Umno division chiefs to hold solidarity meeting on March 8

PETALING JAYA: A special meeting of all Umno division chiefs is scheduled to be held on March 8 to reaffirm their support to their president.
However, division chiefs are keeping mum on the reason for the gathering, but it is believed that they want Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak to know that they fully back his leadership.
Last year, a similar division chiefs' meeting of support was held following criticism from former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad of Najib's administration.
Among the division chiefs who confirmed the March 8 meeting was Kinabatangan division chief Datuk Bung Moktar Radin.


"As division chiefs, we like to listen to the Prime Minister explain some issues to us in person. We would like to listen to his explanations regarding many issues raised like 1MDB, economics and so on.
"The Prime Minister has promised to see all division chiefs twice a year so this is part of the arrangement," Bung added.
When queried further, Bung dismissed rumours that the gathering was to counter an internal party threat against Najib.
He said they would mainly discuss economics matters and strengthening party leadership.
"Normally, these meetings will be about current issues. It is also to strengthen the relationship between division heads," said Bung.
A Selangor Umno division head, meanwhile, said the meeting was a show of "solidarity" for Najib's administration, but declined to elaborate further.
The date of the meeting is significant in many ways. It is the date of the 12th general election in 2008, which saw Barisan Nasional losing its two-thirds majority in parliament for the first time in nearly 40 years.
Among the attendees are division chiefs who are part of the "setiakawan" circle comprising loyalists and politicians whose close ties with Najib go back to his days as Umno youth chief in the 1980s.
