Protest against new lay-by
MORE than 200 Mutiara Damansara residents marched in protest against an MRT station lay-by for buses and taxis in Jalan PJU 7/1, as they fear it will negatively impact the traffic situation in the area.
The protest, organised by the Mutiara Damansara Owners and Residents Association (Mudora), was also attended by residents from nearby properties such as Surian Condominiums and Surian Residences.
The lay-by is currently being constructed by Klang Valley Mass Rapid Transit (KVMRT) contractor MMC-Gamuda, on the left side of Jalan PJU 7/1 (coming in from Persiaran Surian) in between the Persiaran Surian and Jalan PJU 7/7 intersections.
Mudora president Lee Lam Tat said the lay-by, measuring 125m in length, would be able to accommodate a bus, three taxis and three cars.
It was initially supposed to be built underneath the upcoming Curve Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) station along Persiaran Surian.
“The stretch of Jalan PJU 7/1 where MRT Corp wants to construct the lay-by is only 200m and already has traffic lights at either intersection,” he said.
Lee claimed the new sites for the lay-by were not made known to Mutiara Damansara residents and construction began without the residents being consulted.
He added that Jalan PJU 7/1 was already congested with traffic because it was a popular alternative route to Damansara Perdana, Mont Kiara, and the Kota Damansara and Sungai Buloh.
Many residents said it could take up to 30 minutes just to get out to Persiaran Surian from Jalan PJU 7/7.
“We are not against development and are in fact very happy that the MRT station is being built in the area.
“It is just that traffic here is already very bad and knowing Malaysians, the lay-by will see people double-parking and reducing a two-lane road into one-lane,” said Lee.
This would not only worsen the traffic situation, but also pose safety risks to pedestrians, he added.
A Mudora task force has collected over 1,000 signatures, petitioning MRT Corp to return the lay-by to the alleged original plan.
Subang MP R. Sivarasa, who also present during the march, said he would discuss the matter with Bukit Lanjan assemblyman Elizabeth Wong.
In a statement, MRT Corp said it had obtained approval for the station’s design, together with its entrance and lay-bys from both the federal and state governments.
The statement said the lay-by was built for commuters entering the future MRT station via “Entrance C”, that links to the lay-by via an elevated, covered pedestrian walkway.
Both the location and design of lay-bys for the MRT station were decided after a traffic study, that showed that Jalan PJU 7/1 had relatively low traffic compared to other main roads in the area.
MRT Corp stated that Entrance C and the lay-bys were being constructed on government reserve land that had been approved for the MRT project and that it had engaged Mudora on the design from September 2012 until February this year

MRT perjelas reka bentuk pintu masuk Stesen The Curve
close

DASH too close for comfort
Writer: Basil Foo
Published: Fri, 13 Jan 2012
PETALING JAYA: Anger against the proposed Damansara-Shah Alam Highway (DASH) was clearly seen when some 800 Mutiara Damansara residents held a protest last Saturday (Jan 7).
“We don’t want the highway to cut through Mutiara Damansara,” said Mutiara Damansara Owners and Resident’s Association (Mudora) president Tony Chung.
He led an irate group of residents from all ages on a two-kilometer walk along Jalan PJU 7/7 and 7/1 to vent their frustration at the proposed highway.
The proposed 17-metre tall elevated highway will run along Jalan PJU 7/7 and 7/1 and will be operated by concessionaire Projek Lintasan Kota Holdings Sdn Bhd (Prolintas).
Chung, who has stayed in the suburb for six years, said the construction of the highway here will inconvenience residents and destroy trees.
Mutiara Damansara residents protesting against the proposed DASH highway along Jalan PJU 7/7 on Saturday (Jan 7).
“Traffic congestion from the project will affect 2,000 landed properties, two condominiums and the Curve commercial area here,” he said.
Resident Kuan Chong Mei said she was worried about the air pollution from the highway as she suffers from asthma.
The 58-year-old former headmistress said the highway, which will be built just 50 metres away from her house in Mutiara Damansara Zone A, was too close for comfort.
“The traffic noise will cause me sleepless nights as the highway is very close to our housing area,” she said.
Resident Selvi Ebinesan, who moved into Zone C with her husband Daniel Ebinesan five years ago, said she was caught unaware by the proposed project.
The senior citizen in her 60s is worried for the safety of her nephews and nieces who will no longer be able to walk about the neighbourhood due to the increased traffic once the highway is completed.
“If I had known the highway would be here, I would not have bought this house,” she said.
“It is ridiculous to have a highway in an existing housing area, especially a matured residential area like this,” added long time resident Ong CH.
Mudora committee member Datuk Aminuddin Ariffin said to avoid massive traffic jams and pollution, alternative routes for the highway should be considered.
Also present was state executive councillor Elizabeth Wong who said while the Federal government approved the project, the state remains undecided.
“This project is not easy to approve. We will have to change the local plan and the Selangor structure plan,” she said.
Wong, who is also the Bukit Lanjan state assemblyperson, said she understood the residents’ grouses and agreed that the highway should be moved elsewhere.
She said the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) has been told to conduct a technical assessment to determine if the highway project is feasible.
“During a state executive council meeting, Menteri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim also did not approve the highway and asked for the residents to be consulted first,” she added.
