X Japan planning move to U.S.

Speaking at an event in Tokyo for his jewelry brand's latest collection, X Japan leader Yoshiki made an unexpected announcement. When guitarist SUGIZO appeared on stage as a surprise guest, Yoshiki revealed that the band intends to base their activities in Los Angeles.

X Japan had aimed to expand their international presence during the early '90s, but after some setbacks and the death of guitarist hide, the band broke up in 1997. Since their reunion in 2007, they have scheduled multiple overseas concerts, but most had to be postponed for various reasons.

At the end of last month, Yoshiki announced that the band is set to finally make their U.S. debut with a performance at rock festival Lollapalooza, being held in Chicago on August 6-8, 2010. However, at the event in Tokyo, Yoshiki hinted that their first U.S. performance might be sooner than that, saying that they are considering playing at a small live house in Los Angeles in the near future.

Of the band's members, Yoshiki has already been living in Los Angeles for a while. Although he said that the rest of the members plan to move there in order to establish the city as their base, he did not give a specific timeline for the move.

Office of rock group X Japan member Toshi declared bankrupt

TOKYO - The personal office of Toshi, a member of rock group X Japan, has been declared bankrupt as a legal dispute involving the office and a controversial organization has eroded its credit and made its business operations difficult, credit investigator Tokyo Shoko Research said Thursday. The Tokyo District Court has decided to commence the bankruptcy process for Toshi Office and has picked a lawyer to act as bankruptcy administrator.

Toshi, whose full name is Toshimitsu Deyama, is the vocalist of X Japan. He had acted as a de facto public relations officer for the Home of Heart organization, which provides motivational seminars and is headquartered in the town of Nasu, Tochigi Prefecture. The organization has come under fire for allegedly instilling fears in seminar participants and selling them a variety of products for high prices.

13th Memorial for X Japan's Hide

A memorial service was held this week for Hide, the late X Japan guitarist. A 2km line of fans estimated at 35,000 snaked along the Sumida River waiting to pay their respects to the musician who died in 1998 at the age of 33. "hide-The 13th Memorial-Our Pink Spider" was held at the Tsukiji Honganji temple in central Tokyo, the same venue where massive crowds turned out for hide's funeral. That day saw mass hysteria and panic, so this time preparations were more thorough. But as the crowds grew well before the scheduled 12pm start time, organizers decided to start early. Hide's younger brother and business manager, Matsumoto Yuji (42, photo center), spoke at 8:52am, the time his brother was confirmed dead on May 2, 1998.

X Japan leader Yoshiki (top photo right) flew in from Los Angeles for the day, referring to his "friend forever, a band member forever, like a brother in arms." He later flew by helicopter over the Nissan Stadium, where X Japan will play a concert in mid-August, before heading to Narita Airport and back to the U.S. It was also announced this week that "Pink Spider," a musical featuring hide's music, will be staged at the Tokyo Globe Theater next spring.

Hide was born in Yokosuka, Kanagawa Prefecture and while in high school he joined the band Saber Tiger. After that band broke up, he planned to become a hairdresser but was persuaded by Yoshiki to join the band known then simply as X. A decade of huge success came to an end in 1987 and he continued his solo work with the bands hide with Spread Beaver and Zilch.
