Bananas and Constipation: Should You Eat Them if You're Prone to Constipation? Because of the "dual" effects of bananas on the intestines, it's best to eat them in moderation if you're prone to constipation. They probably won't cause a slow-down in bowel movements unless you eat green bananas in large amounts. On the other hand, there are better fruits for relieving constipation such as prunes, figs, apricots, pears, and peaches. Try eating some of these fruits in place of some of the bananas you normally eat - if you want to keep your bowels moving. Be sure to drink lots of liquids if you're prone to constipation. Dehydration will only make the symptoms worse. Do Bananas Cause Constipation: The Bottom Line? If you're prone to constipation, there's no need to completely give up bananas. It's okay to eat ripe bananas in moderation along with other high-fiber fruits - and follow up by drinking more liquids. Bananas are one of the best sources of potassium, and it's the plant food highest in vitamin B6. This tasty tropical fruit is a good source of energy - and it makes a great tasting smoothie thicker and even more delicious. Enjoy bananas, but do so in moderation.
