you can use the  thinking hats in any situation - work, family, relationship etc.  You apply different hat or combination of hats when dealing with different scenarios.  my late mum use to practice this method when dealing with me and my " issues" during my boarding school days.  She has cue cards with notes on each hat, and after listening to my complaints, she would refer to her cue cards before giving her advise or continuing her conversation with me. she definitely used this at work with her subordinates and bosses as well.
