sedikit info..

Celebrated on the 15th day of the 7th Lunar month. On this day it is believed that the "Gates of Hell" are opened and that the dead return to visit their living relatives.  The Chinese feel that they have to satisfy the imprisoned and hungry ghosts in order to get good fortune and luck in their lives.

Historically, families have offered sacrifices of  newly harvested grain to departed ancestors on this day, which also coincides with the Buddhist Ullambana, Deliverance, Festival and the Taoist Ghost Festival, called "Chung Yuan" in Taoist terminology. Since each of these traditions in some way honors the spirits of the departed, the seventh lunar month has come to be known as Ghost Month, celebrated as a time when the "Good Brethren", ghosts from the underworld, come back to earth to feast on the victuals offered by the living. Over time the Ullambana Festival and Ghost Festival have melded together to become the present day Chung Yuan Putu or "Mid-origin Passage to Universal Salvation."

The festival is currently celebrated with ceremonies at homes, temples, associations, and guilds. Prayers are offered to the dead and offerings of food such as chicken, vegetables, fruits, bean curd and white rice are placed at street corners and roadsides to appease the spirits. This is believed to prevent the wandering spirits from entering their homes and causing disturbances in their households.

Offerings are also made by burning replica money notes, which are also known as 慼ell money

[quote]Buddhist and Confucian Origins

The Hungry Ghost Festival originated during the Buddhist fusion with classical Chinese filial piety, a tradition that demanded reverence for one's elders.  As explained by Confucian tradition, children should express overwhelming gratitude to their parent抯 from whom all possessions come:  揟he duty of children to their parents is the fountain whence all other virtues spring.  Our body and hair and skin are all derived from our parents.

It is thought that the gates of Hell are opened on the 15th day of the lunar seventh month, releasing hungry ghosts into the world. Though the day is not officially marked in the calendar, most people will not forget to perform the rituals required to keep the ghosts happy. They will prepare rice, rice wine, bean sprouts, bean curd, fruits, dried loon ngan and peanuts or candles to serve the ghosts in the streets. Then they will light up red candles and incense to please the ghosts. They all try their best to placate the ghosts with gifts. In order to avoid a run in with a spirit there are many forms of taboo that must be adhered to. Ghosts like to walk along the walls and hide themselves around dark comers. The public avoid night-outs, and many Chinese even hold themselves from activities and many businesses decline in the lunar seventh month. Many people follow the customs because they are fear of hungry ghosts.

whatever it is, bila time hungry ghost month, ramai dinasihatkan jgn keluar rumah mlm2. pastu the chinese akan buat their prayers and offerings; some of them do that at the road sides. so be careful when u walk. don't step or langkah the offerings as a way of respect. i heard  that during the hungry ghost month, the hell gate is open and ghosts are around us. chinese operas are staged for "their" entertainment. these are some of the things that i know about this "special" month.
