Tennis: Double joy for Malaysia
By : Ajitpal Singh
IT was a great day for Malaysian tennis yesterday when men's doubles Si Yew Meng and Adam Jaya defeated the top seeds in the Thailand Futures One while Jawairiah Noordin nailed the Grade Three Bangladesh International Junior Championships.
Wildcards Yew Meng-Adam stunned top seeds David Brewer-Ian Flanagan of Britain, the World No 390, 1-6, 6-4, 10-7 to qualify for the quarter-finals in Bangkok.
The win is exceptional as this is the first time Yew Meng-Adam have beaten a World ranked pair.
They will play either Thailand抯 Siributwang brothers, Kirati and Reerakit or Indonesia抯 Elbert Sie and Nathan Thompson of the United States for a spot in the semi-finals.
Meanwhile, Jawairiah picked up her first international title this year and her first ever Grade Three title when she defeated Britain抯 Lisa Whybourn 6-0, 6-1 in Dhaka. |

Federer favourite for Laureus World Sports Award
ST PETERSBURG: Roger Federer is favourite to carry off the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year award for an unprecedented fourth straight year here today.
The Swiss star took the honour in 2005, 2006 and 2007 and in the last 12 months he has added three more Grand Slam titles to his name at Wimbledon and in the Australian and US Opens.
That leaves him just two short of the all-time Grand Slam titles record of 14 currently held by Pete Sampras.
His five-set win over Rafael Nadal in the Wimbledon final emulated Bjorn Borg's five titles in a row almost 30 years ago, whilst his fourth straight US Open title is the longest winning stretch since Bill Tilden won six in a row from 1920 to 1925.
It was also the third straight year that he won three out of four Grand Slam titles with only the French Open crown missing from his repertoire.
Short-listed to oppose Federer for the Laureus award is two-time former winner (2000, 2001) Tiger Woods.
Golf's world No.1 won only one Major championship in 2007 at the US PGA, but he tied for second at the Masters and US Open and won seven times on the US Tour including the season-ending Tour Championship event.
The others short-listed are US world championship sprinter Tyson Gay, Brazil's World Footballer of the Year Kaka, outstanding US swimmer Michael Phelps, and Formula One world champion Kimi Raikkonen of Finland.
There could be a repeat winner in the women's section also with Russian pole-vaulter Yelena Isinbayeva once again short-listed.
The Russian will have strong competition, however, from the world No.1 tennis player Justine Henin.
Other contestants for the award are Swedish heptathlete Carolina Kluft, Australian swimmer Libby Lenton, Brazilian footballer Marta and Mexican golfer Lorena Ochoa. |

It was also the fourth straight year he has taken the Laureus world award, the first man to do so.
"I am just happy that the jury didn't think that three is enough," said Federer.
"Weget a lot of awards during the year. It might be national, it might beregional, but the Laureus is the one that goes worldwide.
Referringto his loss to Novak Djokovic in the semi-final of the Australian Openlast month, Federer said: "There are many up-and-coming youngsters inthe game and it was about time they won something.
"They provedit at the Australian Open with two very young players in the final(Djokovic and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga), but I hope I can keep my ground forsome time to come."
"Three to go (Grand Slams) and to win the French Open which is next would be great."
