Jane Green was a disaster at University, discoveredwriting soon afterwards, and went on to work as a journalist throughouther twenties, for various national newspapers and magazines in her hometown of London. At twenty seven, inspired by Nick Hornby抯 High Fidelity, she decided to give up her job on the Daily Express, and write a real woman抯 account of what it was like being single in the city.
Luckily it paid off. Three months later she signed her first publishing deal, and Straight Talking, her (allegedly) largely-autobiographical first novel, became a huge bestseller and together with Bridget Jones抯 Diary launched the phenomenon that came to be known as 慶hick lit |

Jemima J: A Novel About Ugly Ducklings and Swans (2000)
Jemima Jones is overweight. About one hundred pounds overweight. Treated like a maid by her thin and social-climbing roommates, and lorded over by the beautiful Geraldine (less talented but better paid) at the Kilburn Herald, Jemima finds that her only consolation is food. Add to this her passion for her charming, sexy, and unobtainable colleague Ben, and Jemima knows her life is in need of a serious change. When she meets Brad, an eligible California hunk, over the Internet, she has the perfect opportunity to reinvent herself -- as JJ, the slim, beautiful, gym-obsessed glamour girl. But when her long-distance Romeo demands that they meet, she must conquer her food addiction to become the bone-thin model of her e-mails -- no small feat.
With a fast-paced plot that never quits and a surprise ending no reader will see coming, Jemima J is the chronicle of one woman's quest to become the woman she's always wanted to be, learning along the way a host of lessons about attraction, addiction, the meaning of true love, and, ultimately, who she really is.
Reviews for Jemima J: A Novel About Ugly Ducklings and Swans:
"Cleverly probes the world of a very smart, very funny, very fat reporter . . .Americans will enjoy this confection and appreciate how Green renders a certain humor-impaired California earnestness about health, happiness, and love." --USA Today
"A brilliantly funny novel about something close to every woman's heart -- her stomach." --Woman's Own
"The kind of novel you'll gobble up at a single sitting." --Cosmopolitan

Bookends: A Novel (2002)
On the heels of her national bestsellers Jemima J and Mr. Maybe, British sensation Jane Green delivers a sparkling tale of old friends reunited and old jealousies rekindled.
Catherine Warner and Simon Nelson are best friends: total opposites, always together, and both unlucky in love. Cath is scatterbrained, messy, and -- since she had her heart broken a few years back -- emotionally closed off. Si is impossibly tidy, bitchy, and desperate for a man of his own. They live in London抯 West Hampstead along with their lifelong friends, Josh and Lucy, who are happily married with a devil-spawn child and a terrifying Swedish nanny, Ingrid.
All抯 well (sort of) until the sudden arrival of a college friend -- the stunningly beautiful Portia, who抯 known for breaking hearts. Though they抳e grown up and grown apart from Portia, the four friends welcome her back into the fold. But does Portia have a hidden agenda or is she merely looking to reconnect with old friends? Her reappearance soon unleashes a rollicking series of events that tests the foursome抯 friendships to the limit and leaves them wondering if a happy ending is in store.
Fortunately, Cath has plenty to take her mind off Portia抯 schemes -- like her gutsy decision to leave her job in advertising to fulfill her dream of opening a bookstore. And then there抯 James, the sexy real-estate agent who keeps dropping by even after the bookstore deal is done. With his irresistible smile and boyish charm could he be the one to melt Cath抯 heart?
Told with Jane Green抯 captivating wit and flare, Bookends is above all a story about friendship -- its twists, turns and complications朼nd how it weathers the challenges of love, ambition, marriage, and, most of all, growing up. Warmhearted, sophisticated, and full of delicious surprises, Bookends is Green抯 most dazzling novel yet.

"A near-perfect romantic wish-fulfillment fantasy...only the coldest hearts will not be warmed." --Kirkus Reviews
"Single or spoken for, you'll find a character you can relate to in this page-turner about dating, marriage, parenthood, career goals, jealousy and of course love." --iVillage

Straight Talking: A Novel (2003)
Meet Tasha -- single and still searching. A producer for Britain抯 most popular morning show working under a nightmare boss, Tash is well-versed in the trials and tribulations of twenty-first century dating. She and her three best friends certainly haven抰 lived the fairy tale they thought they would: there抯 Andy, who抯 hooked on passion, but too much of a tomboy to have moved much beyond the beer-drinking contest stage; Mel, stuck in a steady but loveless relationship; and Emma, endlessly waiting for her other half to propose. Their love lives are only complicated by the sort of men who seem to drift in and out: Andrew -- suave, good-looking and head over heels in love . . . with himself; Simon, who is allergic to commitment but has a bad-boy nature that抯 impossible to resist; and Adam -- perfectly attractive, but too sweet to be sexy.
The bestselling first novel that launched Jane Green, one of the brightest stars in contemporary women抯 fiction, Straight Talking sets the record straight regarding the real world of dating, and follows the adventures of Tash and her friends as they search for fulfillment and the right kind of love. But when her teenage crush -- the wealthy, dashing man-about-town Joe Chambers -- wants to make her his bride, Alice is more than willing to play Cinderella to Joe抯 prince. The Other Woman: A Novel (june 2006)
Ellie and Dan are living proof that opposites attract. She's impulsive; he follows all the rules. He loves sports; she's allergic to any form of exercise. Ellie doesn't have a mother. Dan does -- a very involved mother.
At first, Ellie is thrilled to be accepted into the loving Cooper clan and have Dan's mom, Linda, as her "adopted" mother. But then Ellie starts to wonder, how has the intimate civil ceremony she always dreamed of turned into a black-tie affair? And what can Dan and his mother possibly have to talk about on the phone twice a day?
Ellie's problems have just begun. When she discovers she's pregnant, she realizes that Linda has only been rehearsing for the real takeover. Linda seems to want to live her life through Ellie and, in the words of the immortal Princess Diana, there are three of them in the marriage.
When a crisis strains family bonds, Ellie turns to her friends -- glamorous Lisa, who always looks like she's just stepped off a runway, and wonderfully frazzled Trish -- and tries to rediscover the independence she once had and the man she still loves. But it seems that having a child and saving a marriage means growing up in ways she'd never imagined.
In The Other Woman, Jane Green delivers a warm, witty, and touching look at mothers-in-law and marriage and what they teach us about ourselves.
Reviews for The Other Woman: A Novel:
"Utterly compulsive" --Company
"A must-read for anyone who's ever experienced over zealous in-laws" --Glamour
"Jane Green is just the perfect chick-lit author. It's a much bandied about term, but this is the purest, distilled version of the genre...we never fail to find ourselves moved -- to hysterical laughter as well as tears -- by Jane Green's heroines. And you can quote us on that' --Heat
"With a style that's conspiratorial, warm and involving, her tale will send a shiver down the spines of brides everywhere" --Mirror
"Another compelling page-turner from start to finish" --Daily Express |

Swapping Lives (2006)
The New York Times bestselling author of The Other Woman returns with a wry tale of two women who discover the grass is not always greener on the other side of the Atlantic
Vicky Townsley is single, solvent, and seriously successful. Features director of the hugely successful Poise! magazine, she has an amazing flat, good friends, a fantastic wardrobe . . . in short, everything梕xcept the life she wants: marriage, children, and a house in the country.
On the other side of the Atlantic, Amber Winslow has a stone mansion in Connecticut, two kids (and a full-time nanny), the requisite golden retriever, and a busy charitable commitment for the local Women's League. But she hasn't quite found the fulfillment she had expected from being a wife and mother. When she spots an intriguing contest in Poise!, Amber never expects to be picked.
Swapping Lives is a riotous and poignant look at what happens when two women, both of whom think their bliss lies elsewhere, walk in each other's shoes for a month only to discover that happiness is closer than they'd ever thought. A rich, clever, and sharply observed chronicle of the true lives of women, Swapping Lives is a must read for the modern mademoiselle that will again squarely position Jane Green in a preeminent place in women's fiction.
Reviews for Swapping Lives:
"Green's latest, like her more inspired ventures, is hard to put down, thanks to affable leading characters and interesting, if not particularly revealing, commentary on the cross-Atlantic cultural gap." --Publishers Weekly
". . . enjoy watching Green peel the layers of the women's lives back, highlighting that both women have issues they need to change and others they need to accept. Green is a popular chick-lit writer, so expect demand." --Booklist |
