Pusan unveils PPP selections

SEOUL --- The Pusan festival unveiled a slimmed-down, more Asian-centric selection for the 11th running of its Pusan Promotion Plan project market.
PPP unveiled 30 projects, down from 35 last year, but still manages a line-up with works-in-progress from many of the region's top auteurs.
These include Sabu and Yama#a Nobuhiro from Japan, Zhang Yuan, Cai Shangjun and Zhu Wen from China, Chang Tso Chi from Taiwan, Viet Linh Nguyen from Vietnam and Lee Chang-dong and Zhang Lu from Korea.
Subject matter of several of the projects is already lending itself to Asian co-productio. Sabu's "Arrested Memories" will be produced by Korea's Fine Cut. Malaysian female director Yasmin Ahmad will work with a Japanese shingle Wa Entertainment, while Taiwanese Ho Wi Ding will team up with a Philippine shingle. Chinese helmer Shu Haolun is attending PPP with a French producer.
Former culture minister and leading Korean helmer Lee Chang-dong will participate as a producer and a co-script writer of "A Brand New Life"(working title), a film by a new French director Ounie Lecomte, as well as his own untitled project. The film will be produced by Korea's Now Film and France's Gloria Films.
The selections also include only two projects from outside Asia, "Crawling at Night" from the U.S. and "Stranger" from U.K., though both have Asian connections.
PPP 2008 also is also including five Korean projects including co-productions. Notable young helmers Jung Bum-shik ("Epitaph") and Choi Dong-hoon ("Tazza") will pitch their new films. PPP is also showcasing a Korean feature animation project for the first time in its history, by helmer Oh Sung-yoon, "YIPSAK-A Chicken Wild," and produced by MK Pictures.
Organizers say they whittled down the 30 projects from more than 200 submissions. The event will run October 3-6.

Pusan film festival glimpse into Asia's independent cinema

SEOUL, Sept. 12 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's largest annual cinematic celebration, the Pusan International Film Festival (PIFF), opens next month and will highlight a diverse group of Asian film makers and non-mainstream talents from around the region.
The festival has been held annually in the southern port city of Busan -- previously spelled Pusan -- since 1996. This year's festival begins Oct. 2 for a nine-day run.
Of the more than 300 films to be screened, 100 are from 14 different Asian countries, including Mongolia, Pakistan and the Philippines, as well as Jordan, said Kim Ji-seok, executive programmer for PIFF.
"We've also selected, for the first time at PIFF, a Kazakh film as the opener," Kim said. "It is an exciting adventure for us."
Kazakh director Rustem Abdrashev's "The Gift to Stalin," which documents the forced resettlement of thousands of ethnic minorities under Joseph Stalin, has been selected as the opening piece for this year's festival.
PIFF's yearly segment "A Window to Asian Cinema" will sum up the cinematic breakthroughs made from the second half of 2007 through 2008.
Indonesia and the Philippines, newly emerging meccas for independent film making, will offer a glimpse into Southeast Asian masterpieces, while Iran will showcase a new generation of artistic films coming out of the Islamic nation. India will preview several socialist films.
Four other programs focusing on Asia are also scheduled during the festival, Kim said.
"Superheroes in Asia," eleven films from various Asian countries, will explore the social and political impact of Hollywood's genre films on each country.
"ANI ASIA!" will feature animated films highlighting styles inspired by the region's varied traditional cultures, including works from Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and other East Asian countries. Through the films audiences will gain insight into each country's unique identities.
Riding on the latest boom in the global film industry, PIFF will introduce the "2008 Asian Omnibus Collection," a compilation of various subject matters and directing styles. The seven films represented in this year's collection address the wide ranging issues of feminism, human rights, fear, love and urban life. Japanese directors Yoichi Sai, Junji Sakamoto and Lee Sang-il, a third-generation Korean-Japanese, as well as Indonesia's Nia Dinata, Indian director Rituparno Gosh and Yongyooth Thongkongtoon from Thailand will present their works.
The festival will feature music videos by established Asian film directors, such as Thailand's Wisit Sasanatieng and Pen-ek Ratanaruang, Malaysia's Ho Yuhang and Yasmin Ahmad, Japan's Nobuhiro Yamamini coopera, and up-and-coming Edwin of Indonesia and Auraeus Solito from the Philippines.
"The festival will give a rare opportunity to view the experimental works of these talented directors, which will surely provide more insight into their film work," Kim said.

PIFF ni baru 2, 3 tahun berada di pentas filem dunia. Agak grand juga lah. Ada yg cakap PIFF ni ala Cannes Asia. 300+ filem akan ditayangkan selama 9 hari. Macam mana lah hakim nak nilaikan filem yang banyak ni.
Tapi hampir semua filem yang dipertandingkan lebih kurang indie filem jer. Oh, Nicholas Saputra pun ada dalam 3doa3cinta. |

Yasmin utamakan penonton Singapura

DALAM sebuah akhbar tabloid berbahasa Inggeris, Kak Pora terbaca laporan mengatakan filem terbaru arahan Yasmin Ahmad, Muallaf bakal ditayangkan di Singapura terlebih dulu berbanding di Malaysia. Beruntung orang Singapura sebab menjadi orang pertama menonton filem Malaysia. Filem itu membariskan pelakon seperti Datuk Rahim Razali dan Sharifah Amani.
Ini bermakna orang di seberang tambak itu berpeluang melihat secara eksklusif Sharifah Amani berkepala botak. Bertuah juga kepada Yasmin kerana beberapa filem arahannya sebelum ini sentiasa mendapat perhatian orang luar. Banyak penganjur festival filem antarabangsa menjemput filemnya. Memang ini hak Yasmin dan produser untuk bawa ke mana saja filem dihasilkannya itu. Malah, Yasmin juga ada hak untuk tidak menayangkan filem arahannya kepada penonton tempatan.
Kak Pora tahu, kalau nak ditayangkan dalam panggung tempatan, kena patuh dengan macam-macam syarat. Ini juga satu taktik Yasmin untuk dapat pujian daripada media di sana seperti mana filem Gubra dan Sepet dulu.
Satu syarat untuk masuk pawagam di Malaysia ialah mesti mendapat kelulusan daripada Lembaga Penapisan Filem Malaysia (LPF). Mendapat kelulusan LPF adalah perkara kurang digemari kepada sesetengah pengarah macam Yasmin dan beberapa pengarah bebas lain. Kalau di Singapura memang ada badan penapisannya sendiri tetapi cara pemerhatian dan tapisan orang sana tidak sama dengan orang kita. Faham-faham sajalah.
Bagi Kak Pora, dalam hidup ini mesti ada peraturan hidup. Begitu juga kalau hendak berkarya seperti buat filem. Kak Pora yakin LPF diwujudkan bukanlah nak menyekat kebebasan berkarya. Bayangkan kalau LPF tidak ada dan semua orang boleh buat filem sebebas-bebasnya kononnya atas alasan kebebasan berkarya dan demokrasi, nanti rosaklah masyarakat dan negara sebab masing-masing hendak kata mereka betul belaka. Boleh jadi kacau bilau negara kita yang ada rakyat berbilang kaum, agama, bahasa dan budaya.
KAK PORA: Cuti raya nanti nak bawa anak tengok filem Senario dan Kami.

S. Korean Film festival opener sells out in record time

SEOUL, Sept. 23 (Yonhap) -- Tickets to the opening film of South Korea's largest annual film festival early next month sold out in a record one and half minutes through sales on the festival's Web site, organizers said Tuesday.
The Pusan International Film Festival (PIFF) said tickets for "The Gift to Stalin" were sold out Monday, breaking the record time of two minutes and four seconds set by "The Coast Guard," which was the opening film for the festival in 2002.
Directed by Kazakh film maker Rustem Abdrashev, "The Gift to Stalin" deals with the grim suppression of minority ethnic groups in the Soviet era. It will be screened at the festival on Oct. 2.
Tickets to the closing film "I Am Happy," by South Korean director Yoon Jong-chan, sold out in seven minutes and six seconds. Based on the novel "Mr. Cho Man-deuk" by the late Lee Cheong-jun, who left an enduring mark on South Korea's contemporary literature and film industry, the film relates the story of wounded souls in a psychiatric ward.
The film festival in Busan -- previously Pusan -- has been held annually since 1996. It begins this year on Oct. 2 for a nine-day run.

The 13th PIFF Opening Film Sets a New Sellout Record
The first Kazakh Opening Film at PIFF, 'The Gift to Stalin', sold out in 1 minute and 30 seconds while Closing film, 'I Am Happy', sold out in 7 minutes and 6 seconds
Opening Film of the 13th Pusan International Film Festival, <The Gift to Stalin> by Rustem ABDRASHEV, sold out in just 1 minute 30 seconds after online ticketing for the opening and closing films began at 6 p.m. on September 22nd, setting a new all-time record. The Kazakh film <The Gift to Stalin>, in its World Premiere, will warm the eager audience with its positive values of love and trust standing above nationality and age.
The 7th PIFF Opening Film <The Coast Guard> sold out in 2 minutes 4 seconds, the 6th Opening Film <Last Witness> recorded 2 minutes 28 seconds, and the 11th Opening Film <Traces Of Love> was sold out in 2 minutes and 45 seconds. However, <The Gift to Stalin> this year set a new record of 1 minute 30 seconds, thanks especially to the stable booking service realized through the efficient online system.
Closing Film <I Am Happy> sold out in 7 minutes and 6 seconds. The film by YOON Jon-chan, director of <Sorum> and <Blue Swallow>, is based on an original short story <Mr. Mandeuk Cho> by LEE Chong Chun who passed away lately , and is invited to hold its World Premiere at this year’s PIFF. Movie goers can still purchase Opening and Closing tickets – 300 of each have been set aside for on the spot sales on opening/closing day.
Ticketing for general screenings start at 9:30 AM on September 24th on the exclusive website (http://piff.netmarble.net) of Netmarble, the online-game site of CJ Internet Co., ltd. Audiences can also book tickets through ‘MobilePIFF’, the first mobile one-stop ticketing service, and at all Busan Bank branches and GS25 convenience stores across Korea. PIFF has allocated 30% of total tickets to on the spot availability to facilitate ticket purchases.
