John Steinbeck revisited.



John Steinbeck (1902-1968), born in Salinas, California, came from a family of moderate means. He worked his way through college atStanford University but never graduated. In 1925 he went to New York,where he tried for a few years to establish himself as a free-lance  writer, but he failed and returned to California. After publishing  some novels and short stories, Steinbeck first became widely known with Tortilla Flat (1935), a series of humorous stories about Monterey paisanos.

East of Eden, locales Salina Valley, California sound familiar to me. To anyone who has visited and knows the area, the book  description of the region is profoundly authentic. I lived in the region way back in 1984. Steinbeck brilliant work describes the area very well- the geography, the climate, the soil, the wind, the people and the history of the area. This draw me to revisit the book. I savor Steinbeck's skill in the narration and observation about the place.

Saya menangis  bila anaknya Coyotito mati tertembak.
Sia -sia usaha ayahnya mempertahankn mutiara tersebut selama ini.

Tortilla Flat (1935) ada titik bermulanya ketokohan Steinbeck dalam dunia literati. Menerima anugrah "  California Commonwealth Club's Gold Medal"bagi novel terbaik terbitan anak watan kelahiran California. Beliau terus berkarya. Bahan cerita adalah hasil kajian mendalam tentang keadaan hidup manusia dimasa itu. Ini munkin dianggap bukan luar biasa tetapi cara penyampaian sungguh articulated dan versatile.  The Grapes of Wrath (1939) memenangi  the Pulitzer Prize. Perang Dunia Kedua Steinbeck menjadi wartawan untuk  New York Herald Tribune. Hasil penulisan medan perang dibuku dalam Once There Was a War. John Steinbeck dianugrah Nobel Prize for Literature in 1962 ...untuk karya yang dianggap realistik, imaginatif dan " distinguished by a sympathetic humor and a keen social perception". Selama hayatnya ia hidup sabagai warga yang menghargai privicy tanpa publisiti. Meniggal pada bulan December 20,1968 di New York. Hari in abu jasadnya di semadikan di Garden of Memories Cemetery  Salinas.

Craver

For me his best novel is "Of Mice and Men". Very touching story.
