theSun remains the highest circulated English daily
Posted on 28 November 2014 - 02:08pm

AUDITED circulation figures for January-June 2014, were formally released by ABC Malaysia in a press conference conducted by chairman, Karthi Palanisamy, and ABC audit committee chairman, Fan Chen Yip.

The latest audit confirms that theSun remains the highest circulated English newspaper (print edition), registering a daily average circulation of 305,473 copies, during the first half of 2014, as compared to 305,000 reported for July-December (SH) 2013.

This is 14,405 copies (or 5%) more than The Star, which has been reported with 291,068
copies in average circulation during the same period, as compared to 289,611 copies
during the previous half-year (July-December 2013).

New Straits Times (NST) has been reported with 74,711 copies, indicating a decline of
40,859 copies (over 35%) compared to January-June 2013, the same period last year.
The FH 2014 report indicates a further 4% decline (2,974 copies) from their audited circulation in July-December 2013.

In January-June 2013, NST was reported with 115,570 copies, reflecting a dynamic 24%
increase of 22,249 copies (over the 93,321 copies reported during July-December 2012).
However, the July-December circulation 77,685 copies, indicated a decline of 37,885
copies (33%) during the second half of 2013, when compared with the 115,570 average distribution reported for January-June 2013.

New Straits Times has recorded highly dissimilar figures during the two previous reporting periods in 2013, reflecting dynamic (percentage) increase and substantial decline within a 12 month period, which has rarely, if ever, been noticed in any major Asian environment.

When asked about this rare anomaly, Fan mentioned that he was unaware of this trend but acknowledged that it definitely required further investigation by the current and previous audit committee.

However, both reiterated that Malaysian print industry has "benefitted from the rapid expansion of digital news audience". It would be "grossly inadequate to presume a weakening situation for newspapers" because the news content is being consumed across modes. Almost all publishers had registered "an increase of between 20% to 40% in their digital circulation".

Net Take-Out: Print edition publishers still enjoy demand for their content. But they must accept that their content will be "increasingly consumed across modes", while simultaneously exploring initiatives to sustain the demand for print editions.

The print edition and digital audits are executed independently. Chairman Karthi, in a previous communication, had formally confirmed that "ABC issues separate certificates for print circulation and digital replica circulation. ABC does not issue a combined certificate". This amplifies that "ABC does not in any way promote the figures as a combined figure".

It should be carefully noted that audited circulation represents "an exact count". Combining print
edition circulation and digital edition circulation is unlikely to be an exact count, since there
would be some amount of duplication between the two modes. Particularly so, when the
same readers are being offered subscription to both modes at a special package price.

ABC audited figures for paid dailies represent their circulation across various prices/trade terms, not just at the published cover price.

Pursuing a free distribution business model, theSun has consistently maintained a
circulation base of over 300,000 copies since 2010, concentrating resources on
providing concise, balanced, unvarnished editorial content, which also allows scope of
prioritizing distribution to PMEBs (professionals, managers, executives, businessmen)
and the urban white-collar sector. These consumer segments in Malaysia have the
most potential purchasing power.

Not surprisingly, theSun advertising revenue accruals have grown by over 26% during
January-December 2013, compared to January-December 2012 and by 20% during the 2013-14 Financial Year (compared to FY 2012-13). This has been largely powered by aggressive
marketing strategies and gain of several new advertisers and clients.

Bahasa Dailies
Tracking the gross circulation of the four leading Bahasa dailies, one notices an overall decline of 14.5% over the past five reporting periods (since January-June 2014).

The two Bahasa dailies with the highest circulation actually reflect a much higher percentage decline, than this genre average.
a) Harian Metro still retains its circulation leadership with 313,690 copies in January-June 2014. But this simultaneously reflects a consistent decline of 20.4% from the 394,026 copies reported in January-June 2012.
b) Kosmo, which has the second highest circulation (197,202 copies) has declined by 27.3% over the same period.

Berita Harian with 125,514 copies reflects a growth of 5% (6,351 copies) over the previous half year. But this also indicates a decline of 33,038 copies (21%) from the same January-June period in 2013. Besides 13.4% decline since January-June 2012.

Utusan with 171,663 copies reflects the lowest percentage decline (5.3%) over the past five audit periods.

The Star is tops again

PETALING JAYA: The Star has not only retained its position as the country’s top-selling English daily, but is one of only two paid-circulation national dailies to grow its print circulation in the first half of this year.

In releasing its latest audit report yesterday, the Audit Bureau of Circulations (ABC) Malaysia said The Star’s print circulation rose from 289,611 in the second half of last year to 291,068 during the January to June period this year.

The Sunday Star’s figure increased from 292,226 to 293,195 for the same period, it said.

The only other national paid-circulation daily to see growth was Berita Harian.

New Straits Times’ print circulation continued to decline, falling to 74,711 from 77,685 in the second half of last year and 115,570 in the first half .

The Star also substantially extended its lead in digital replica circulation. Both The Star and Sunday Star ePaper saw a 64% jump from the preceding audit cycle, reaching 81,367 and 81,498 copies respectively.

The closest rival is The Edge with its digital circulation of 9,667, followed by New Straits Times at 3,347.

ABC vice-chairman Fan Chen Yip, who is also audit committee chairman, said at a press conference that nearly all newspaper publishers registered an increase of between 20% and 40% in their digital circulation, which was a good sign.

“Another good sign is the increasing number of ABC newspaper members submitting details of digital replica copies,” he said.

“Publishers have reacted or are reacting to changing trends in media consumption and are adjusting their business approach.

“Publishers are also looking at new ways to increase engagement with their readers and no format does it better than digital,” Fan said.

ABC chairman Karthi Palanisamy said it was incorrect to presume a weakening in newspaper circulation when the same publishers had grown their digital news audience.

“Circulation and reach of newspapers must be viewed within this often overlooked, but vital context.”

He noted that there had been an increase in interest among ABC board members to combine the print and digital replica numbers, and the board was still considering it.

Among the issues to be resolved was duplication in readership.

“Everyone is trying to find a yardstick for measurement, including audit bureaus in other countries. It’s good that the board is looking at what others are doing and is using that as a learning process for us.”

On the ABCi committee, which is looking at auditing traffic to websites and mobile apps, Karthi said the bureau hoped to announce data on digital non-replicas for standalone publications by the end of the first quarter next year.

“The committee is taking a lot of guidance from all over the world.

“We’ve been talking about doing this for a long time,” he said.

The Star's circulation continues to rise while others decline

PETALING JAYA: The Star has managed to increase its print circulation amid an overall decline in print-copy sales of national dailies in the country.

The latest data from the Audit Bureau of Circulations (ABC) Malaysia showed that The Star and Sunday Star’s average daily circulation grew from the second half of last year to the first half of 2014 (see table).

Only one other national newspaper audited by ABC, Berita Harian, also saw sales growth during the period. The Malay Mail is not audited.

Some regional newspapers, such as The Borneo Post (Sabah) and Utusan Borneo (Sarawak), also recorded growth in print circulation.

Excluding Makkal Osai, which did not submit its circulation figures for January-June 2014, the ABC-audited national dailies saw a combined 3.3% drop in print circulation.

That translated to slightly over 117,000 copies.

The Bahasa segment was hit hardest in terms of both absolute volume and percentage drop, despite the increase in Berita Harian’s circulation.

The combined print circulation of national Bahasa dailies fell by nearly 5%, or 91,695 copies.

Metro Ahad and Harian Metro suffered the biggest plunge in circulation, each falling by about 30,000 copies.

All the national Chinese newspapers saw declines in circulation with the number for this segment reducing by 10,942 to 802,382 copies.

China Press saw a decrease of 1,302 copies in the first half this year compared to the six-month period of July and December last year while Sin Chew Daily, the largest circulated newspapers in the segment, saw a decrease of 1,093 copies.

Almost all of the ABC-audited newspaper digital replicas posted an increase in circulation.

Digital circulation of all titles, excluding Utusan Malaysia and Mingguan Malaysia, jumped 60% to 204,302. (The figures that Utusan submitted are still being verified.)

The highest digital circulation growth came from The Star and Sunday Star’s ePaper, which added 64% each to hit 81,367 and 81,498 copies respectively.

Digital replicas’ circulation growth did not totally offset the print circulation drop of 117,328. However, it should be noted that ABC currently does not audit traffic to newspaper websites, where many print readers may have also migrated to.

ABC chairman Karthi Palanisamy said in a statement: “It is grossly incorrect to presume a weakening in newspaper circulation when the same publishers have grown digital news audience here.

“Circulation and reach of newspapers must be viewed within this often overlooked but vital context.”

He noted that there had been an increase in interest among ABC board members to combine the print and digital figures as a marketing strategy. However, the board is still deliberating on it.

Meanwhile, ABC vice-chairman and audit committee chairman Fan Chen Yip said ABC newspaper members in the peninsula were making great strides in reporting digital replica copies.

He said it was a good sign to see the increasing number of members submitting details of their digital replicas.

He expected newspapers to continue to be a very important advertising medium, as publishers moved to a much more engaging and cost-effective format.
