Plenty to choose from at Ramadan bazaars
By JADE CHAN
HUNDREDS of shoppers thronged the Ramadan bazaar at the Shah Alam Stadium as they stopped by the various stalls to buy food and drinks to break fast on the first day of Ramadan.
The stadium, located in Shah Alam’s Section 13, had about 200 stalls offering a variety of items like murtabak, nasi kerabu, nasi dagang, nasi minyak, nasi lemak kukus, fried noodles, chicken and beef kebab, rojak, pasembur, Penang laksa, Johor laksa, yong tau foo, otak-otak, burger Arab, roti John, satay, as well as an assortment of kuih and cakes.
The stalls selling barbecued chicken were particularly popular as customers formed queues to buy half a bird or an entire piece.
Mansor Che Soh, 55, said his bestsellers were the ayam golek and ayam percik. Also sold are ikan percik and barbecued beef (daging bakar).
Served hot: Grilled fish with sambal were among the items sold at the Shah Alam Stadium’s Ramadan bazaar.
“I’ve had a lot of regulars buying my specialities.
“I have been conducting business for eight years at the Ramadan bazaar. and also operate a shop – Restoran Jaring at Sunway Mentari Business Park,” he said, adding that he could easily sell about 350 birds per day at the bazaar.
Meanwhile, Sufian Ismail, was busy managing his business and overseeing the 10 employees at his two Ayam Bakar Zaharah Madu Asli stalls.
“This is only my second year at the Shah Alam Stadium bazaar, as I shifted my business from Kajang after getting married. But business has been great so I decided to expand it this year,” the 25-year-old said.
Sufian said his birds featured a secret marinade that included honey and chilli powder. He added that he sold an average of 200 birds per day.
Kak Yah’s stall was a hit among customers, too, as they dropped by to buy her roti jala and yau char kuai (Chinese crullers).
The 47-year-old was busy dishing out pieces of roti jala, while her family and worker helped fry the Chinese crullers and attend to customers.
“I can sell an average of 1,000 pieces of Chinese crullers and 500 pieces of roti jala per day,” she said.
Popular item: Fatrhurrohman Baihaqi, 35 (left) overseeing the chickens being barbecued at one of the Ayam Bakar Zaharah Madu Asli stalls.
“I have been conducting my business here for nearly two decades. On other days, I will be busy running my stall at a night market in Meru, Klang,” she said.
Stalls selling drinks like Azrul Azim’s were aplenty, and the drinks came in an assortment of flavours and colours that were pre-packed for customers’ convenience.
“We were not affected by the sugar shortage as we made the necessary preparations.
“Each packet is priced at RM2, and I can sell about 1,000 packets per day,” the 22-year-old said.
“The best-sellers would be the air mata kucing, chrysanthemum tea, honeydew and corn drinks,” he said.
Several businessmen chose to capitalise on the Ramadan bazaar crowd by opening stalls offering wireless broadband Internet services and headscarves, as well as a display of cars. |
