Sir Alex hails massive effort
Sir Alex Ferguson had mixed feelings at Stamford Bridge after Manchester United's 3-3 thriller with Chelsea.
On the one hand, the manager was rightly delighted with the shift his players put in to salvage a draw from the jaws of defeat - but he believed the Reds should have beaten the Blues after being much the better team.
"I think it’s two dropped points because we played so well," said Sir Alex. "Apart from a period of ten minutes after half-time when we got off to a terrible start and lost two goals, I thought we were the far better team.
"It's not easy coming back from three-nil down and it was a massive effort from our players. It was a great game for the neutral watching. It was fantastic and Chelsea played a great part in it too. Although I thought we were the better team, Chelsea made it an interesting game for anyone watching the match. And I was pleased with my players."
Players who particularly pleased Sir Alex included Wayne Rooney, who despatched two penalties to pull United back into the game. "Wayne has been doing a lot of practice since he missed his last penalty kick (against Bolton) and I think it’s paid off. Our two penalties in the second half were justified and we could have had four penalties awarded in the game."
The boss also heralded the impact made by substitute Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez, who popped up to net United's equaliser from "a great cross by Ryan Giggs."
"To be honest, I maybe should have played Chicharito from the start," admitted Sir Alex. "When hecame on, he just had them on toast really. He really put them under pressure with his movement and positional play. Danny Welbeck has been terrific and he’s going to be a top player. But when Chicharito came on in the second half, it was a different game."
As for the other end of the pitch, when asked about the performance of his goalkeeper David De Gea, the boss responded: "I think the save from the free-kick [taken by Juan Mata in injury time] was unbelievable. It was going right in the top corner. He made two or three other saves, including a good one in the first half.
"Yes, he’s played his part, no question about that. I’m pleased, because we see the talent in the boy. We’re going to trust that talent. Eventually in three or four years’ time, we’re going to see all that.
"At the moment, yes, he’s made one or two mistakes, the introduction to English football has been different for him. It’s not what he’s used to in Spain. But today he’s shown he’s prepared to get in amongst it, he’s got in a couple of punches and he’s done a great job today.” |

Player Ratings: Chelsea 3-3 Manchester United
Sir Alex Ferguson's team come from three goals behind to cap a stunning comeback at Stamford Bridge and keep the pressure on Manchester City.
Manchester United
David de Gea 5.5
Made a nervy start with a weak back-hand punch, which set the tone for an anxious display, particularly when dealing with crosses. The Spaniard made a few athletic saves, particularly in added time, but he looks an accident waiting to happen.
Patrice Evra Flop of the Match 5.0
Loose display from the United skipper. Looked vulnerable to Sturridge's directness and it was no coincidence that Chelsea's three goals all came down the left flank. Won United's first penalty.
Rio Ferdinand 5.5
A miserable afternoon for the United veteran. Pathetically booed and baited throughout by Chelsea fans and his own goal after failing to properly mark Luiz at a free-kick looked to have ended United's hopes.
Jonny Evans 6.5
Commanding in the air and adept on the deck, he looked the most composed of United's defenders and did more than anyone else to hold the back five together.
Rafael Da Silva 6.5
Feisty in defence and always a willing accomplice to the United attacks. Blameless in terms of the goals but he was sacrificed for the last half hour as the visitors went all-out attack.
Ryan Giggs 7.5
Provided eye-of-the-needle distribution from central midfield, and then from the left flank for the last half hour. His class remains undimmed.
Michael Carrick 6.0
Looked overwhelmed at times but kept his head above water to ensure United dominated second-half possession.
Ashley Young 5.0
Began brightly in his comeback match but quickly faded and was sacrificed when United went 3-0 down.
Antonio Valencia 7.0
Delivered a stream of potent crosses from the right flank and it was to his credit that he remained one of United's most potent attackers even when he filled in at right-back for the last half hour.
Wayne Rooney Top of the Match 8.0
Emphatically banged in United's first penalty to give his team a lifeline and then smartly sidefooted the second spot-kick. In open play he was less pinpoint but he was heavily involved in United's comeback and was back to his best in the last 20 minutes.
Danny Welbeck 7.0
His pace and movement caused Cahill problems, but he did not get the rub of the green. Moved out to the left flank after United went 3-0 down and won the second penalty somewhat fortuitously.
• Substitutions
Ji-Sung Park 6.5
Industrious in the midfield following his late introduction, but didn't really have time to significantly affect proceedings.
Paul Scholes 6.5
His crisp passing was crucial to United's comeback, although there was the rare sight of him giving the ball away once in a dangerous area.
Chicharito 7.5
His brilliant movement lost Luiz for the equaliser, which he finished with a typically emphatic header. |
