I am reading this book (different cover) at the moment. Is there anyone else doing the same? We may discuss.

It is not an easy read but for those who might be interested, it is an English translation of the original Turkish version. That may be the reason why I find the choice of words are not as subtle as I thought it can be. It gets easier as I progress. The style is not what I have been used to but it is very likable, rather dramatic.

It is a period mistery novel surrounding characters who are into the art of miniaturism. It keeps me thinking if those historical aspect of the book so far is not too far removed from reality, it really was fodder for thoughts.

Orhan Pamuk, pemenang Nobel Kesusastraan 2006. Saya membaca novel yang dibeli oleh abang saya di Egypt. Membaca buku ini buat pertama kali sangat sukar memahami maksud Pamuk dalam bercerita. Seperti saya membaca Salina karya Pak Samad.

My Name Is Red adalah sebuah misteri pembunuhan, kisah seorang seniman dibunuh penuh misteri. Ramuannya dengan seni dan politik, dongengan klasik, terselit juga kisah cinta getir. Pada setiap bab ditulis dengan karakter berlainan.

Saya membacanya berulang-ulang dan perlahan, demi cuma memahami apa yang ingin disampaikan Pamuk. Sungguh teruja!

Hampir sama dengan buku In The Name Of The Rose by Umberto Eco ;  kisah misteri pembunuhan di sebuah biara, di Italy pada kurun ke 14.

Ya, benar tetapi malangnya ada yang beranggapan bahawa kemenangannya  lebih kerana politik dari kesusasteraan. Pamuk lantang bersuara tentang genocide  1m orang2 Armenia di Turki pada Perang Dunia 1 dan 30,000 orang2 Kurds dalam 20 tahun kebelakangan ini.

Sy baru sampai muka surat 110 sahaja. Amat berat pada mulanya. Setiap bab diulas dan di ceritakan oleh karektor yang berlainan termasuklah mayat yang menjana misteri . seekor anjing dan sebatang pokok....setakat yang sy telah baca. Cara ini membuat sy agak selalu terlupa siapa yang bercerita.

Dah sampai mukasurat 264 dan setakat ini sudah ada dua pembunuhan. Misterinya adalah siapa diantara pekerja2 di bengkel dan sebab2 pembunuhan itu dilakukan.

The author go to great length to describe the Persian/Turkish miniaturism and the Frankish style and the dawn of it's influence on the traditional Turkish masters. Very interesting deliberations. One side maintains that painting is not a result of being duped by satan while the other thinks that painting with perspective and shadows resulting in painting something the way it looks, lifelike, amounts to an attempt to duplicate God's work.

While I personally feel that the Turkish/Persian tradition owe some influence of Chinese much of it was brought over or made possible by....surprise...the Mongols, their resentment of the Frankish style make no sense to me. My hubby says it was because the Franks were Christians.

Just completed the book 2 days ago. A very admirable effort I must say considering the number of ppl who had given up. I thought it was all worth while. The author takes a lot of pain to laboriously describe in minute details  the art of miniaturism ....to a spiritual level I must say. But then Pamuk has an atchitucture background. So, I guess he is in his element and the message, yes, is something you gotta read yourself .

Recommended for people with patience

Now I am ready for "Istanbul"

Pada Hami, jalan ceritanya agak mudah juga. Akan tetapi, diskripsi ttg seni lukis miniaturisma yang di beri dengan mendalam itu agak seolah2 menyimpang dari misteri sebenar. Pada Hami, Pamuk terpaksa berbuat demikian kerana mesej yang hendak disampainya perlu kefahaman mendalam tentangnya.

Juga cara penulisannya dimana "saya" di dalam cerita itu bertukar dari bab ke bab, boleh mengkonfiuskan.

this is my 3rd book of Orhan Pamuk. i read Snow and Istanbul beforehand. when i started reading this book, i felt the similarities in terms of religion narration. cerita pasal Nabi SAW dan malaikat Jibrail, Isra' Mikraj dan etc...
i found that this book is less political than Snow and Istanbul.
though i am still about a quarter away from finishing this book.
do you guys notice that there are a few Effendis in this book. probably one day if someone were to do a trivia question about My Name is Red, the question would be: how many Effendi characters are explored in this book? hahha
likewise, i do get lost between the chapters, backtracking my reading to 'catch up' with the backstory of the characters. i mostly like Pamuk's tendency to over-philosophise everything because that is kinda necessary in his writing.
i could go on and on but i'd like to hear what others say about this book.
