well, pcos ITSELF ni bukan la penyakit yg bahaya cam cancer tu...
tp complicationnya tu yg kita xkan suka..
u will prone to get diabetes, hypertension n ischaemic heart ds.
kalau u lama sgt xperiod, endometrium boleh jadi tebal and can lead to endometrial cancer..
kalau u byk sgt amik OCP,prone to get deep vein thrombosis n ? breast cancer...

PCOS and Infertility

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
PCOS and infertility can go hand in hand. PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) is a major cause of infertility. A symptom of the condition can be nine or fewer menstrual cycles per year. The disorder may also cause heavier than normal bleeding during periods.

These conditions are the result of the ovaries failing to produce hormones that keep the menstrual cycle regular. Because women with PCOS don't have regular periods, many are unable to ovulate and become pregnant. "For obese PCOS women weight loss of more than 5% of pretreatment weight restores menstrual regularity in 89%, of whom 30% achieved spontaneous pregnancy."
-  Saleh AM, Khalil HS. Review of non-surgical and surgical treatment and the role of insulin-sensitizing agents in the management of infertile women with polycystic ovarian syndrome. Acta Obstet Gynecol Scand. 2004 Jul;83(7):614-621.

Insulin Resistance is a root cause of PCOS, which prevents the efficient conversion of food into energy because the walls of the cells have become de-sensitized to insulin. This causes glucose and insulin levels in the blood stream to become severely unbalanced, leading to an increase in free-floating glucose, which is sent to the liver and converted to excess body fat. As a result, there can be weight gain and obesity, which, in turn, can lead not only to PCOS but also to other serious health conditions like Cardiovascular Disease and Type 2 Diabetes.

An estimated 5-10 percent of all women in their childbearing years have Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. The numbers are rising along with America's twin epidemics of obesity and inactivity. Researchers had long wondered why PCOS sufferers shared a constellation of health problems, ranging from stubborn obesity and heart disease to breast and uterine (endometrial) cancers and a 7-10 times higher risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes.

Because the symptoms vary so widely and not all sufferers display all the symptoms, doctors still very often misdiagnose Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. In fact, 8 out of every 10 women with PCOS could have Insulin Resistance, resulting in higher-than-normal insulin levels which may act on the ovaries by increasing male hormones. The end result is that a PCOS sufferer may stop ovulating, as well gain weight, develop skin conditions like acne and skin tags and grow abnormal facial and body hair. Other symptoms include decreased sex drive, high cholesterol levels, exhaustion or lack of mental alertness, depression and anxiety, sleep apnea (breathing problems during sleeping) and thyroid complications.

Since there is no single solution that reverses Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome or Insulin Resistance, you must rely on a multi-faceted approach. A complete system, including nutraceuticals (vitamins, herbs and minerals that are disease specific), a realistic exercise program, nutritional guidance and a support network that can help you change unhealthy lifestyle choices, is required to address these conditions.

If left unchecked, Insulin Resistance and obesity may create excess insulin in the blood stream, a key symptom of PCOS which, as a result produces an abnormal amount of the male hormone testosterone. The increased presence of testosterone may prevent the ovaries from releasing an egg each month, thus causing infertility.

Insulin Resistance, obesity and Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome are causative factors behind infertility, which the Insulite PCOS System can help to reverse. It is specifically designed to lower testosterone levels and reduce weight gain by reversing the symptoms of PCOS in combination with a balanced, nutritious diet and regular exercise. By decreasing testosterone, it's possible to reduce ovarian cysts and help re-establish the delicate balance of your hormones, thereby enhancing the likelihood of ovulation, without which there is no chance of becoming pregnant.

What tests can I have to determine if I have PCOS?

The diagnostic criteria are not definitive for PCOS . However, Insulin Resistance lies behind this condition. There are a few tests that help confirm Insulin Resistance: a fasting insulin blood test and cholesterol panels (specifically the triglycerides).

Your testosterone, your cortisol and DHEA can also be tested.

If your physician can perform a pelvic ultrasound of your ovaries there may be visible cysts. If you do not have cysts this does NOT mean that you do NOT have PCOS. If you have weight gain, acne, hair growth, irregular or absent menses, difficulty with conception, family history of Diabetes or Cardiovascular Disease, you may have this condition. Treatment is usually ineffective pharmaceutically and is usually more effective if strategies are aimed at lifestyle and reducing insulin.

this is what i learned...
nak diagnose pcos based on 3 things:
1. history-no/irregular period,naik bulu2 kat badan mcm ko kata tu,weight gain etc.
2.ratio hormone LH/FSH tinggi
3. ultrasound-nampak chain of pearls...maksudnya tu la those cystic ovaries...

kalau memenuhi criteria 2 out of 3,kira pcos dah...
