Damn Smallis a very versatile 50MB mini desktop oriented Linux distribution. DSLwas originally developed as an experiment to see how many usabledesktop applications can fit inside a 50MB live CD. It was at firstjust a personal tool/toy. But over time Damn Small Linux grew into acommunity project with hundreds of development hours put intorefinements including a fully automated remote and local applicationinstallation system and a very versatile backup and restore systemwhich may be used with any writable media including a hard drive, afloppy drive, or a USB device.
DSL has a nearly completedesktop, and many command line tools. All applications are chosen withthe best balance of functionality, size and speed. Damn Small also hasthe ability to act as an SSH/FTP/HTTPD server right off of a live CD.In our quest to save space and have a fully functional desktop we'vemade many GUI administration tools which are fast yet still easy touse. What does DSL have?
XMMS (MP3, CD Music, and MPEG), FTPclient, Dillo web browser, Netrik web browser, FireFox, spreadsheet,Sylpheed email, spellcheck (US English), a word-processor (Ted), threeeditors (Beaver, Vim, and Nano [Pico clone]), graphics editing andviewing (Xpaint, and xzgv), Xpdf (PDF Viewer), emelFM (file manager),Naim (AIM, ICQ, IRC), VNCviwer, Rdesktop, SSH/SCP server and client,DHCP client, PPP, PPPoE (ADSL), a web server, calculator, generic andGhostScript printer support, NFS, Fluxbox and JWM window managers,games, system monitoring apps, a host of command line tools, USBsupport, and pcmcia support, some wireless support.
Damn Small is small enough and smart enough to do the following things:

maksud aku, dia guna DSL dan hostkan web NoGUIX dia tu.
taktau la kot2 skrg dia dah tak pakai DSL ni.
dulu pc dia brapa ratus MHz je. |

DSL ni boleh sumbat kat pc veteran '98 (kut)
sb dia kata leh jalan ngan 16MB ram
pc veteran pesara perang aku celeron 300A tp problem ngan display le pc tu
nak on mesti stuck kat display
monitor pon just tunjuk 1/2 skrin yg sepatutnya jek  |

pc camtu (especially pc lama - jurassic age  ) patutnya guna grafik kad. seeloknya guna atleast 8mb.
DSL tu dia run guna ram cuma 128mb aje kot. mmg smooth. |

Hehehe.. ko dah ketinggalan la bzzts,
sekrg dah pakai Dual Core + VMware ESX 3.5 + 7x Virtual Machines semua running noguix.
BTW, DSL tak sesuai utk production contoh untuk hostkan popular forum, chat room. Tu semua dari aku punya experiences, mudah corrupt bila heavy load, power failure & etc. Plus, memang datang kosong tanpa security langsung. Kalau nak pakai over internet, paham2 le ye!
DSL kalau dari segi frugal installation (Based-on installation), memang setakat makan 200MB space but kalau pilih debian based (Full Installation) masak jugak la, tu belum enabled apt-get lagi.
Tapi, kalau betul nak test DSL, pilih yg version lama v3.1 kalau x silap aku jgn amik versi baru yg mana resources hungry la utk pc-pc lama ni. Memang lagging sokmo...
Any how, aku memang terhutang budi ngan DSL, linux pertama yg aku guna untuk berlajar command2 linux sehingga dapat kerja HP dulu. . Sekarang aku lagi maju weiiiii tarak dah HP! |
