Royal BabyThe Duchess of Cambridge has given birth to a girl, Kensington Palace has announced. The princess - who is fourth in line to the throne - was "safely delivered" at 08:34 BST, the palace statement said.

The Duke of Cambridge, who was present for the birth of the 8lbs 3oz (3.7kg) baby girl, brought his 21-month-old son Prince George to visit his sister at St Mary's Hospital, west London.

The couple and their daughter will leave hospital on Saturday evening.

They will travel home to Kensington Palace, where Prince George has now returned.

In a statement, Kensington Palace said: "Their Royal Highnesses would like to thank all staff at the hospital for the care and treatment they have all received.
"They would also like to thank everyone for their warm wishes."

As he left the hospital briefly to pick up his son, Prince William told the waiting crowds the couple were "very happy".
Both Catherine and her daughter are "doing well", Kensington Palace said. The name of the baby will be announced in due course.

The Prince of Wales, who had earlier said he was hoping for a grand-daughter, and the Duchess of Cornwall said they were "absolutely delighted".

The fourth in line to the throne will be known as Her Royal Highness Princess Charlotte of Cambridge.

She was born on Saturday in the Lindo Wing of London's St Mary's Hospital weighing 8lbs 3oz (3.7kg).

Why Charlotte?

Charlotte, the feminine form of Charles, has a long royal pedigree and became popular in the 18th Century when it was the name of George III's queen.

The King bought Buckingham House in 1761 for his wife Queen Charlotte to use as a family home close to St James's Palace - it became known as the Queen's House and is now Buckingham Palace.

Charles is the name of two former kings and of the Prince of Wales, the princess's grandfather.

Charlotte also has more recent connections for the royal couple.

On the duchess's side, it is the middle name of her sister Pippa Middleton and on the duke's it is the name of his cousin Charlotte Spencer, Earl Spencer's youngest daughter.

The earl tweeted: "Perfect names. My 2-year old Charlotte Diana will be thrilled at cousinly name-sharing."

According to figures from the Office for National Statistics, Charlotte is the 21st most popular girl's name in England and Wales with 2,242 babies being given it in 2013.

Elizabeth is 39th in the list but Diana is not in the top 100.

A family name

Princess Charlotte
By Peter Hunt, BBC royal correspondent

Hard facts and royal pregnancies, labours and births are not natural bedfellows.

They represent a moment where the very personal, a couple celebrating the arrival of a daughter, collide with the very public - the father is a future king.

So, we don't know why William and Kate chose Charlotte as the first name of the fourth in line to the throne.

It conveniently has links to the Middletons, the present Windsors and past royals.

Elizabeth and Diana are more obvious choices.

Prince William has spoken of how, as he becomes older, his grandmother has become an even more important part of his life.

And it was inevitable that he would honour his mother and inevitable that he wouldn't "burden" his daughter with Diana as a first name.

As William said when he gave his fiancee his mother's engagement ring, it's a way of keeping her "close to it all".

Prime Minister David Cameron congratulated the duke and duchess on their new arrival and said he had "always liked the name Charlotte".

"It's a lovely name, and it must be such a precious time for this young couple," he said.

The King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery mark the arrival of the princess with a 41-round gun salute

Earlier in the day gun salutes took place in London to mark the birth.

Soldiers from The King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery rode out in a procession from Wellington Barracks, near Buckingham Palace, to sound 41 shots in Hyde Park .

At the same time, the Honourable Artillery Company left their Armoury House barracks in the City of London to fire a 62-gun salute at the Tower of London.

A Kensington Palace spokesman said on Sunday: "The duke and duchess are hugely grateful for the messages of congratulations they have received from people all over the world.

"It means a great deal to them that so many people have celebrated the arrival of their new daughter."

The Prince of Wales, Duchess of Cornwall and Catherine's parents and sister visited on Sunday

The Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall spent more than an hour with their new granddaughter. The duchess's parents, Michael and Carole Middleton, and sister Pippa also met the princess.

Prince Harry, who narrowly missed the princess's birth after returning to Australia to finish his secondment to the country's military, said his new niece was "absolutely beautiful" and he could not wait to meet her.

French in origin, the name Charlotte means "petite" and "feminine" or "free man".

The princess's nicknames could include Charlie or Lottie, but we think she'll probably be known as Charlotte most of the time (especially when she's been naughty).

16.18

The baby will officially be known as Her Royal Highness Princess Charlotte of Cambridge.

But until recently, she would not have been called a princess at all. The Queen brought in a rule change brought when the Duchess was pregnant with Prince George. Before this, the new princess would have been given the title Lady Charlotte Mountbatten-Windsor.

Here's a bit more background on the choice of Charlotte, a traditional name with royal connections.

Queen Charlotte was the wife of George III, known as the "mad king", and was a keen botanist who founded the world-renowned Kew Gardens.

Their first daughter was called Charlotte and George IV also gave the name to his only child.

It has featured in Kate's family as her sister Pippa Middleton has it as her middle name.

16.06

We understand that the Duke and Duchess will now not be going to Anmer Hall - when the princess is likely to meet the Queen for the first time - until tomorrow at the earliest.

16.03

According to one of the country's biggest bookmakers, betting patterns suggest that someone got word of the name about 10 days ago, and that news began to leak out to other people, which is why Charlotte ended up being second favourite .

Outside Kensington Palace, royal fans have been giving their reaction to the name.

Munever Halil, from Catford, in south east London, said the name Charlotte showed William and Kate were in touch with popular modern names.

The 52-year-old, who spent several hours outside Kensington Palace trying to catch a glimpse of the young family, said: "I so much wanted the name Diana to be in there somewhere. I wanted it to be Elizabeth Diana, so I think it's lovely."

American tourist Emily Markey, 21, said she was particularly pleased with the name.

"I think the name is awesome. My mum's name is Charlotte, so go her," she said. "I've always loved Princess Diana so I'm really pleased."

Student Jemma Large, 19, from Milton Keynes, said: "I think Charlotte is a nice modern name, and I like the homage to Diana. Obviously the name Elizabeth is nice for the Queen too, so I really like it. I think it is a good choice."

The betting industry is estimated to have paid out one million pounds to punters who guessed the name Charlotte, according to Ladbrokes.

Spokeswoman Jessica Bridge said: "Charlotte was the hot tip over the weekend and royal watchers up and down the land are quids in. We may have lost a fortune but we're paying out with a smile and wish the Duke and Duchess all the best."

But bookies William Hill said they were breathing a sigh of relief that William and Kate picked Charlotte - and not their favourite Alice.

Spokesman Rupert Adams said Charlotte finished as their 3/1 second favourite, with 5,096 punters correctly guessing the name and in total they would pay out just over £100,000 in the name market.

One lucky royal fan - a woman from Barnes - has won £1,400 after placing £400 on the correct name at odds of 5/2 on Saturday evening.

So, why have William and Kate decided to name their daughter Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana?

Here we examine how the choice honours royal history, the Queen and Prince William's mother.

The name Charlotte had been a favourite with the bookies during the week and betting firms have said they would face a huge payout if any of the heavily-backed top five names were chosen by the Cambridges.

Before the princess's name was revealed, Coral had slashed the odds on Charlotte into 5/2, making it the favourite ahead of Alice.

Although Alice and Olivia also proved popular in the betting, Charlotte emerged as the bookies' worst result, attracting a huge gamble in recent days.

"After punters had already correctly predicted a girl, we were praying Will and Kate would opt for anything but Charlotte, Alice or Olivia," said Coral's Nicola McGeady. "As if Saturday's pay-out wasn't enough, we've now had to double it today making this one of the most costliest results in royal betting history."

Princess Charlotte has cost the betting industry one million pounds

Here's how people are responding on Twitter to the news of the royal baby's name - and it's overwhelmingly positive:

So excited that Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana has a name (and a lovely one, at that)! She is beautiful like her Mum. #RoyalBaby
— Rebecca Thomas (@RebeccaEllen14) May 4, 2015

What a royal name. Welcome to our world Your Royal Highness Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana of Cambridge. #RoyalBaby

Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana, great choice of name xx
— A (@athenafstam) May 4, 2015

15.18

Despite the Cambridges' choice of Charlotte, it seems the popularity of the name has dipped in recent years.

Charlotte was ranked 21st in the Office for National Statistics girls' names statistics of 2013, with 2,242 births. It had dropped 12 places since 2003.

15.15

The Cambridges are following in royal footsteps by giving Princess Charlotte the middle name of Elizabeth. Our current Queen is of course an Elizabeth, as was her mother, Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, who became the Queen Mother. Elizabeth is also Kate's middle name.

And the name Diana, after the Duke's beloved mother Princess Diana, will ensure a Diana will once again be among the most famous - and most photographed - people in the world.

15.11

By naming their new baby Princess Charlotte, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are continuing a long tradition in both the Royal Family and what is cheekily known as the House of Middleton.

The feminine form of “Charles,” Charlotte means “petite,” and was therefore perhaps a fitting name for the slight of form Charlotte Bronte, the author and arguably the most famous Charlotte to date.

An early Princess Charlotte of Wales had been an heir to the throne but died in childbirth in 1817 at the age of just 21 to the great distress of the nation.

She was the only child of George, Prince of Wales, who would go on to become King George IV, and was at the time the only legitimate grandchild of King George III.

Princess Charlotte’s mother, the German-born Queen Charlotte, was the wife of King George the III, who bore 15 children him. She was a great patron of the arts and helped create Kew Gardens.

The Duchess also has a Charlotte in her ancestry, through her father Michael Middleton’s mother’s line.

Her great-great-great-grandmother was Charlotte Ablett, born in 1825 and therefore possibly named for Princess Charlotte, who went on to marry Edward Glassborrow and died in 1900.

And here's how Kensington Palace told the world on Twitter.

The baby will be known as Her Royal Highness Princess Charlotte of Cambridge.

'Diana's Spirit Lives On' in Princess Charlotte, Her Best Friend Reveals

Prince William and Princess Kate have managed to honor three important family members with the birth of their baby girl, Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana.

The name is a nod to grandfather Prince Charles, great-grandmother Queen Elizabeth II and Will's late mother Princess Diana, who died on August 31, 1997.

Diana's presence was felt on Saturday as her son welcomed his second child with wife Kate.

When the couple introduced their baby girl to the world on the steps of St. Mary's Hospital in London, Kate's stunning blue sapphire engagement ring – the same engagement ring Diana once wore – was proudly on display.

The 18-carat sapphire and diamond ring stood out beautifully against the white knitted blanket that was draped over the sleeping princess.

Diana's brother, Charles Spencer, also took to social media after the name was revealed. William's uncle chose to name his fifth daughter after his late sister as well.

Monckton, who is fairly outspoken about Diana, who served as godmother to her daughter Domenica until her death in 1997, Tweeted on Saturday that Diana "would have loved a granddaughter."

She also told PEOPLE in 2013 that she believed Di, who "adored children," would have simple parenting advice to her son (who's proved to be a doting father):"To forget that the world is watching, and to make the most of every single day that they have together."
