Federer Puts on Another Virtuoso Display
by Brian Cleary
Friday, September 2, 2005

In front of nearly-packed house of highly appreciative tennis fans in Arthur Ashe Stadium, Roger Federer put on yet another virtuoso display of all-court tennis, taking out a pesky Fabrice Santoro of France 7-5, 7-5, 7-6. The No. 1-ranked Federer has now only lost one set in his last nine Grand Slam matches.

While Federer seemed mostly in control, despite the close score, the 32-year-old Frenchman, who hits two-fisted off both sides, tested him throughout. He had three break points on Federer’s serve in the all-important seventh game of the second set, only to see Federer pick up his game to fend them off, hitting two forehand winners in the process.

Santoro, ranked No. 76 and playing in his 14th US Open, clearly had the crowd on his side. But siding with Santoro wasn't because the New York fans did not like Federer. In fact, they were highly appreciative of his marvelous shot-making, clearly aware that the Swiss champion, being talked about routinely as the greatest player ever, is the best show in town right now. At one point, the crowd was so excited, they started doing the wave.

If anything, it seemed like the crowd, sensing Santoro’s insurmountable task, felt even a little sorry for the Frenchman. They moaned when close balls hit by Santoro were called out, prompting Federer to raise his arms at one point, as if to say, “What can I do?’’ After another great shot by Federer, one fan called out, “Hang in there, Santoro.’’

Federer, who hit an amazing 73 winners on the night, compared to just 29 by Santoro, continues his quest to become the first man in the Open Era to win Wimbledon and the US Open back-to-back for two consecutive years. He next plays the No. 27-seeded Olivier Rochus of Belgium

In Her Biggest Test Yet, Sharapova Passes
by Erin Bruehl
Friday, September 2, 2005

Heading into her third round matchup with Julia Schruff of Germany, No. 1 seed Maria Sharapova had dropped only three games total in her previous two matches and spent just an hour and 55 minutes on the court. Schruff, ranked No. 87 in the world, took six games from the Russian and pushed the match to an hour and three minutes but Sharapova still prevailed in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4 in Arthur Ashe Stadium.

With the victory, Sharapova, ranked No. 2 in the world, advances to the fourth round of the US Open for the first time in her career after losses in the second and third rounds in 2003 and 2004, respectively.

Sharapova dominated early with her powerful serve, breaking Schruff in the second game and went up three games to love in just five minutes. The two stayed on serve through the seventh game before Sharapova broke Schruff again in the eighth game to take the set in just 21 minutes. However, Schruff's two game wins were the most any opponent had taken yet from Sharapova in the Open.

Sharapova feasted on Schruff's second serve throughout the first set and much of the match, as Schruff had just a 33 percent winning percentage on her second serve and just 35 percent for the match. She also had nine unforced errors in the first to just four for Sharapova.

In the break between sets, Schruff required a medical timeout to have her left thigh wrapped. It did not seem to affect her in the second set, however, as she gave Sharapova her biggest test yet, breaking her for the first time in the seventh game with a great drop shot and a few unforced errors from Sharapova to pull to 4-3. She then held  to tie it at 4-4.

Sharapova then held her serve to move to 5-4 and broke Schruff in the final game to take the match. For the match, Sharapova had an 81 percent winning percentage on her first serve to just 57 percent for Schruff as the German consistently could not catch up to the Russian's powerful serve — hitting balls long and wide or into the net. Sharapova also scored 21 winners to just nine for Schruff.

Sharapova will now face Sania Mirza of India in the fourth round.

Awesome Agassi Resurges, Bests Blake In Five
by Erin Gell
Wednesday, September 7, 2005

They say it ain’t over until it’s over. And this one wouldn’t be over until after 1 a.m. Tonight’s epic match between Andre Agassi and James Blake needed all five sets and then some before Agassi took the win.

The all-American quarterfinal left fans debating which way to throw their support. Either way, the anticipated match-up promised to be an impressive contest. But Blake had a different plan. Right out of the gate, "The Harvard Guy" was hitting confidently, barely allowing Agassi room to breathe as he sealed the first set, 6-3.

"I was real frustrated," Agassi said. "[Blake] started off letting a few balls fly. I actually liked the way I was hitting the ball when we started the match. I liked the way I was feeling, got comfortable. But he let a few second-serve returns fly. Then he started swinging for the fences. I sort of overreacted to that by picking up the pace of my ball too much. I lost my rhythm and started missing a lot."

Blake, who missed the Open last year after being sidelined with injuries, wouldn’t let up and jumped to a 4-1 lead in the second set. Much of the crowd who stood solidly with Blake during the earlier rounds began to rally behind Agassi who had to save three break points just to hold serve in the next game. For a second, it seemed as if he would break back and have a chance at getting back into the set, but it wasn’t to be—at least not yet.

Blake continued to serve well in the third set, producing ace after ace. He pulled out some unbelievable shots, zooming from corner to corner to return Agassi’s balls, and really forcing the older man to fight to keep himself in the game. Agassi went down a break at 2-3, but resurged to win the next two games. By taking advantage of Blake’s increasing double faults and scoring some down-the-line winners, Agassi forced a fourth set.

Champions like Agassi specialize in finding a way back into seemingly impossible matches, and once into the fourth, he seemed to gain confidence and move a lot better against a flagging Blake. Agassi came through to go up an early break. It seemed that the ball had moved, quite literally, into Agassi’s court. The previously stoic Blake let loose a roar of frustration as he lost his serve and the rejuvenated veteran went on to break to send the match into a fifth set that would have seemed improbable just half an hour before.

Blake managed to rechannel some of his early energy to pull ahead in the final set. But Agassi had a few more tricks up his sleeve, and pushed a fifth-set tiebreak. Filled with clean winners, each point was played out to the fullest. There didn’t seem to be a shot that wasn’t a battle. Up 6-5 in the tiebreak, Blake actually had a match point, but just a few moments later, it would be Andre Agassi who emerged victorious before the animated crowd.

"I don't know if I can put in context how this compares with some of my greatest experience on the tennis court, but I know it's right up there because this is what you work so hard for, you know," Agassi said.  "To be honest, with the way a mentality like mine sort of works, is this means as much to me as doing it in the finals. This is what it's about. It's about just authentic competition, just getting out there and having respect for each other's game and respect for each other's person and letting it fly and letting it be just about tennis."

Agassi will come up against another fellow American, Robby Ginepri, in the semifinals.

Match Statistics

  Andre Agassi USA (7)   3 3 6 6 78

  James Blake USA     6 6 3 3 66

-  James Blake served up a whopping 19 aces in the match.

-  Blake has beaten Agassi just once in their five meetings. He dubbed that 2002 victory the best win of his career.

-  This was Blake's first Grand Slam quarterfinal.

-  At 35, Agassi is a full decade older than Blake.

-  Agassi finished second to Andy Roddick in the US Open Series and will therefore increase his winnings here by 50 percent

At last.....I found this topic. I thought no one likes tennis in Malaysia.

For men I like just about every player accept Federer. I know and do admit that he is very good but it's kind of boring coz "asyik-asyik dia menang".
But my favourites is nadal and safin. Coria is cool too.

For women eventhough I like to see and watch sharapova play, I don't like to see her win and I'm glad that Kim beat her in the U.S open semifinal. But as
much as I don't like sharapova, I don't like Sania Mirza even more. I don't know why. Other cool players is justin, kim, pierce and dementieva [ look very
sweet in her outfit ].

Actually I'm quite new in tennis. I just started playing since last year. So I'm kind of looking for any club or places where you all tennis player go to play
tennis that I can join.

Thanks.
