Verdict expected in blasphemy case against Jakarta's Christian governor

JAKARTA (Reuters) - An Indonesian court has found Jakarta's Christian governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama guilty of blasphemy against Islam and sentenced him to two years in jail, a judge said on Tuesday.

Purnama was "found to have legitimately and convincingly conducted a criminal act of blasphemy, and because of that we have imposed two years of imprisonment," head judge Dwiarso Budi Santiarto told the court.

The trial has been widely seen as a test of religious tolerance in the world's largest Muslim-majority nation.

[size=1.2]In April, prosecutors called for the blasphemy counts to be dropped in exchange for a lesser charge of "spreading hate," but the judges appear to have ignored that recommendation.
[size=1.2]The controversial Chinese Christian politician was put on trial in December over accusations that he insulted Islam while campaigning to retain his role. The Jakarta governor denied the charges.
[size=1.2]Almost no one who has been charged under the blasphemy law has ever escaped conviction, associate professor of Indonesian politics at the Australian National University Greg Fealy told CNN.
[size=1.2]"The blasphemy law has really been a blight on the rule of law and democracy in Indonesia for decades," he said, adding that "the fact that Ahok was charged at all was really a product of massive street demonstrations that frightened the government into acting."
[size=1.2]In November, Ahok quoted a verse from the Quran to prove to his supporters that there were no restrictions on Muslims voting for a non-Muslim politician.
[size=1.2]Since an edited video of his remarks was released, hundreds of thousands of Muslim Indonesians protested against him on the streets of Jakarta, with many calling for his jailing.

Pantauan detikcom di Jalan RM Harsono, Ragunan, Jakarta Selatan, Selasa (9/5/2017), massa awalnya terlihat joget poco-poco saat pembacaan berkas putusan kasus Ahok.

Vonis 2 Tahun Bui, Hakim Sebut Ahok Tidak Hati-hati

Jakarta - Gubernur DKI Jakarta Basuki Tjahaja Purnama (Ahok) dihukum 2 tahun penjara karena terbukti melakukan penodaan agama. Ahok disebut tidak berhati-hati terkait dengan penyebutan Surat Al-Maidah saat bertemu dengan warga di Kepulauan Seribu.


"Terdakwa sebagai orang beragama, apalagi ingin menyebut simbol keagamaan di depan umum, seharusnya terdakwa berhati-hati dan harus menghindari penggunaan kata konotasi negatif yang bersifat merendahkan, melecehkan, atau menghina simbol keagamaan tertentu, baik itu agama lain maupun agama terdakwa sendiri. Karena hal itu bisa menimbulkan keresahan kalangan umat beragama, kecuali kajian ilmiah terbatas," ujar hakim membacakan pertimbangan hukum dalam sidang vonis Ahok di auditorium Kementan, Jl RM Harsono, Ragunan, Jakarta Selatan, Selasa (9/5/2017).

When we as Muslims failed in our quest to convince the non believers of the truth of Islam, we put them under the blasphemy charge, only because they don't understand about the religion....

If they as a non muslim do not understand well about the intrepretation of any surah,they should consult the Ustaz or a Muslim scholar to better known about it. He cannot intreprate it accoding his own logical thinking. AlQuran is a Firman of Allah and man cannot understand it by his own logical thinking. It must be intreprate by Islamic scholars who has a knowledge what is the surah and ayat means.
If anybody can suka suki intreprate that it will be a misunderstands amongs the muslim and non muslim and it will become a chaos in community and states.
It was a good lessons indeed that nobody especially non muslim do not use alQuran as a their points to influence people if they NOT understand it.
In contrary what happen if a muslim doing the same way by misintrepeted and harass other religious. Maybe he will face a same conviction

Merdeka.com - Para pendukung Ahok masih bertahan di luar Rutan Cipinang,Jakarta Timur, menuntut bisa bertemu dengan Ahok. Mereka pun marah saat polisi bilang Ahok tak bisa menemui mereka.


Pantauan merdeka.com, saat Kapolres mengatakan bahwa Ahok tidak bisa keluar untuk ketemu, maka serempak Ahokers langsung menyoraki Kapolres.

"Hhhuuuuu, bohong, bohong, bilang aja enggak dikasih keluar," sorak Ahokers.
