Australia's energy minister has urged households in New South Wales - a state that includes the country's biggest city Sydney - to switch off their lights in the face of an energy crisis.
Chris Bowen says people should not use electricity for two hours every evening if they "have a choice".
However, he added he was "confident" that blackouts could be avoided.
It comes after Australia's main wholesale electricity market was suspended because of a surge in prices.
Mr Bowen asked people living in New South Wales to conserve as much power as possible.
"If you have a choice about when to run certain items, don't run them from 6 to 8 [in the evening]," he said during a televised media conference in Canberra.
Why is there a crisis?
Australia is one of the world's biggest exporters of coal and liquefied natural gas but has been struggling with a power crisis since last month. Three quarters of the country's electricity is still generated using coal. It has long been accused of not doing enough to cut its emissions by investing in renewables.
In recent weeks, Australia has felt the impact of disruptions to coal supplies, outages at several coal-fired power plants and soaring global energy prices.
Australia signs new carbon emissions target
Flooding earlier this year hit some coal mines in New South Wales and Queensland, while technical issues have cut production at two mines that supply the market's biggest coal-fired station in New South Wales.
Around a quarter of Australia's coal-fired electricity generating capacity is currently out of service due to unexpected outages and scheduled maintenance.
Some electricity producers have seen their costs soar as global coal and gas prices have jumped due to sanctions on Russia over its invasion of Ukraine.
Meanwhile, demand for energy has jumped amid a cold snap and as Australia's economy opens up after Covid-19 restrictions were eased.
All of this has helped drive up power prices on the wholesale market to above the A$300 (£173; $210) per megawatt hour price cap set by the market's regulator, the Australian Energy Market Operator (Aemo).
However, that cap was below the cost of production for several generators, who decided to withhold capacity.

Ini bukan kes crisis energy juga. Dia suspend wholesale market sebab harga tinggi nanti ramai cannot afford power. Kat Australia (and UK et al) bukan satu je monopoly electricity market mcm kat Malaysia ni, dia ada ramai. Wholesale market ni pulak lain operators bid for supply from generators to be competitive and bila bid tinggi the only way is for regulator to intervene ni and put a max price. Sekarang pula tengah winter so lagi la demand for power tinggi. Negeri2 kat nsw ni dan macm melb tak winter pun mmg sejuk. Ini mcm kisah ayam kat negeri kita. Kat sana you tak happy with one supplier of gas ke electric ke u boleh switch mcm tukar phone network melainkan u under contract.
Another way also is to save electricty la tu suggest tak guna letrik for 2 hours. Kat sana during s7mmer pun x boleh siram pokok sesuak hati unless u ada bore water. Basuh kereta lagi lah tau2 je dtg surat saman. |

Ini serupa kata bila nak guna highway plus balik raya, elak waktu sekian2. Bukan kata jangan balik terus.
Macam jalanraya gak, electricity generation ni pun ada peak period dan dorang where possible memang nak minimise load swing. Tak susah sangat pun nak faham.

Dekat sana malam2 mmg rumah masing2 gelap gulita. Kat mana derang ada kat situ je derang buka lampu. Masa mula2 duduk sana dulu mmg mcm pelik semua rumah satu lorong gelap rumah kita je yg meriah. Bila dpt bil letrik baru faham last2 kita pun jadi mcm tu juga. Cuma buka lampu kat luar pintu depan sbb rumah tak xde pagar sometimes budak2 nakal malam2 buat onar. Kat sana ada reverse cycle aircon sbb most houses tak de central heating. Tu yg bila winter apart from the usual heater, letrik consumption mmg high. Kalau x letrik, gas for some heaters |

Sis cerita ini seperti my ex classmate 25..26 years ago... Dalam class weol semua furthur study ke negara barat.... Heshe 1 orang saja parent hantar ke OZ... Dia pernah ke OZ but ke big cities... But dia di hantar di ke perth.. Tempat dia tidak pernah visit.. Memang excited lah kan dia ingat perth seperti melbourne.. Sydney.... Sampai saja ke sana.. Heshe meraung mahu minta tukar kata nya seperti cowboy Town.. Tiada apa selepas 7 or 8 pm... I memang ingat sangat dia call semua kawan minta tolong dia tukar... We ols mampu pity saja sambil hencap lah juga why why why tidak tanya dahulu perth itu bagaimana tempat nya semua no idea tentang perth.. |

Biasa jelah benda ni kat sana.
Dulu kat Melbourne, siap2 bagitau kena save electricity. Tapi yg depa target awal2 area CBD. Jadi merasalah setiap hari kami kena catu (lampu corridor nak ke lif merasalah gelap gulita 2 jam wkt peak hour)
Alhamdulillah, seminggu je area CBD kena catu lps tu ok balik, tu pun wkt peak hour je. |

Eh sis Perth dah catch up dah masa i kat sana mcdonalds dah ada, if not ada red rooster dan hungry jacks je
I left in 2013 dpt la merasa night shopping if not semua tutup at 5, weekends pun tutup. Perth punya motto is family quality time, i suka tapi if given the choice i nak juga duduk kat Qld sbb weather mcm malaysia tapi sejuk cuma hujan selalu so kuat banjir at certain areas |
