Motorist after being caught with handphone while driving:

I was using phone antenna to dig my ears :puke::puke:

Police catch 5 drivers using handphones daily

Phone and SIM card will be confiscated pending investigations, warn police

IF you think the antenna quote above is a joke, how about this one: 'I wasn't talking on the phone, I was just singing to it.' lol:lol

They aren't jokes but excuses concocted by motorists caught using handphones while driving.

But they are so lame the motorists might as well be joking. The police aren't laughing, though.

They are concerned that despite repeated warnings and media reports, many motorists are still taking lightly the offence of handphone driving.

Indeed, the latest update shows that the number of drivers caught with handphones has gone up.

Just about every day, five errant motorists will be nabbed. And most are unrepentant.

The two excuses above are just the bizarre ones. More common ones are variations on having to take care of an emergency or placating an upset spouse or girlfriend.

In the first 10 months of this year, the police nabbed 1,411 such drivers, versus just 880 over the same period last year. That's an increase of over 60 per cent.

What makes the numbers even more alarming is that offenders are usually spotted during routine police patrols - not as part of a crackdown.

Staff Sergeant Norhizam Ramli, 36, who has been with the Traffic Police for four years, said he can catch up to four handphone driving offenders during just one eight-hour shift.

Such anecdotal evidence is enough to convince the Traffic Police that continued enforcement is still needed.

The Commanding Officer of the Traffic Police Patrol Unit, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Chua Chee Wai, noted that many people still adopt a don't-care attitude to handphone driving.

Recently, he was told about a van driver who was spotted handphone driving by another motorist.

The motorist rang the company number listed on the van.

She had wanted to alert the driver's company so he could be dealt with.

To her dismay, all the company receptionist would say was: 'You're calling just to say this?'

CAN CAUSE ACCIDENT

The 'heck-care' attitude ignores the fact that using a handphone while driving could distract a driver's attention and cause a serious accident.

In 1998, a sports car crashed into a Bendemeer Road bus stop and killed three people.

According to some media reports, eyewitnesses had seen the driver using his handphone just before the accident.

Said DSP Chua: 'Handphone driving is inconsiderate and dangerous. It reduces the driver's ability to respond because when you're talking, your concentration is not there. You're not focusing.'

He advised drivers to ask their passengers to make or take calls for them, or stop the car in a safe place before using the phone.

Another problem could be how people seem to instinctively pick up their phones when it rings.

DSP Chua advises drivers that it is a good practice to switch their phones to the silent, non-vibrating mode whenever they get into their cars.

They can check whether they have missed any calls after reaching their destination.

He also cautioned people against using phones while waiting for a red traffic light to turn green.

'It's human nature to continue a conversation - so when the light turns green, you either hog the road by not moving, or you handphone drive.'

Apart from fines and demerit points, the police warn that offenders will have their phones confiscated when they are caught.

When an officer pulls a driver over for handphone driving, the offender's handphone and SIM card will be seized to facilitate investigation, said
DSP Chua.

And with handphones becoming sophisticated gadgets in which to store vital information, errant drivers will be all the more inconvenienced when caught.

DSP Chua said: 'Taking the phone is compulsory, that's not part of the punishment. So if the phone also has a PDA function, the driver will have to go without it.'

If the driver needs vital information from the phone, he or she can call the investigating officer to retrieve it. But of course, this cannot be immediately done, he added.

Driving home the point, DSP Chua said: 'Rather than make trouble for themselves, just don't phone and drive.'

20 years' jail for 2 cannabis traffickers

They escape death penalty under reduced charges. Both will be caned
By Elena Chong

TWO men who originally faced the death sentence for trafficking in cannabis were given the minimum 20 years and 15 strokes of the cane on reduced charges yesterday.

Saiful Baktiar Bahri, 30, and Vincent Chang Yong Sen, 31, were initially charged with having 1.1kg of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking. The charges for both men were later reduced to trafficking in not less than 499.9g of cannabis.

Saiful Baktiar was convicted of trafficking in six blocks and 16 packets of vegetable matter with not less than 499.9g of cannabis in a vehicle at the void deck of Block 555, Hougang Street 51 on April 13.

Chang also admitted having 15 blocks and six packets of vegetable matter with cannabis weighing not less than 499.9g for trafficking at his third-floor flat at Block 555 the same day.

Anyone convicted of trafficking in 500g or more of cannabis faces the death penalty.

Five other charges against Saiful Baktiar and three against Chang were taken into consideration for sentencing.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Shawn Ho said Central Narcotics Bureau surveillance officers saw Saiful Baktiar arrive in a car at Block 555 at 11.10am.

After Chang got into the car, Saiful Baktiar drove to a nearby carpark before returning to the block of flats.

The latter then passed a maroon paper bag to Chang, who returned home with it. Officers arrested Chang at the void deck shortly after.

At his home, he surrendered 14 blocks of cannabis from his kitchen cabinet and another big block from a bedroom.

That evening, Saiful Baktiar was arrested at his home in Flora Drive in Loyang.

His lawyer, Mr Peter Fernando, said in mitigation that his client, who was running a business renting out hi-fi equipment, has a nine-month-old baby son with his wife, a Briton who is a permanent resident here.

Pleading for the minimum sentence, he said his client was very remorseful and that the offence had shattered his life and that of his family.

Acting for Chang, Mr Cheong Aik Chye, together with Mr Amarick Gill, said his client had been a cannabis addict for the past nine years, smoking six to 10g of cannabis every day.

To sustain his addiction, he began to buy the drugs in bulk and sell some to his friends to cover his costs, counsel said.

Mr Cheong also told the court that Chang, who has a 1 1/2-year-old son, kept his addiction from his family and his wife, who was suffering from severe depression.

Wednesday December 8, 10:17 PM
SINGAPORE: Amid a growing number of budget airlines here, the battle is not just over passenger numbers but destinations and the rights to fly there.
Competition in the sector - which is already intense - is expected to heat up after Jetstar Asia starts flying next week.

And Valuair, for one, is hoping that Singapore could sign more open skies agreements with other countries so that it can expand its services.

When Valuair started flying to Perth this month, it became the first low-cost carrier from Singapore to move into the Australian market.

Valuair CEO Sim Kay Wee said: "We are blessed by the fact that we are very liberal with our traffic rights. As Singapore has concluded open skies agreement with many countries, we are not starved of traffic rights.....In that sense, we are luckier we got traffic rights to use and we hope that Singapore could sign more liberal air rights with other countries and we could fly to these countries freely without having to do what AirAsia does."

AirAsia has subsidiaries and hubs in different countries to facilitate its expansion into different markets.

Low-cost carriers are increasingly looking at flying to destinations further away so that they can grow their businesses.

And Valuair is hoping that Singapore can conclude more open skies agreement as it plans to expand into China, India, the east coast of Australia and the Middle East.

Mr Sim said: "We are looking at flying farther afield. We think the markets of India and China need more flights. So we need aircraft for that areas. We are looking at flying in the region of 5 to 8 hours. That would require aircraft that can do that type of flight lengths so that the entire region would be our market place."

To meet those targets, Valuair is looking into adding more and bigger planes into its fleet. - CNA

ni baru test kecik....krismas day aje.... kalo new year eve, Phuket smua tempat dorang dance tau....kalo 12 malam smua ngah trance mabuk2 countdown ribu2 orang, tahu2 ombak hempas, lagi haywire.

aku dengar berita ni, aku teringat khutbah tu hari kat darul aman, Ustaz tu cakap cuba bayangkan masa kita ngan joget2 ramai2 lelaki pompuan kat tepi pantai sambut tahun baru then kiamat datang....

Tadi CNN,
Aceh so far dorang cakap 500 lives lost,
kat Sri Lanka about at least 2000 smua coastal areas
then fishermens kat Thailand/Sri Lanka smua habis...

Aku dengar kat Phuket sapa ngah snorkelling, ombak tu smua seret dorang buang kat pantai, dorang survive.
tapi yang kat pantai tu yang kena tarik ombak masuk balik laut.

Then this angmo kan, dia describe kat phone call to CNN newsreader, dia cakap pagi tu, bila dia pegi tepi pantai, dia realise air laut surut semacam...
Ni aku rasa cam wayang pilem Deep Impact, bila aseteroid tu hempas kat laut, air laut semua surut, before dia datang balik ngan tsunami...tak bleh imagine siot.
