Camellia is a genus of flowering shrubs that belong to the family 'Theaceae'. These are evergreen shrubs which can grow up to 20 m in height. Although they are evergreen plants, they require adequate rainfall for their growth, and do not survive in droughts. But they can grow well in semi-shaded as well as fully-shaded areas. Let us get to know some more Camellia plant facts.

Camellia Plant Facts
  • Camellia plants are native to Asia and are commonly found in India, China, Japan, Indonesia and Korea.
  • The genus was named after a Jesuit botanist George Joseph Kamel.
  • There are several species in this genus and more than 100 species have been identified to date.
  • The flowers are large and multicolored, ranging from all shades of red, yellow to pink and white.
  • The fruit of Camellia is shaped like a capsule that can contain 1 - 8 seeds.
  • Although the Camellia cannot survive in extremely cold climates, many hybrid varieties are grown that can survive in these climatic conditions.
  • Pruning or cutting is the best way of camellia propagation.
  • In 1999, Camellia japonica (Japanese Camellia) was officially made the state flower of Alabama state.
  • Camellia sinensis is the most popular species of Camellia whose leaves are used to make tea.
  • Camellia sinensis is commonly known as tea plant / tea shrub, and all varieties of tea like white tea, black tea, green tea and oolong teaare reaped from this species.
  • The leaves of Camellia sinensis (also known as C. sinensis) are used in traditional Chinese medicines to cure asthma and coronary artery diseases.
  • The seeds of Camellia oleifera, another species of camellia, are used for extracting oil. It is known as tea oil and is used for seasoning and cooking.
  • Camellia japonica is a species of Camellia that is mostly found in Japan, China and Korea. It is also known as 'rose of winter', and is a favorite in Japanese gardens.
Camellia Plant Diseases

If grown in improper environment, and if there is poor maintenance, Camellia becomes susceptible to diseases. The most common disease found in Camellia is root rot. It is caused due to harmful fungi present in the soil which kill the roots. As the disease advances, leaf loss and wilting is also observed, which finally results in death of the plant. Camellia is also susceptible to a disease known as 'spot disease', which is also caused by harmful fungi or algae. When the plant gets infected with spot disease; silver spots, scalding or edema appear on the leaves.

Pests like mites and insects feed on the juices present in the buds of Camellia. The most common pests that thrive on camellia are spider mites, aphids and mealybugs. Beetles, like rose beetles and Japanese beetles also damage the leaves of Camellia. Infestation of pests on Camellia result in stunted growth, complete defoliation or even death.

Camellia Plant Care

There are several things that a person needs to take into consideration when planting Camellia. One of the biggest advantage of Camellia is that they grow well when planted at any time of the year in semi-shaded areas. One just needs to prevent frost from gathering on them during winter. Regular and adequate watering and a little fertilization helps the plant to grow well. One also needs to keep a check on pest infestation and undertake regular pest control to prevent the above mentioned Camellia plant diseases. Similarly, pruning should be done only on young plants and in the month of May or June, as it helps in controlling diseases. Read more on gardening.

With more than 100 varieties known, at least one of the species of Camellia is definitely a favorite among cultivators. For others, I hope the above Camellia plant facts were helpful in helping you know more about this beautiful flowering plant.

Growing Camellias

  •         In the southeast, most Camellias prefer part-shade, but this does mean some sun, if possible.  Total shade will result in lack of bud formation in some varieties.

  •        When planting improve your soil with plenty of moss peat or other humus and a general fertilizer such as fish, blood and bone.  Most pot grown Camellias are grown in peat and bark, so before planting thoroughly tease out the roots and surround the root ball with peat and gradually grade this out until you reach your own garden soil.  This helps the transition of the roots from peat to garden soil.  Never plant deeper than the existing level, just mulch annually with humus, leaves and bracken.

  •   On heavy clay, a raised bed can help, say 3 or 4 feet square(1-1.5 sq metres) and 1.5 to 2 feet deep(0.5-0.75 metres), half above soil level and the top surrounded by a small wall of brick, logs or sleepers etc.

  • On chalk construct a raised bed about 2 feet deep (0.75 metres), sealed from the natural soil by heavy plastic (punctured here and there for drainage) before filling with ericaceous compost.

  • Autumn flowering camellias will tolerate a more alkaline soil and require more sun to help them flower.

Camellias in containers

  • For plants in containers use a mix of 2/3 moss peat and 1/3 bark.  Alternatively use one of the many branded ericaceous composts on the market.  Add a general fertiliser such as fish, blood and bone meal.  Repot when necessary into larger pots, remembering to maintain the planting level.  Large plants can flower profusely for many years in a 25 litre pot if properly fed and watered.

Feeding and Watering

  • Camellias require some feeding.  A basic of fish, blood and bone meal in spring and a nitrogen feed in April and then repeat in June.  Regular watering with phostrogen for acid loving plants is also effective.  Always use fertilizers in accordance with the manufacturers instructions and do not overfeed.

  • Camellias in containers must not be allowed to dry out in the summer months.  However those in the open ground should only be watered in times of drought.

Indoors

  • Camellias do not thrive in central heating.  However in a cool porch or conservatory they can be a real winter pleasure.  After flowering they can stay where they are or be planted in the garden or containers outdoors.

  • Picked Camellia flowers will float in water for days.

Outdoors

  • There are Camellias suitable for almost every place and aspect.  They make wonderful hedges which can be formally clipped or informally pruned.  They are highly successful against walls facing any direction.  Some varieties which make long growths can be trained against walls, fences and between windows.  Some varieties which grow tall, but not wide are useful where space is short.

Hygiene

  • Be sure to clear away and dispose of fallen petals and leaves.  They should not be composted.
