FUNICULAR TRAIN SYSTEM DISRUPTION DUE TO TNB POWER SUPPLY FAILURE ON FRIDAY 18 OCTOBER 2013.
Press Release By Penang Hill Corporation(PHC) General Manager Dr Lawrence Khoo On 19th October 2013.
FUNICULAR TRAIN SYSTEM DISRUPTION DUE TO TNB POWER SUPPLY FAILURE ON FRIDAY 18 OCTOBER 2013.
At approximately 7.03pm (time recorded in control room system) on Friday, 18 October 2013 Penang Hill top station experienced TNB power supply failure, which also affects the upper Penang Hill areas. PHC has been informed that this power breakdown also occurred at the Penang International Airport disrupting service. Before total power outage from TNB, we have encounter two time power surge and sag at about 6.30pm this also happen most of parts in Penang.
PHC is proud that the Penang Hill Funicular has recorded zero downtime or any disruption in service since last quarter . This occasion was beyond PHC’s control as the power breakdown was from TNB and we are still trying to get an explanation from TNB.
As part of system backup process, the Penang Hill Funicular System shifted the standby power supply from the generator to continue operation. During the process, the funicular temporarily halted transporting passengers.
With no power supply and the Funicular train halted at the middle, some passengers panicked and started banging, kicking on the door and even tried to break the glass window. This created a chain reaction to other passengers to also panic and started doing the same. The door was forced open and passengers left despite being asked by coach driver to stay calm. Most of the passengers rushed to jump out and walked down on the track near old crossing about 250 meters from lower station. Due to anxiety, one of the passengers had difficulty breathing and did not suffer a heart attack as reported.
Passengers walking on the track stepped on power rails along the way causing power supply to fail to connect to the system. Power failing to connect to the system resulted in the coaches not moving. Even though the coaches can move using Auxiliary Drive, but it is not safe to do so until the passengers walking down the track are totally cleared first. If the passengers had co-operated and not left the coaches, then the train could have started moving in less than 10 minutes. We will look into ways to make sure that the passengers can stay in the coaches comfortably and not force open the doors, causing the entire train system to be inoperative.
Bomba and Ambulance were called to standby at lower station while the victim with breathing difficulty was brought down quickly. Operation staff focused on clearing the track and to get the system up and running again, while at lower station, all available staff worked to calm down visitors, reporters and spectators.
About 200 visitors at upper station were given snacks (biscuits and mineral water) during their waits and managed to be cleared about 10.30pm.
Four passengers were taken by Ambulance to Penang General Hospital. Status received on 19 October morning as follows.
1. Afat Abdul Kahlea – Arab student in UPM
Contact number 016-6569903
He has no problem after check-up.
2. Jamil b Bidin – 57 years old from Kedah
Contact number 013-4638354
Walked out laughing with his family after clearing x-ray and test. Feedback from him is response time very slow. His wife asked for refund or free ride for next morning which PHC granted.
3. Ismayati bt Ismail – 28 years old from BM
No contact. Discharged after checking
4. Zikri Fikri – 6 years old. From Taman Cheras Utama K.L.
No contact. Discharged after checking.
At the point of report, all the four passengers have been discharged from General Hospital. There were no injuries.
