Cricketer and Gentleman

Bro Gemukkk

I understand that you are trying to save face of your team mates, gut when gentleman plays cricket if the opportunity is right in front of you, why can't you deliver? Gentleman does not mean being sissy and let the Indian won the game. We are the pride of the nation? We hope that Malaysian cricket would not succumb to losses as their soccer counterparts.

Gentleman in cricket means, when the umpire concluded that you are out, you are out, you do not argue with umpire's decision. There are many examples of being gentleman in cricket, but not like what the Malaysian bowlers did in "penalty". Shame on you bowlers.

Just my 2 cents worth

save face?  tak le.  at malaysian level, apa yang save facenya.  unless if kita sama level dengan test countries, mungkin la kena save face kalau jadi camni.
aku teka je save face.  kalau tak, takkan le indian players pun saja-saja miss.

anyway, aku rasa kalau diorang toss coin hari tu, dah sure settle.

No worries

Bro Gemuk

I do agree with u that our level is not par as Indian, but where are playing against University of Madras, not against Indian or First Class cricket team. The national team bears the Malaysian flag, the pride of the countrymust be attained at all times. Unless those who play cricket for national team have no pride playing for the country they are welcome to ship out. They are many talents in the country that capable to don the national jersey. It just that they are not being exposed to the proper cricket development. Let not the cricket be like soccer, we aim to be test nation by 2020, we have 13 years to achieve the vision. Are we on the right track? I open to all of you give your view.

Cricket: Strauss survives dropped catch, then punishes India

LONDON: Andrew Strauss, the beneficiary of a dropped catch, was in sight of his 11th Test hundred and fourth at Lord抯 on the first day of the first Test against India here yesterday.

At tea, England were 197 for one after batting through the second session without losing a wicket.

Strauss was 84 not out, after being dropped before lunch on 43, and England captain Michael Vaughan, who抎 won the toss, 57 not out.

The duo抯 second-wicket partnership was now worth 121.

England resumed after lunch on 115 for one with Strauss on 43 and Vaughan 23 not out.

Left-arm quick Rudra Pratap Singh struggled for control and bowled two huge wides. And when he did get one straight, Vaughan pulled him for four.

Strauss抯 extra-cover driven four off S. Sreesanth brought up a fifty stand with Vaughan and the left-hander subsequently completed his own half-century in 109 balls with nine fours.

It was his second fifty in as many Tests after he made 77 against West Indies at the Riverside last month.

And when left-arm quick Zaheer Khan strayed, Strauss square-cut him for four - a sure sign he was in form - as England reached 150. Vaughan too was in good touch, leg-glancing experienced leg-spinner Anil Kumble for four.

Star batsman Sachin Tendulkar came on to bowl his occasional leg-spin in a bid to break the stand but met with little success.

Strauss, batting on his Middlesex home ground, was lucky to be at the crease after an uppish square drive went straight to point where Dinesh Karthik, a wicket-keeper by trade but playing a as a specialist batsman, somehow dropped what seemed like a routine chance after apparently failing to sight the ball.

Earlier, Strauss and fellow left-hander Alastair Cook made a brisk start with their fifty partnership up in 52 balls.

India抯 seamers generally struggled with their line although Strauss did unconvincingly edge through the slips on a couple of occasions early on.

Cricket: Malaysia suffer 10-wicket thrashing
By : Devinder Singh

MALAYSIA fell to a crushing 10-wicket defeat to Bangladesh in the first of a four-match Under-19 one-day series at the Kinrara Oval yesterday.

Bangladesh抯 opening bats Mohd Mithun (67) and Rony Talukdar (51) were pivotal in taking the visitors to a quick 127 runs in 27 overs.

Malaysia, who elected to bat on winning the toss, scored 125-8 in their 50 overs with captain Ahmad Faiz Mohammed Noor and vice-captain Faris Almas-Lee Rosmanizam each scoring 27 runs.

Runs were difficult to come by as Faris and Mohd Miran Mohammad Salip (22) each lashed three boundaries while Nik Azril Nik Ariffin (16) was the only Malaysian batsman who scored beyond the ropes for a six.

Three Bangladeshi bowlers picked up two wickets each with Raihan Anas (2-4 in three overs), Tapash Gosh (2-15 in 10 overs) and Talukdar (2-17) doing the most damage.

Sarath Anathasivam and Shahid Ali Khan were the most expensive Malaysian bowlers conceding 30 runs each from nine and five overs respectively.

The teams meet again today at the same venue with the third and fourth matches scheduled for Monday at the Selangor Turf Club and on Wednesday at the Bayuemas Oval in Klang.

Malaysia are using the series as preparation for the Asian Cricket Council Under-19 Trophy on Aug 18-29 in Kuala Lumpur where they have Hong Kong, Qatar, Kuwait and Afghanistan for company in Group B of the 10-nation tournament.

Group A consists of Nepal, Thailand, Oman, United Arab Emirates and Singapore with the top two in each group advancing to the cross-over semi-finals.

Malaysian Cricket

Future of malaysian cricket lies on the sensible and effective grassroots development. MCA shall encourage and promote school all over Malaysia to adopt this game as part of the co-curricular activities. A good exposure especially playing with test nations cricketers is another vital factor in determining the future of Malaysian cricket. We suffer too much on soccer and let not cricket has the same fate.

Cricket: England facing follow-on

LONDON: England was reduced to 326 for nine wickets by India yesterday and left facing defeat in the Third Test.

India led England by 338 runs at the close of the third day, leaving the home side still 139 short of avoiding the follow-on at The Oval.

Paul Collingwood, Ian Bell, Ryan Sidebottom and Matt Prior all fell in the final session, leaving tailenders Chris Tremlett (14) and Monty Panesar (0) at the crease heading into the penultimate day of the match.

England resumed the day on 24-1 with Cook and nightwatchman James Anderson at the crease, but Anil Kumble, who hit his first Test hundred on Friday, took two wickets in the first session to have the home side struggling on 124-4 at lunch.

Anderson was out leg before wicket to Rudra Pratap Singh before Kumble had Cook caught by Singh for 61.

Captain Michael Vaughan fell caught and bowled to Kumble for 11 on the last ball before the interval and England was trailing by 540 runs with just six wickets standing.

Kevin Pietersen and Collingwood added 78 for the fifth wicket to take England to a healthier 202-4 before Tendulkar dismissed Pietersen for 41 with his first delivery.

Tendulkar turned the ball sharply and it caught the outside edge and flew to Rahul Dravid at slip.

Collingwood fell for 62 lbw to Sree Santh after tea and, when Bell was out for 63 edging Zaheer Khan to wicketkeeper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, all England抯 specialist batsmen were back in the pavilion.

Sidebottom and Prior soon followed and England had slumped from 302-6 to 305-9.

England trail India by 338 runs

LONDON: England struggled to 326 for nine in their first innings after the third day of the third and final Test at the Oval on Saturday, still trailing India by 338 runs.

With two days left and the pitch showing signs of wear, the home team are likely to have to bat for all of Sunday and most of Monday to avoid a 2-0 series defeat, providing India captain Rahul Dravid enforces the follow-on.

Ian Bell (63), Paul Collingwood (62) and Alastair Cook (61) all made half-centuries but England's dire situation demanded a whole lot more. Chris Tremlett was 18 not out and Monty Panesar yet to score at the close of play.

Indian bowler Anil Kumble (centre) is congratulated by Wasim Jaffer (left) and Rudra Pradap Singh after capturing the wicket of England captain Michael Vaughan during the third day of the third Test in London on Saturday. - AFP

India, who racked up a huge first innings 664, are well placed to win their first Test series in England for 21 years while the hosts are set to surrender their six-year unbeaten streak in a home series.

The day started with nightwatchman James Anderson falling lbw for 16, a dismissal that led to England slumping from 78 for one to 124 for four at lunch.

Cook, who cracked 11 boundaries, mixed exhilarating stroke-play with an element of fortune, having been dropped on 13 and 28 at leg slip.

The opener eventually departed when a leading edge from leg-spinner Anil Kumble went to mid-off.

The hammer blow for England came when skipper Michael Vaughan fell on the stroke of lunch. His battling 11 in 66 minutes ended when he drove Kumble straight back at him, sparking wild celebrations by the Indians.

Collingwood and Kevin Pietersen (41) almost batted through the afternoon session before the latter was out five minutes before tea, ruining an otherwise well-paced innings.

Pietersen fell to occasional spinner Sachin Tendulkar's first ball as he neglected his patient approach and tried to force an off-side boundary, only to edge to Dravid at slip.

Bell joined Collingwood and again another recovery seemed on the cards when they added 86 for the sixth wicket.

But Collingwood was given out lbw by umpire Ian Howell when a ball from Shanthakumaran Sreesanth looked as though it would have missed leg stump.

That wicket sparked a second collapse in the innings as England crashed from 288 for five to 305 for nine.

Bell's breezy 96-ball effort also ended with a poor shot as he chased a wide Zaheer Khan ball and was caught behind by Mahendra Dhoni.

India cruise to easy win over Scotland

LONDON: India warmed up for their seven-match one-day series against England with an easy seven-wicket victory over Scotland in a rain-affected match in Glasgow on Thursday.

At one point it seemed the Indians, who included only three players from last week's series-clinching third Test draw against England, would win with embarrassing ease as Scotland slumped to 49 for four after 15 overs.

However, former England all-rounder Gavin Hamilton (44) and Neil McCallum (41) put on 82 in 18 overs to settle things and, after two rain interruptions, the hosts, aided by a string of wides, eventually reached a respectable 203 for nine.

However, India openers Robin Uthappa (55) and Gautam Gambhir (85 not out) put on an untroubled century for the first wicket in 20 overs, making the revised Duckworth-Lewis target of 209 in 46 overs look something of a breeze.

The winning boundary was struck in the 40th over by captain Rahul Dravid, a local favourite from his days as Scotland's overseas player four years ago, in the 40th over.

Wednesday's game was the first of 20 one-dayers that India are scheduled to play before the end of the year, including seven against England, beginning next Tuesday at Southampton.

Cricket: Gambhir seals India victory against Scotland

GLASGOW: Gautam Gambhir steered India to a seven-wicket win in their first one-day international against Scotland here on Thursday with an unbeaten 85.

Chasing a revised target of 209 in 46 overs under the Duckworth-Lewis method, India finished on 212 for three as they warmed-up for a seven-match one-day international series against England, starting next week.

That Scotland made as many as they did was largely down to a stand of 82 between former England cricketer Gavin Hamilton and Neil McCallum with a handy 37 off 34 balls from Craig Wright boosting the total.

India captain Rahul Dravid won the toss and elected to field and his side took two early wickets to get rid of Navdeep Poonia and Fraser Watts.

After a rain break, McCallum struck off-spinner Ramesh Powar back over his head for six.

India抯 reply got off to a slow start with 15 runs scored in the first seven overs. But Robin Uthappa, after a nervy start, made 55 off 62 balls before he was bowled by Wright.

Uthappa抯 exit was the cue for Gambhir to up his tempo and he completed his fifty off 76 balls.

Yuvraj Singh made a brisk 38 before he was yorked by Jon Blain. That allowed Dravid to come in and hit the winning runs against the side he played for in 2003 when he turned Dewald Nel off his legs.

Lawson takes first steps as coach of Pakistan

LAHORE: Pakistan抯 new cricket coach Geoff Lawson met his new charges here yesterday to start final preparations for next month抯 inaugural Twenty20 World Cup in South Africa.

The 49-year-old former Australian paceman arrived on Monday night to replace Englishman Bob Woolmer who died at the team抯 hotel in Jamaica during the World Cup held in the Caribbean earlier this year.

Lawson, who was accompanied by Pakistan抯 new trainer David Dwyer, was introduced to the players at the national cricket academy.

Both Lawson and Dwyer are on two-year contracts.

Pakistan will fly out to Kenya on Aug 28 where they will feature in a four-nation Twenty20 tournament also involving the hosts, Bangladesh and United Arab Emirates.

They will then compete in the Twenty20 World Cup to be played from Sept 11-24.
