Rectal bleeding in cats may or may not be serious---a lot depends on the cause. Many ailments can cause rectal bleeding in cats. Your veterinarian should be able to determine the cause through examining the cat or conducting blood and stool tests.
Types
1. Both temporary and chronic ailments can cause rectal bleeding in cats. Fecal impaction, constipation, and diarrhea, are the most common causes of rectal bleeding.
Other conditions, such as anal sac infection, parasites, and poisoning can mimic rectal bleeding. In these conditions, the blood seen on the rectum is coming from the intestines or the infected anal sacs, rather than the rectum.
Rectal cancer, which is serious but rare, is another possible cause of rectal bleeding.
Identification
2. If your cat has rectal bleeding, you may notice blood on the fur around the rectum or blood on the feces. Often what appears to be rectal bleeding is actually bleeding from inside the colon.
If blood is inside the feces, instead of on the outside only, bleeding is coming from the colon rather than the rectum. If the cat has diarrhea, it will be difficult to tell if blood in feces is coming from the rectum or from the colon. You can look at the rectal area, but the presence of blood, or even rectal sores or tears, does not mean the sole source is rectal.
Bright red blood indicates fresh bleeding. If you see darker blood, blood clots, or crumbly looking blood in the feces, you should suspect intestinal bleeding.
Blood accompanied by pus signals infection. The infection may be intestinal but usually signals impacted or infected anal glands---two glands on either side of the anus. Cats with infected anal glands may lick the area frequently.
Prevention/Solution
3. Most cases of rectal bleeding require veterinary care. At the least, if constipation or diarrhea is the sole cause of the bleeding, the veterinarian can recommend dietary changes or prescribe medicines to help the cat's bowels.
Warning
4. Since serious conditions can cause rectal bleeding, you should always bring a cat into a veterinarian if the cat has signs of bleeding. If rectal bleeding is caused by poisoning or a foreign object, the cat will need emergency care.
Effects
5. Unless severe or prolonged bleeding occurs, rectal bleeding alone (in the absence of disease or poisoning) is not usually life threatening. However, chronic rectal bleeding causes anemia. Additionally, harmful bacteria easily invade open wounds found in or near the rectum; therefore, infection is likely, and can be serious.
Considerations
6. Only veterinarians can accurately diagnosis the cause of rectal bleeding in your cat. You should not try to diagnose the cat at home. If your cat has bloody diarrhea or more than just a few spots of blood on her rectum, you should contact a veterinarian as soon as possible. Some poisons cause internal hemorrhaging. The sooner you get your cat treatment for poisoning, the better the prognosis.
