What is Tongue Diagnosis in Traditional Chinese Medicine?
Tongue diagnosis is an essential part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). When looking at a tongue, a Chinese Medicine Practitioner/Acupuncturist will examine the colour, size, shape, colour of the coating and thickness.
Different tongues reveal not only the overall state of ones health, but also reveal specific organ functions and disharmony, especially in the digestive system.
When assessing a tongue, a Practitioner must be made aware of one’s diet and health history, as certain foods and medications can change tongue coating colour (Pepto-Bismol, can change tongue coating colour to brown/black)
Although tongue diagnosis is fundamental in TCM diagnosis, it is not the only indicator for diagnosis. Tongue diagnosis is used in combination with pulse diagnosis. These evaluations in combination can offer strong clues to the location of organ disharmony, for an effective treatment plan.
