Car- a necessity or luxury?

Many of us buy car for different purpose. Decades ago a household used to own a car. Now you can see cars are parked haywired in a house. No doubt it is impossible not to own a car nowadays. Public transport is not reliable and if you travel a lot it is cheaper to own a car. Car is a mode of transport. Some of us buy car for more than for a mode of transport.
This is how I categorised them:

1. A necessity just for a mode of transport.

2.For comfort, better safety

3. For better comfort, safety and image

4. For performance

5. For big family

Nowadays people own more than one car. One for working, one for market and mamak stall, one for weekend use and one for outstation. Not to mention some collect classic cars. Phew...that defeat the purpose of buying a car for necessity. Which category are you guys in?

depends on how much money you have ..
*money so-so*
= kancil, iswara ..

*money quite okay*
= wira, waja ... or perhaps toyota, honda..

*money i can afford to pay roadtax RM6000 per year*
= nice car to show-off

*ooohhh...i have tons of money, look at me*
= probably a species that turn ppl's heads

mansairaku (at the moment)
= jalan kaki ....or sometimes, naik train

If it is a necessity and purchase was made in accordance with affordability, then it is not a luxury. My hubby and I happen to agree with a simple fact that a car takes you from point A to point B. That's all. We have no need to flaunt....and so on. We share a car now that we work at the same place and his ole junk had been maintained and used by our son to get to College and move around. Why? We voted against my son using a bike ................a number in his family have been victims of it's vulnerability. Public transport is almost absent. But then the car is there and I must say it is now in better hands.  I hope my hubby doesn't read this!

I had chosen a very practical car such that when I was wheelchair bound a couple of years back (ruptured tendon from badminton) we could easily bring along the wheelchair in it's boot. So, at least I wasn't home bound as well. Of course I enjoyed the kindness the public showed me whenever I went to the Supermarket then.

it depends so much on ur cashflow every month

as for me, my idea of having a car is just like hamizoa, to make me move from one point to another but for my hubby, the characters count...

so as we agreed, XC90 will be our family car one day ...one day

yang paling asas, kereta adalah satu keperluan... tapi bila dah ada kemampuan yang lebih dan yang paling asas tu pun boleh/dah dipenuhi, terpulanglah kepada pemilik kereta tersebut memiliki apa yang dia suka....

I would say choice of car depends a lot on one's need.  To me it is only a mode of transport and choice of make and model reflects more of my simple approach towards life and practical at the same time. My hubbypun bukan someone yang suka belek2 kereta. Pardon me, Atomic_Omnikid, I find that in many people there is a sense of ego when it comes to choice.......they will stretch their ringgit to buy the most expansive car they can afford. Now, call it filling up their ego if I may. I have seen people in the most surprising of circumstances buying a  mean machine, then flaunting it to ensure people know it. I suppose this may be the 'fun' that Atomic_Omnikid suggested....to show off. Question is ...is that necessary? I guess it depends on the individual......some may find it a necessity to show......some really like the mean thing - the power- In the final analysis, it's their money...so they decide how best they want to spend it.....even if it means having to part with it once the maintenence bill becomes a problem.

I just renewed my Kancil's road tax. I can't believe it, it was just RM20. Last year's was RM30.
Kancil is a very pratical car to use if you are travelling within your surrouding area but not outstation.
No doubt there are a lot of people use it to travel long distance but I don't feel safe in the car. Should any unforseen circumtances happen the occupants would end up like sardin sandwich.

Who use your kancil? Your family?

btw...

If we really want to show off, better get a sports coupe, a top of the line mini cooper, or other impractical car. That means you really have money...

Better still, get those very overpriced bike that goes in the range of more than 100k... Produced by the likes of BMW and other marquee...

If you buy luxurious, impractical means of transport, that really means you have so much money that you don't know where to spend on...

People will be impressed, and envious... Those honda accord guys are nothing.

or you maybe as rich as the ikea guy who drive an old volvo... But people won't know about it...
