Pelajar ditemui selepas hilang 33 jam

2011/02/22

Missing UM candidate found and turns out a winner in elections
By RICHARD LIM
[email protected]

KUALA LUMPUR: The mysterious case of the missing campus election candidate turned out all right for her in the end. Masturah Abu Bakar was found by family members near a mosque in Bangi early yesterday. She cast her vote in the elections – and won.

After being reported missing for about 30 hours from a students’ apartment in Pantai Dalam here, Masturah used a borrowed mobile phone to call her family, who picked her up at about 12.30am. There had been an alleged SMS threat against her.

She later told the police she could not recall how she came to be at Bangi, which is her hometown.

Safe and sound: Masturah making an appearance at the press conference held in Universiti Malaya yesterday.
Masturah, a pro-Mahasiswa (Pro-M) candidate in the Universiti Malaya campus elections, later left for the UM Medical Centre with her family to be examined by a doctor.

She then stopped by at the campus to cast her vote in the campus election, where she was vying for one of the nine general seats.

She was not present when the results were announced – she had won.

(The Pro-M front is said to be anti-establishment while their rivals, the Penggerak Mahasiswa movement is pro-establishment.)

The news of her win was conveyed to her during a press conference that was later called by her family.

She kept mum at the conference but as soon as her close friends showed up, she burst into tears.

Present at the conference were her father, Abu Bakar Din, brother Abdul Muhaimin Abu Bakar and mother, Mariam Abdul Rashid, a Shah Alam city council member.

Masturah was last seen campaigning with a friend at the Pantai Permai Apartments, a students’ lodging facility outside the campus, at about 5pm on Saturday.

She reportedly left her friend, Rohayu Rusli, minutes later to buy a reload card for her mobile phone.

She did not return and Rohayu frantically gathered a search party from among the residents to look for Masturah. After six hours, they lodged a police report.

Mariam declined to comment on Masturah’s ordeal, claiming she (Mariam) lacked the necessary information as her daughter was traumatised.

She added that the family did not receive any ransom demands or threats.

Defending Masturah’s silence at the press conference, Mariam said: “The trauma is still fresh and I think it is quite unfair if we press her for answers.”

“What upsets me the most is that I heard of my daughter’s disappearance from her friends and not the university administration,” she said.

Rohayu said she lodged a police report on Masturah’s disappearance at the Pantai police station at 12.20am on Sunday and another about her (Rohayu) receiving an SMS which was “threatening in nature.”

Rohayu said that the SMS warned her not to go to the police if she wanted to see Masturah again.

“Brickfields OCPD Asst Comm Wan Abdul Bari Wan Abdul Khalid said the police had taken a statement from Masturah.

“We will wait for the doctor’s report before proceeding with our investigations,” he said.

City police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Zulkifli Abdullah advised campus candidates, who may have received similar threatening SMSes, to make immediate police reports.

Meanwhile, UM vice-chancellor Datuk Dr Ghauth Jasmon said four Pro-M candidates had allegedly received SMS threats and were offered alternative accommodation at the university’s International House on Sunday.

However the offer was not taken up, he told a press conference at the university yesterday.

P'raya kampus: Kubu Aspirasi mula bocor

P'raya kampus: Kubu Aspirasi mula bocor

Mereka menang 22 kerusi manakala kem Aspirasi mendapat 15.

Kem pro-A masih selesa dengan 24 kerusi manakala seorang calon bebas menang satu lagi.

Di Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), kem pro-Mahasiswa mengekalkan kedudukan mereka dengaan 11 kerusi, seperti pada tahun sebelumnya.

Mereka dibelasah teruk oleh kumpulan pro-A yang memenangi 31 kerusi.

Sebuah lagi kerusi dimenangi calon bebas.

Sementara itu, di Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), prestasi pro-Mahasiswa bertambah buruk berbanding tahun sebelumnya, mereka hanya mendapat 12 kerusi berbanding 18 sebelumnya.

Kumpulan Aspirasi menang 38 kerusi manakala lima lagi diboloti calon bebas.

==kena hantar rosmah marcos serbu UM laa macam nih...
