Service jer and bukan OS baru... explanation paling basic untuk benda ni is dia tu storage space untuk semua PC2 kat rumah... instead of ko kena gi shared folder setiap PC untuk dapatkan files, dengan adanya 'server' ni, ko gi setempat jer... and boleh setkan dia untuk buat backups files yang stored situ.

Is it hard to set up?

No. Windows Home Server is easy to set up and configure from any PC in the house, using the Windows Home Server Console. You will need to simply plug in the power and connect Windows Home Server to the broadband router, and then install the Windows Home Server Connector software from a CD onto each PC you wish to automatically backup every night to your home server.

How can I access my files when I'm not at home?

You can access Windows Home Server and your home PCs through a personalized Windows Live Internet address that you choose. That means with a simple log in to your family Web site, you can access your photos, music files, and videos from anywhere. Windows Home Server not only enables you to upload and download files stored on your home server but also allows you to connect remotely and use your home computers as if you were sitting in front of them.

Is it easy to control who has access to specific files and folders?

More than just storage, Windows Home Server uniquely provides pre-defined shared folders, such as "Music" or "Photos" making it easier to organize and find your files. Windows Home Server also features simple storage extensibility, and built-in search capabilities.

New internal or external hard drives can be easily added to a Windows Home Server device. The amount of available storage grows based on the size of the hard disk. You no longer have to worry about D:, E:, F:, G:, H:, etc. drives as you add more hard drives. New hard drives can be of any size.

Also, in a Windows Home Server device with two or more hard drives, you can elect to duplicate folders. This prevents you from losing any photos, music, or other files stored in a folder that has "duplication" enabled, if a hard drive fails.

            Home Server Console main page                               The server itself (which you'll need to purchase from HP,Gateway, and others if you want the software, since it won't be soldseparately) doesn't need a monitor, a mouse, or a keyboard. Instead,you simply plug it into your network and install the Home ServerConsole software on a PC on the same network. From the Consolesoftware, you can manage the access settings for all of your variousPCs and users.

Back it up Data protection is a key feature of Windows Home Server. You canautomatically back up each client PC on your network daily, or howeveroften you'd like. Home Server is smart enough to only back up filesthat have changed from day-to-day, saving you storage space. You canalso set it to perform redundant backups if your server has multiplehard drives. That way if one server hard drive fails, you won't loseyour most important data.

Manage your users On the User Accounts page, you can set permissions for various users(up to 10, and one guest). Among other settings, you can determine whohas access to the shared folders on your network, and what they can andcan't do with the files you have stored there.

Keep your shared folders organized Home Server's shared folders work like any other folder on your PC,only you can access them from anywhere, including over the Web. Thatgives you full read-and-write capability to your entire media libraryfrom any PC connected to the Internet. The concept might not be thatdifferent from an FTP server, but it's much more user-friendly.

Easily expandable storage One of the highlights of Home Server is the simplicity with which itlets you expand your server's storage space. You can always add aninternal drive or two, but it also recognizes external USB or FireWiredrives on the fly.

Get to your files remotely Setting up your server for remote access is simple, and a recent updatethe Home Server preview code added this configuration screen. Here, youcan set up the Web address you'll use to get to your server, and freeup ports on your home network to allow outside access.

Easy to use Web interface Once you establish remote access, you can use a Web browser to get tothe Home Server Console, move files to and from shared folders, andeven use Windows Remote Desktop features on the XP Pro or VistaUltimate PCs on your network.

windows home server ni, a strip down version of windows 2003. if you tested its initial beta release, you'll see windows 2003 logo and name all over the place. it's also not customizable as it will determine the partition for your storage. i believe, the latest beta release fixed that.

however, if you want more flexibility, get windows 2003 as windows home server is really for regular users who wants to setup a storage server but don't want to deal with its ins and outs too much.
