Bayern vs Chelsea Player Ratings
Chelsea won the European Cup for the first time on Saturday after beating Bayern Munich on penalties in the Champions League final at the Allianz Arena.
Bayern had looked headed for victory after Thomas Muller had nodded them ahead in the 82nd minute, only for Didier Drogba to draw the Blues level with a powerful header of his own six minutes later.
Arjen Robben then wasted a glorious opportunity to win the game when he saw his penalty saved by Petr Cech in the first half of extra-time, and with neither side able to find the back of the net again, the match went to the dreaded penalty shootout.
Following misses by Juan Mata and Ivica Olic, the score was evenly poised at 3-3 when Bastian Schweinsteiger saw his effort come agonisingly back off the post, setting the stage for Drogba to win the match for Chelsea with a well-struck effort into the bottom corner.
Here, ESPNSTAR.com takes a look at the players on show in Saturday's final at the Allianz Arena.
Chelsea
Petr Cech - 9
While Cech hasn't had the best of seasons this year, he showed why he's still regarded as a world-class keeper by producing the goods on the biggest of stages.
The Czech international came up with a number of excellent stops in the 120 minutes, none better than when he kept out Robben's penalty, a feat he went on to better in the shootout when he got the slightest, but most vital, of touches to push Schweinsteiger's effort onto the post.
Jose Bosingwa - 6
An awful display from Bosingwa, who was exposed time and time again by both Ribery and Contento.
David Luiz - 8
Despite having a huge injury cloud having over him before the game, Luiz slotted seamlessly back into the Chelsea backline and put in a resolute display, twice denying Gomez with a couple of vital interventions.
Gary Cahill - 7.5
Like Luiz, the England international was a real doubt for the game but proved his worth as he defended well all evening long. In a reversal of roles, his Brazilian counterpart provided a real steadying influence against Bayern, whereas Cahill took on the role of playmaker from the back.
Ashley Cole - 9
Drogba may have been announced as the man-of-the-match after the game, but Cole gets our nod after producing a majestic display at left-back.
While he might have been at fault for Bayern's goal, Chelsea would have been three or four goals down by that stage had it not been for his vital blocks and interceptions.
Salomon Kalou (off 84') - 6
An ineffective display from Kalou, who was rightfully brought off for Torres as Chelsea went in search of an equaliser.
John Obi Mikel - 7
Mikel has enjoyed a real resurgence since Roberto Di Matteo took over at the club, and again on Saturday, he provided a steady if unspectacular shield in front of his back four.
Frank Lampard - 6.5
Apart from a well-taken penalty in the shootout, Lampard was virtually unsighted throughout the match as he failed to create anything for his side.
He was however more useful in the defensive third, when he made a couple of clever interceptions to break down the Bayern attack.
Ryan Bertrand (off 74') - 7
While it wasn't the most stunning of performances, Bertrand will go down in the history books for being the first player to make his Champions League debut in the final itself.
The England U-21 star took a while to get settled but once he did, he provided Cole good cover down the left and also looked dangerous in attack.
Juan Mata - 6.5
In a game that Chelsea spent most of their time soaking up the Bayern pressure, Mata, like Lampard, failed to impose himself on the match and barely created anything for Drogba to feed on.
Nonetheless, he did provide a sublime cross for the Ivorian to head home in the 88th minute.
Didier Drogba - 8.5
Drogba was absolute immense on the night as he toiled manfully on his own in attack, and eventually pulled his side level with a powerful header two minutes from time.
And when it mattered most, he showed real composure in the shootout to send Neuer the wrong way and win the European Cup for Chelsea.
Subs
Florent Malouda (on 74') - 6.5
Malouda was brought on to replace Bertrand but struggled to impose himself on the game.
Fernando Torres (on 84') - 7
While Torres didn't have many chances to grab a goal, he worked hard down the right flank after coming on, and showed good pace and penetration on a number of occasions. |
