As usual.... I'm very poor at keeping my promise... just like new year's resolutions ...before the first month is out I break every one of them....
I promised to reread AlQuran translation and finish the Travel of Ibn Jubyr...that was on the first of ramadhan...now it's half way gone and I've not even started any of these yet...the blame this time goes to "Life of Pi" the 2002 booker prize winner by Yann Martel....the moment I read the first few pages I got hooked.... the improbable adventure of 16 yr old tamil boy from Pondicherri Piscine Molitor Patel aka 'Pissing Patel' or as he wanted to be called Pi as in 3.014 who professed to three religions (Islam, christianity & hinduism) , ship wrecked in the middle of pacific ocean and bopping on a lifeboat with only a ferocious bengal tiger for a company is simply irresistible...may be it is not so inappropriate to read this novel in this holy month as the first part of the book is very much philosophical and the way he came to be muslim christian hindu is downright hilarious....
...and now that I've finished reading this novel i can get back to my original resolution right?...wrong...... for the past few days I 've been reading another travel book "Trans Siberia:Inside the grey area " by Paddy Linehan and the first 20 pages or so of a biography of Artatuk. (Ataturk by Patrick Kinross)....Trans siberia is not a terribly good book but the subject matter is very interesting whilst Artatuk is a very good book but about a man I despise...looks like my original intention is going to fail...but there's another 15 days to go before Ramadhan is gone and i still have time to keep my promise....it's hard but I'll try. It's said that satan is kept on a a leash in this holy month but seems like mine is tied on a very long rope..... |

Ramadhan ni seperti tahun2 sudah .saya cuba untuk menghatamkan 30 Juzuk Al-Quran.....masih terkial2 tapi tak pa kalau tak habis akan saya sambung selepas Ramadhn, seperti selalu...di samping mengulang baca koleksi buku2 Allahyarham bapa yang dikasihi..Hamyhaireen, I suggest u try Ihya' Ulumuddin - Keadjaiban Hati...my copy is a translation by Nurhickmah of Indonesia..dan Hidup Sesudah Mati by Bey Ariffin...
Besides these..I continue surfing my favorite websites like Islam Online, Islamicity,Al-Ihram-..I like to read about converts to Islam...bagaimana mereka dibuka hijab dan di beri hidayah oleh Allah...My fav.articles are the ones by Nuh Ha-Mim Keller, Yusuf Islam, Prof Jeffrey Lang, Michael Young, Michael Wolfe and many more.... |

it's already the 9th day of ramadhan, insya' Allah
i am trying to read al-Quran, as of current, tak berjaya sgt.. shame on me.. i just sempat baca selected surahs like al-mulk.. (due to preparing berbuka puasa meal and 2 kids tagging along <-alasan-alasan)
but have just finished mitch albom's "tuesdays with morrie", good motivation during Ramadhan..
now starting CS Lewis series - The Chronicles of Narnia..
hmm, what book should i bring back during Raya? |

this year's Ramadhan saya lebih teruk dari tahun lepas!...saya tak baca quran lagi tapi janji pada diri nak complete translation at least by end of the month... (pernah baca translation Marmaduke pikthall dan yusuff ali waktu zaman universiti dulu2...)
buat masa sekarang , baik saya cut and paste apa yg saya tulis comment dalam blog bioliobibuli...

don't know what the term is for the curiosity about what strangers read in private...
like most of you i'm reading several books at the same time and as such find it mightily difficult to finish one till the end as i keep jumping from one to the next...
anyway here are some of my 'active' list of books i'm currently reading
1) Nothing but you: Love stories from the New yorker (ed Roger Angell)
2)Crabwalk - Gunther Grass
3) Shadow on the hudson -isaac beshevis singer
4)The Orientalist - Tom Reiss (Bio/hisstory)
5) Miller's Crossing (screenplay by Joel & Ethan Coen)
6) Haunted -chuck palahniuk (mainly because i saw his bbc interview recently)
7) Granta vol 84 "Over there" How America sees the world
8) Jihad - Ahmad Rashid
9) Bin Laden - The man who declared war on America - Yossef Bodansky
by the way...some guy in the furious blog discussion in the guardian newspaper recently ( related to a mozart opera that was cancelled probaby for fear of islamic ire due to inclusion of a scene where prophet mohamed's -and jesus', and buddha's and poseidon's heads were cut ...)
referred to syariah's laws as "sharon's law or whatever"...i thought that was ignorant of him but very funny.... |
