Alex loves spot of controversy
STEVEN HOWARD - Chief sports writer
Published: 05 Feb 2012
IN a season where you wouldn't bet against anything, this was the game that had everything.
United penalties given, United penalties not given, a Jonny Evans own goal and another that went in off Rio Ferdinand's shoulder.
And a strike from Juan Mata of such velocity that, had the goal not been anchored in place, would have carried it through the back of the Matthew Harding Stand and down towards the Hammersmith flyover.
Chelsea fans were scarcely able to believe what they were watching.
After successive draws against Norwich and Swansea, a team minus John Terry, Frank Lampard, Ashley Cole and Didier Drogba were 3-0 up against the champions.
At this point, you were even contemplating writing adjective-strewn essays in appreciation of the new Chelsea and how the young Adonis Andre Villas-Boas was showing there WAS life without the old guard.
But, seeing it was also a match involving Alex Ferguson and Chelsea, there was another discourse on the appalling limitations of match officials and how generally cruel life can be.
Last year, Ferguson got the hump with referee Martin Atkinson for failing to send off David Luiz and then awarding Chelsea a late penalty that gave the home side all three points.
It also earned him a five-game ban.
In the long-honoured tradition of controversy stalking the United manager every time he sets foot inside Stamford Bridge, it was only natural that he should leave West London with smoke coming out of his ears again.
This time it was assistant referee Darren Cann for failing to award either of the two penalties United thought they should have had in the first half for fouls on Ashley Young and Danny Welbeck.
Ferguson had a point. Both could well have been given.
At this point, he was patrolling the touchline with the sort of expression on his face that has reduced strong men to tears and nuclear reactors to so much twisted steel and ash.
He spent so much time in the ear of fourth official Phil Dowd, he practically became physically attached.
Not that Dowd — or referee Howard Webb — was responsible for the misfortune that saw Chelsea take the lead when the ball went from Daniel Sturridge's foot via David de Gea's boot to Evans' chest and into the net.
In the end, though, all was well that ended well.
After the break, United finally got their two penalties — both a little luckily, it has to be admitted — and, courtesy of a header from substitute Javier Hernandez six minutes from time, completed a remarkable recovery from three goals down.
Had United been awarded the earlier penalties that would have made it four in all.
Maybe then Ferguson might have been happy and believed, if only for a minute, that the world wasn't perpetually against him |

Cleverley back to face Liverpool
Tom Cleverley is set to return to action for the first time since October in Saturday’s crunch Barclays Premier League clash with Liverpool.
The midfielder has been sidelined with an ankle injury since the 1-0 win at Everton on 29 October but is ready to make his comeback against Kenny Dalglish’s side.
Cleverley was due to play in the Reserves’ postponed clash with Chelsea at the start of the week and he was not selected for Thursday’s Manchester Senior Cup defeat to Man City, leading to speculation he would be involved in the first team this weekend.
Sir Alex said at his Friday press conference: "Tom's training well. We were disappointed the Chelsea Reserves game was called off on Monday. The plan was for him to stay over with us [after last Sunday's first-team game at Stamford Bridge] and play in the game on the Monday. That was called off. But he's trained very well and he'll be involved tomorrow."
#FINALLY HE BACK!! |
