raised our risk from 'negligible' - that is no public   health actions - to 'very low'.

"It remains very low but we feel the risk warrants an assessment of the   contacts of cats diagnosed with TB and an assessment of whether they need   screening or not.
"That is the big change here."
Two people in England have developed tuberculosis (TB) after contact with pet   cats in the first ever recorded cases of cat-to-human transmission,   officials confirmed.

The two human cases are linked to nine cases of the Mycobacterium bovis   infection in cats in Berkshire and Hampshire last year, according to PHE.
Both people were responding to treatment.
Veterinarians believe domestic cats could be catching the disease by venturing   into badger setts or from rodents that have been in badger setts.
Professor Danielle Gunn-Moore, a researcher in feline medicine who has been   studying the presence of TB in cats, warned that people had become   complacent about watching for the warning signs of the disease because there   have been relatively few cases in recent years.
“We’ve all become rather complacent because we haven’t been seeing TB for so   many years but bovis is back with a little bit more significance,” she said.

“It’s important we don’t get blinkered and think it’s only badgers and cattle   that get infected. This is a bacteria that is not very fussy about who it   infects.”
She said she had dealt with cases in which dogs had also passed on   Mycobacterium bovis to humans.
Nine cases of Mycobacterium bovis infection in domestic cats in Berkshire and   Hampshire were investigated by the Animal Health and Veterinary Laboratories   Agency (AHVLA) and PHE last year.
PHE said it had offered TB screening to 39 people identified as having had   contact with the nine infected cats.
Of these, 24 people accepted screening. Two were found to have active TB and   there were two cases of latent TB, which means they had been exposed to TB   at some point but did not have an active infection.

Both people with active TB disease have confirmed infection with Mycobacterium   bovis.
PHE said there have been no further cases of TB in cats reported in Berkshire   or Hampshire since March 2013.
Analysis of the samples of active TB from the humans and the infected cats by   the AHVLA showed the Mycobacterium bovis was "indistinguishable".
This "indicates transmission of the bacterium from an infected cat",   PHE said.
In the cases of latent TB infection, it was not possible to confirm if they   were caused by Mycobacterium bovis.
Dr Dilys Morgan, head of gastrointestinal, emerging and zoonotic diseases   department at PHE, said: "It's important to remember that this was a   very unusual cluster of TB in domestic cats.

'M. Bovis is still uncommon in cats – it mainly affects livestock animals.
"These are the first documented cases of cat-to-human transmission and   so, although PHE has assessed the risk of people catching this infection   from infected cats as being very low, we are recommending that household and   close contacts of cats with confirmed M. Bovis infection should be assessed   and receive public health advice."
Figures show that TB caused by Mycobacterium bovis is diagnosed in fewer than   40 people in the UK each year.
The majority of cases are in the over-65s, most likely due to a latent   infection acquired years earlier becoming active again.
