29 Oct – Prolific director Mamat Khalid is striving towards a new direction, as the Malaysian Film Festival 2008 (FFM 21) Best Director announced another breaking news with "Kelip-Kelip", an ambitious step into a 3D-animation which is due to begin early next year.

It will be a joint effort with co-director Ramlan Sulong from Digilogic Sdn Bhd where Ramlan will oversee the animation and technical aspects and Mamat on the other hand will conceptualise the movie.

According to studio Naga VXS, the estimated high cost of the project (running north of RM 9 million) leaves them with no option but to seek financial aid from various bodies, including the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI). The project has been forwarded to the ministry together with a mock-up trailer of the animation.

Inspired by the famous Kampung Kuantan fireflies in Kuala Selangor, "Kelip-Kelip" will chronicle the adventures of a bug society from that area. Ramlan added that the mega project should be comparable to some of Hollywood's major animation movies like "A Bug's Life", "Bee's Movie" and "Antz".

To add to the surprise, Malaysia's favourite songbird Datuk Siti Nurhaliza is likely to take up one of the main roles in the animation, despite rejecting KRU's offer to play Puteri Gunung Tahan in their upcoming musical "Magica". The songstress is said to be keen to play a bug queen in Mamat's "Kelip Kelip", lending her golden voice as Cik Siti in the 90-minute animation.

Aside from Siti, Mamat has also short-listed some big local stars like Rosyam Nor, Saiful Apek and Shoffi Jikan among others to play seven main characters.
